Besides I'm sure even PolarPanda had "signs" or rather crumbles that it wouldn't be Smash either on his side and told the Geno thread to not expect Smash before the VGA.


When I mean EVERYONE was blindsided. I really mean it.

My NoA contact saw things implying Metroid would be at the VGAs. He was never told directly, however. Because of this, I assumed we'd get Metroid and (probably) no Smash. I was incredibly taken aback when it was the opposite. Thankfully, I never said Metroid and I never said I knew for sure, because I really didn't.

Yet K. Rool is a DK character not entirely created by them, yes? He was created by Rare, a Western studio, who is now owned by one of their direct competitors...but he's here, yeah?
I don't think "NoJ's pride" is something that would stop Geno being in.

K. Rool was created by Rare, but owned by Nintendo since the bought out of Rare from Microsoft. When Rare left Nintendo, they made a deal in which Nintendo would completely own all the DKC content, characters, music, ect and that includes the Kremlings and K. Rool, not just the Kongs.

I seriously doubt that. There's no denying that Geno is fairly popular and is liked by Sakurai himself, but he isn't anywhere near their level.

Geno was third on that one offical Japanese vote that happened in the Brawl days, only behind Sonic and Mega Man. And Sakurai himself has stated that Geno has gotten a lot of votes, which I think is notable.

Yeah, maybe with Snake and Ice Climbers. But people weren't clambering for Pichu and Young Link.

That thing was not a poll. It was just Sakurai publishing Japanese requests that he personally found interesting, and people recorded the number of times certain names came up for each written fan request.

I always saw that less as a "people were demanding pichu and young link" thing and more a "did it cause we can" thing. Most people are here doesn't have the same ring to it. I doubt more people voted young link over Geno

Mewtwo and Roy were in a league their own during the pre-Smash 4 days for Japanese requests. Even outside Japan, Mewtwo was in the Top 3 and Roy was in the Top 10.

It is very likely Ice Climbers, Wolf, and Snake were all in the Top 10 for the ballot, and I would not doubt if Pokemon Trainer, Squirtle, Pichu, and Ivysaur were all in the Top 25. I think even Young Link probably did surprisingly well due to Majora's Mask 3D launching at around the same time the ballot happened.

Sakurai made a cryptic hint that everyone coming back is what he believed the fans wanted (due to the fact that cut veterans likely dominated the ballot).

On an individual basis, yes. But the developers and Sakurai himself likely were viewing things from general perspective when it came to veterans.

If Geno was treated by trash by the community he wouldn't have gotten a Mii costume due to the love he gets.
Geno is an underdog. Who has been pretty highly regarded by Smash fans for over a decade now.

Square doesn't use him much, sure, but everyone else...that's a big leap.

Dude, I think he is treated very reasonably here. He is at the top of the most likely poll up top for a reason, and several people, though they question his chances, see him as one of the more likely choices as well.

Geno is not treated like trash. If you want an example of a character being treated like trash in Smash Bros. look at how Chrom was handled in Smash 4 (got Falcon Punched out of the roster and had Palutena and Viridi dump all over him with the Palutena's gudiance for Robin).

They had to be involved with the Mii costume, Spirit, icon. I think they certainly know he has his fans.

I feel like they would know, as Sakurai likely needed some reason to give Square to justify the Mii costume in the first place. The main question is whether or not they care to the point of letting him be a full blown rep.

Doesn't Geno score high on community polls, and has been scoring high since the Brawl days? Haven't a ****-ton of people in this thread made cases for why Geno is likely to be DLC?

I meant Square-Enix as a whole. I am sure those who worked with Sakurai know Super Mario RPG is a cult classic, which is why Geno and Mallow are the only other Square content in Ultimate aside from Cloud and Midgar.

Because he is such a big player in this that determining this sort of stuff is super important. I think it's fair to say that many people here have made peace with the fact that certain characters are not likely, but Geno is a major wild card in all this. So it is natural that a lot of discussion would go to him.
