Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

Changing the poll based on one of today's releases!

Here is the ARMS poll, that I didnt post because I was a few days late. Pretty mixed results, which makes sense based on the timing.
http://i.imgur.com/ARLIcez.png
After that is Splatoon, which is much more positive
http://i.imgur.com/RRGRHGo.png?1

I was originally going to do just Sonic, but I realized that this is probably the best chance I'll get for SEGA for a long long time, so i'll be more broad here.

EDIT and images are broken again. ha.

Today was the Sonic Mania's release.
Anyone want a battlefield based on Sonic Mania?
Tails? Knuckles for Smash Bros?

What do you think about the Sonic Mania?

A Distant Demon A Distant Demon , I really think you should specify newcomer or veteran. I answered the poll with Sonic being counted as a "Sega character" and it only now occurred to me you may have meant newcomers. :p

I'd say it's too hard to say.

The only SEGA character I think could've performed well enough on the Ballot outside of secondary Sonic characters would be Arle from Puyo Puyo. Every SEGA IP other than Sonic is niche and therefore would need a strong Ballot rank in order to be considered I feel, and Puyo Puyo being a big deal over in Japan coupled with Arle being present on a lot of Japanese Popularity Polls does suggest there is strong demand for her over there. Who knows though, for all we know AiAi might have had a silent but massive support base this whole time we were all unaware of.

In terms of other Sonic characters I think Tails or Knuckles will be who end up getting added in the event they begin including more Sonic characters. I would love to see Dr. Eggman though, on a personal note.

I would love a Casino stage for Sonic.

Green Hill is iconic for sure, but much overused, and next Smash's stage roster need more variety in comparison to Wii U's.

EDIT: Friendly reminder we have already 2 SEGA characters in the person of :4sonic: and :4bayonetta:.

If Metal Sonic is included in the Smash Roster, make sure to include the Stardust Speedway battlefield.

Honestly, the only additional Sega character at this point that makes any sense is another Sonic character, be it Tails, Knuckles, Dr. Eggman, or Shadow.

I suppose for non-Sonic characters there's also this guy since he was brought up in an interview with Sakurai....

.....but Sakurai seems to see him as another "impossible/absurd" request in the same vein as Goku and SpongeBob....

Honestly if for whatever reason Segata Sanshiro got in, I'd just be hyped for his theme music.

We already have Ryu from Street Fighter.
We don't need another karate character like Segata.
Segata being unlikely for other reasons and Opo just talking about how he wants his theme if he does somehow make the cut aside, Ryu and Segata are nothing alike as they have completely different fighting styles.
And by the way, the term you're looking for is "martial arts", not "karate". "Karate" is just one form of martial arts, and generalizing all martial arts as "karate" can be considered offensive to those who practice.

"Too many swordsmen" has evolved I see
Also he's a parody of a judo fighter from Akira Kurosawa's (Ikiru, Seven Samurai, Yojimbo) directorial debut, Sanshiro Sugata.

I think a different 3rd party company should be represented. Rayman could always get promoted after making a trophy cameo in Smash Wii U.

Seeing as we already have two Sega characters with Sonic and Bayonetta, I'm not sure how likely a third is.

Maybe a second Sonic character (of the third party franchises already in Smash, Sonic and Final Fantasy seem best suited to a second character), but I'm struggling to think of a character from a new series who would stand out. (Maybe Ecco the Dolphin or Hornet from Fighters Megamix, but that would be more due to how unusual they are rather than people being excited for them)

I'd say Arle needs a bit more notability in the West before she's an inclusion.

Took a while for a lot of Yo-Kai Watch stuff to get here to help Jibanyan's popularity.

