There has been plenty of discussion about competitive play in Brawl having all items off except the smash ball. Gimpyfish said that in their tournament, they had all items off just to get the feel of each character, but what about everyone else? All the 1v1 matches I've seen have been with all items off. I hate items as much as the next guy but I'd really like to see the Smash ball becoming a regular thing in competitive play.

Why has no one been making videos with it on?!

I vote for no items at all, including smashballs. To me that just takes the fun out of a game if you can just use a ridiculous FS to get an easy stock, instead of fighting to get it

Items are fun. But in competitive play, everying's random. If someone get's a Smash Ball, everything changes for the other player: in a bad way. It also creates a new tier list (not that there is one now, but there will be) because some characters have better Final Smashes then others.

why would we allow something even more broken then a normal item >_<

nah but seriusly, they are a not that great, you get some "cool"(meh >_>) animations and all but they are to strong. now it they were not random and did alot less damage you would most likely see them at tourneys.

There are some, you just have to look for it. SB won't be in competitive play. Too random and too overpowered.

and what's wrong with a new tier list?

The main thing you said is IF someone gets a smash ball. Your skill and strategy to acquire a smash ball or avoid a final smash makes it all the more interesting. The only thing left to factor is, is there any way a random SB spawn can blow up someone charging a smash attack. If not, there sould be no problem

Unless you play in tournaments, this issue shouldn't matter at all to you. Now does it?

Just play a few games with the smash ball on against someone who mains sonic.
If hes any good he'll get it 2/3rds of the time and the game will continue as follows:

Smasball sonic
Everyone jumping and hiding
Everyone dying
next 30 seconds are spent waiting on the invinciblity platform until the smash wears off....
gets REALLy annoying and cheap after a few games.

EDIT: I forgot to add that casual play with your buddies SHOULD have them on. Its so much fun trying to get that ball. Like trying to catch butterflies while waist deep in honey.:chuckle:

because Final Smashes add a level of randomness that changes everything
It's not that random. You don't just pick it up and use it, you actually have to work to break it and/or keep your opponent from doing so. Like I said, If they're officially banned when our MLG rules come out, I won't have a problem with that. What I have a problem with is people not using them now, before we have out tournament rules

Unless you play in tournaments, this issue shouldn't matter at all to you. Now does it?
and to you, I've played in a couple small Melee tournaments, and I intend to participate in one large one on the 8th or March, and I've even hosted a Melee tournament and got compliments on my organization and running of it by veteran tournament goers. I also intend to be heavily attending tournaments for Brawl so this matters very much to me thank you

Because these people are going to use the tournament rules that they expect so they can get some practice in before everyone else.

That's exactly what I"m trying to say!! I understand what many of you are saying about them changing the flow of battle too greatly, but Like i said in the first post, WE DON'T KNOW THAT FOR SURE OR NOT BECAUSE NO1'S BEEN USING THEM CONSISTENTLY ENOUGH TO LOGICALLY AGREE AND DECIDE.
As far as you can see from videos.

First, nothing's wrong with a new tier list. I never said making one was bad.

Second, I agree it takes skill to accomplish that, but it takes more skill to whip someone without additional "help."

i'll just jump in to the fray here and say somthing. then something else. and maybe one more thing. i think they should be on for 3 reasons. 1st is you have to work for it and it is not just a gimme ko. 2nd is most of them are not one hit kills and are avoidable. 3rd is they are not like items. items are set do do a specific thing. smash balls are personalized and different. there kind if like b moves of death. ok, thats all, just thought i'd contribute.

Well, although i agree with you 100%, I still don't know why we aren't seeing videos of people (good people) trying them out like they said they would before release

Peoples FSes being better than others is irrelevant. The reason I don't see FSes working is because it screws up the pacing of an otherwise itemless game. You're in the middle of an epic fight and them BAM, Smashball's out and you scramble to get it, interrupting what could've gone on, or campers stalling until they get a good final smash.

Like playing with them if other items are on. Smashballs alone = ick.

Not to be mean or anything, but is this post coming from you watching videos of others play...or you yourself playing the game? From playing the game I can tell you your #1 and 2 are both incomplete. 1st off, why you might have to work for them some times, what about all the situations were they pop up in your area after you've just killed your opponent? Your opponent come back against you have a final smash?... not cool. 2nd, Say Wha!? Name 4 that wouldn't be a one hit kill in a 1 vs. 1 match (cause everyone[of the 4] you name only wouldn't kill at 0%...and who ever has 0% in this game?)... not to mention you said most... I think not. Not to mention avoidable... Ill give you the benefit of the doubt and say mabey with some skill you could dodge one or two from a character like Link, Toon, Marth, Ike, Ganon, CF, Metaknight, Sheik or Zelda... thats only 9 characters... what about everyone else?...

taking the fun out of the game? are you crazy? having the smashballs on can really pump players up. its really unexpected and random. and remember that not all FS are good. just wathcing people fight to knock out a stock gets really boring. a smashball can really bring the excitement out of a match. they should be allow in tournament play.:p

for # 1 who says you have to go after it and change the flow. as for the 1 hit kill that was extremly assumption. i have seen lots of fs's avoided though, i think. well, i don't want to be starting somthing and i don't have the game so i'll sit tight and shut up, lol. oh and it is only from vids and general knowlage i based that on. ok now to work on my grammar and spelling.:chuckle:

Just because they look cool, doesn't mean that they should be treated differently. An item's an item's an item no matter what way you look at it. Sorry.

it's just that MOST other items don't move, MOST. and i don't think there are others u have to break open, excluding barrels and crates of corse. also, idk, they just seem like moves and not items. btw, do you know of a good happy place? i can't seem to find mine. :(

I have played brawl, but before I did I agreed with the notion that smash balls should be left in in tournament play.
Then I played for a few hours and noticed how 90% of the time the person that got the smash ball was the winner.
theyre fun, but they tip the scales a little too much sometimes...

its still too early to tell, but a camper strategy could come out of this. How cheap would that be?

I am torn. On one hand, I really like the implementation of the Smash Ball, because it is not just a simple item and seems to add more strategy. On the other hand, the animations get boring quickly and some are over-powered. On the whole I see all items, including smash balls turned off for tournaments; however, this will not stop me and my friends from playing with them on at times if only to refresh the game for us.

Quoted for the Truth, one of few in this thread.

It's not that big of a deal. Smash Balls being used by tournament organizers and such are matters of opinion, whether you think it's tourney-viable or not. Some will use it (Few, when Brawl actually comes out and people realize the consequences of having Smash Balls), some will not.

You can't and will not force people to use it. Your not Smash King. However, your perfectly viable to use it however you wish, whether you allow them in your tourneys or whatnot.