Sure, the possibility they cancel Smash in respect for Sakurai is there, but even if they do, I'd say at least a port is guaranteed. Though I think they plan a complete new entry to promote the Switch sales. Seems obvious to me after all the franchises that have already been confirmed to get to the Switch (XB, Kirby, Yoshi, Pokemon, FE etc).
No, I can't see a brand new entry if Sakurai is not there. That sounds like a stretch to make another engine without the guy that practically made all the engines himself. I just feel that removing someone so significant is bound to impact the game. When I said what I said about HAL Laboratory earlier, I meant it. Without them, Nintendo will need to take their time with the fifth entry and I don't mind at all since they will obviously push the Switch for a while. I don't need a brand new Smash right now anyway. I'm fine with Melee online through Virtual Console and a Sm4sh Deluxe with Ice Climbers and Smash Run. The sooner the better.

This is just coming from someone that has experienced a game's downfall when one of the key people leaves, with only a small amount of them actually being cancelled altogether because of it. None of them being Nintendo games, of course, but still. I still stand by what I say that Nintendo will definitely hire HAL Laboratory if a new entry is planned or simply port existing assets for quick sales, which is not a bad thing since everyone still praises Melee anyway and I imagine they wouldn't care if it's the same game untouched with online play. And trust me, they wouldn't modify the game's balance unless it's a remake or something, which it's not since it will most likely be Virtual Console. Only time will tell right now.

Sakurai left Hal over a decade ago so i am not sure how much involvement they have had since melee. I guess they do have the experience but alot has probably changed and idk if they would be up to take over smash if sakurai & his sora team are done. Just a thought.

I think if anything segas next rep will come from atlus probably from persona/smt although i would perfer a tms rep. Maybe ryo from shenmue could get in on popularity like cloud (not sure if he has ever been on a nintendo platform or how involved sega is with the franchise lately).

Ryo himself has been on a Nintendo system via crossovers (SEGA All-stars and the PXZ games) but that's it.

He's in a similar boat to the likes of Morrigan and Dante and (for the sake of a SEGA character) Selvaria Bles.

When the topic is Sega newcomers and there's barely any mention of AiAi. ;_;

I don't think he has a chance, but I just want Sega to give Super Monkey Ball more love at this point. Anything.

As the owner of the Akira Yuki (from Sega's Virtua Fighter series) support thread, I never thought he had much of a chance. The Mii costumes of him and Jacky Bryant were a pleasant surprise, though.

For SEGA, my hopes lie in Tails, Knuckles, or Eggman. The way I see it, Tails is the next logical step, Knuckles is just a cool character with great abilities, and Eggman has so many potential moves / weapons to bring to the fight.

As for stages, I personally think that there'd need to be a classic stage (something like Chemical Plant, Mushroom Hill, Flying Battery, Stardust Speedway, Casino Night, Studiopolis...) and a modern stage (City Escape is my choice, but Station Square / Park Avenue / Planet Wisp work too). At least, have one more typical nature stage and a more mechanical / urban stage to represent both sides of the coin.

I wouldn't object to having Puyo Puyo in Smash, but I think that I'd prefer to see Panel de Pon / Lip be more prominent first.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I don't think either of those have appeared on a Nintendo console, and as Sakurai did say he would've been uncomfortable with making Cloud Strife a playable character had he flat-out no non-Nintendo appearances he'd probably feel the same about those two.

That said, a Shin Megami Tensei representative isn't entirely out of the question I'd say, it's a long-shot, sure, but I'd say there's a chance of it.

Apparently there's gonna be Super Monkey Ball themed DLC for the OC in Sonic Forces, so there's that.

I honestly feel we'd get one of Tekken's main trio before we got a Virtua Fighter character, personally. Hard to say how likely either of those are, anyway. We do know Heihachi was one of the other Namco characters up for consideration, though, so that's something. (Heihachi was rejected in the end due to the difficulty of translating a Tekken character over into Smash Bros.)

Yu is in Persona Q which is on the 3ds and Joker will be in Persona Q2 which will also be on 3ds.

I think Joker, at least, has the upcoming Persona Q sequel. I've never played Persona though so I have no idea if that's accurate.

When it comes to future companies, I think the return of Konami, Ubisoft, Level-5, Activision, Tecmo, Microsoft and the Indies all have somewhat of a shot of happening. Any you guys think I have missed?

Yu is in Persona Q which is on the 3ds and Joker will be in Persona Q2 which will also be on 3ds.

Ahh okay. Thanks for the correction! Not the biggest JRPG guy, on a personal note. Would like to get more into the genre in future though!

I guess the difficulty comes from thinking of another Sega franchise that stands out.

I think Somic is the only one anymore. The rest, even if successful just don't have quite an impact as some others.

Only ones I think come close are Super Monkey Ball and Persona.

Comparatively, I can think several large series that stand out for Capcom, Namco and Square. Resident Evil, Tekken, Tomb Raider, Dragon Quest, Tales of, and Devil May Cry and many more.

For the record, Sonic newcomers would still be SEGA newcomers. Hence why i did it for Mania's release.

Just for the sake of transparency.

Personally, dont think any stand out enough. Any new IP is either mostly dormant or not very popular. A second sonic character would ve cool, but i dont think any individual one stands out enough to really do it

Personally would be cool with Tails, knuckles, or Eggman. all at once would be even better

For even more clarity, does the poll include veterans? Because if not I should change my vote. :p

Edit: Whoops! Title changed without me noticing lol.

For the record, Sakurai didn't say "he'd have felt uncomfortable with Cloud Strike if he had no Nintendo appearances", he said he "might have had qualms about it". That's actually a very big difference in wording, showing it simply means he'd have not been nearly as sure of the choice. Frankly, it still implies Cloud would've very likely gotten in regardless due to his status as an iconic character.

Of course, we may never get anyone who hasn't had a Nintendo appearance, but that's not a hard set rule in reality. I'm aware for the purpose of this forum's support rules, it's a rule for the thread choices, but it's not a hard rule he ever actually made at any point in time. He even acknowledged that old(and originally mistranslated) rule when talking about Cloud, noting right there that it wasn't a rule but more something he took into consideration.

Aside of his appearances in the Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing games, Ryo hasn't made a significant impact on Nintendo systems.

...And Cloud ever had before appearing? It's really more having an impact on gaming that matters in general, not Nintendo. Ryo has issues not being nearly all that iconic, but that's about it.

At least Cloud's home series debuted on Nintendo platforms and still get several releases on them to this day, which is not the case for Shenmue.

Which has absolutely zero relevance to why Cloud was chosen anyway. If FF didn't start outside of the Playstation first, all that would matter would be FF's own gaming impact(which is still huge). Cloud still has absolutely no major Nintendo appearances whatsoever regardless of whether FF has tons of major games also on Nintendo.

Don't make up criteria for characters getting chosen. Having a Nintendo appearance at all makes them easier for being considered by Sakurai. That's literally the criteria he created(worded in a pretty clear manner for what he meant). Having a gaming impact is far more important than how big their Nintendo appearance is(which besides not being an actual outright requirement, doesn't have to be big at all).

What do you think about the Sonic Mania?
For starters, I think the Final Boss theme, "Ruby Illusions", is custom made for Smash music.

Although, with Sega, a Forces stage seems more likely.

How likely would a 3rd party series be able to double dip with characters?
I wouldn't put my hopes up beyond Sonic or FF though. He's never spoken of a second rep whatsoever, or his ideals behind it. He has spoken about the guests being "special characters" at times, but that's about it. While it's true he cares about series balance and all, we also don't know if he'd make special rules or exceptions based upon how a series work. FF has few connected games due to a lack of continuity, despite sharing some NPC names and Monsters, it's basically a ton of different universes. Sonic is the opposite, with most of it being connected, bar the Boom games, a sub-series.

That said, I'd like to think he wouldn't really be bothered by silly specific stuff like that and add a character if he feels they could be fun as is(I.E. Tails). But we really don't know what he'd do.

I'd say it's unlikely, but that's my interpretation of his overall statements. And we also know he changes his mind too(hence Villager getting in 4 compared to Brawl).
