This guy is anything but Optimistic even when it comes to Geno, it doesn't help that he bashes and singles out DQ because of a SINGLE COMPOSER, and it's honestly not fair. His thoughts are just too clouded. Look, if you're going to come in here look at both pros and cons for Geno and not just the positives! Yes, he is likely as a canididate; but don't bash other Square who have just as much of a right to be in Smash just as much as Geno does. They are all popular choices, all of them have great reasons to be in Smash, but they also have their problems.

Dragon Quest-I know that DQ is a lincensing hell with the music just like Final Fantasy, but he keeps bringing up a single composer to bash the franchise in general. It has a whole country behind it, and it's one of Square's biggest franchises, it would make sense to put someone from there, but it lacks popularity with any other region. Not only that but DQ also has the problem of who do you go to for it. Slime, Erdrick, or do you go to the most recent hero that most people probably won't know. I think that's another thing for Dragon Quest.

Kingdom Hearts-With Sora, he's probably their next big character after Cloud and Sephiroth that's even on the list. Kingdom Hearts is one of Square bigger franchises out there next to Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest. People write him off because, of "muh Disney" I and some other people have already stated Sora's case, and why it wouldn't be that difficult as many would think. I don't think Disney would really care that much, just as long as it benefits them somehow.

Chrono Trigger-Chrono is in a similar situation as Geno, but not by much; I don't even think there's many legalties with Chrono (then again I just learned about the DQ thing, with the music, so Chrono could also have some trouble that I don't know about, but he would appeal to the old school crowd and would put the "hey, Goku is in Smash kinda" motif.

Sephiroth is another character that don't need much of an introduction. If he were to get in he would be our first third party who's a villain (and honestly, Smash is still kinda lacking with them) Sephiroth is one of the most iconic video game villains out there, (along with Bowser, Ganondorf, Eggman) but the problem with Seph probably is FFVII in particular is already represented in the game by it's most popular and known character (Cloud represents not only FFVII, but just Final Fantasy in general). Sephiroth is practically not needed, and then you have the whole sword issue with Sephiroth, that could potentially hinder his moveset potential.

This is how you debate, not just put positives only and BUT also the negatives. If you just look at the positives only, people will think your just propping characters. You have to look at their whole situation, not just the positives. Again, this thread was to discuss all characters from the list and see who's likely, not to tear any character down. We all have our favorites, and we all wish they could get in, but we also know that some characters just seem more likely than others, and we have to look at all of it and see what these guys could bring to the table.

Chrono probably wouldn't be that hard to get the composers Yasunori Mitsuda composed some stuff for xenoblade 2 so if chrono trigger got in I don't think there would be any problems music that is although Nobuo Uematsu composed some tracks too so who knows but I think chrono won't have that hard of a time only thing I can see holding him back is relevance but barely

Didn't Nobuo only do, like, 2 tracks for Chrono Trigger or something? They could always use the tracks he didn't do. Chrono Trigger has an amazing OST so I'm sure it'd still work out nicely.

Well my point was I think the Square being stingy thing all depends on the composers the only two composers Is being stingy are Koichi Sugiyama (DQ) and Nobuo everyone else I believe Is cool I know the composer of kingdom hearts games also composes the Mario and Luigi rpg series so out of the 7 potential reps we only got two stingy composers

I have not been on here since Ultimate hit last week. Been having an awesome time! Hope everyone is enjoying the game as much as I have been.

I do not intend to stop speculating, but may not be as present as I was in the past.

That being said, I'd imagine not a whole lot has been going on? Wouldn't surprise me.

Side note: A.G.L. A.G.L. I miss ya already buddy!!!

Yet K. Rool is a DK character not entirely created by them, yes? He was created by Rare, a Western studio, who is now owned by one of their direct competitors...but he's here, yeah?
I don't think "NoJ's pride" is something that would stop Geno being in.
Bare in mind, "not entirely created by them" doesn't negate the fact that he's still owned solely by them, unlike Geno.

Besides, you're forgetting that he still showed up actively in other games even after Rare's departure, so the idea of pride being against him doesn't really stand on that footing.

He could've likely had more support from people inside and outside the Smash fanbase unlike Geno, what with Nintendo fans wanting the Kremlings back as the main DK villains.

With K. Rool, it's more so a case of ignorance on NoJ's part than pride. And let's be honest, presently K. Rool is objectively easier for Nintendo to get back into the game compared to Geno, all things and stingy Square considered.

Hey guys...

>Geno Mii Costume could return

OH NO NO NO NO NO
Couldn’t this just be for releasing Rex’s Costume as a standalone?

Is it acting when it's just simply a fact though? Geno IS treated like literal trash, by Square, by the community, by everyone. This is what makes his story so compelling.
I think everyone, both Geno fans and the General Smash community, is aware of the fact that Geno is and has always been an underdog, so acting like the underdog is suddenly likely comes off as naive, I guess.

When's Pac Man getting the little hat he had in Pac Land? That's the real question.
The realest question.

If I shut up today; will you stick up for Geno for me?
I will stick up for Geno, but I don't see anything said that is disrespecting the character. Doubting a characters chances is different from saying 'This character doesn't belong'

Geno is the only character I am religiously devoted to and normally I am the one whining about disrespect, but it has been pretty tame here.

In regards to the Reggie quote, I am actually a little more confident in Geno. There has never been a scenario where Square Enix turned down Geno and they gladly gave Sakurai his likeness twice. So I actually am feeling pretty good that Square wouldn't say 'no' if Sakurai asked for him as DLC.

For the time being, he might be my top pick for DLC. The spirits appearance kind of makes me feel suspicious about him. I can see the outcome being something like Sora/Chrono/Slime/etc as the character and Geno comes back as a mii costume.

Despite my 2B post I'd be 100% down for any of these 7 characters as well. Geno is from an old favorite, Sephiroth is one of the biggest video game villains ever, Crono is from a game widely considered to be one of the best RPGs ever created, Sora would make people who aren't me happy, and Slime, Luminary, and Erdrick are all from my favorite RPG series, Dragon Quest.

Still, given Joker is from a surprisingly recent game, I have reason to believe that 2B has a decent chance now so if she ends up being the new Square Enix newcomer then I'll be content.

Ooooo speculation! This could be fun.

Geno - I'm gonna be real, I'm not too sure about his chances. Ignoring how requested he is in most internet circles, I don't think Nintendo is going to go through the trouble of negotiating with Square just to get a one-off side character that hasn't been relevant in over 20 years. If they're really trying to barter with Square, I'd imagine they'd try to get someone bigger that would get more casual fans excited, which is what Nintendo seems to be going for based on the Joker reveal. While I'm sure a lot of people would be really excited to have Geno, I can't see him getting much of a reaction outside that niche. I feel like if they wanted to include Geno, he would've been in the base game alongside Ridley and K. Rool, but for whatever reason he's not and I doubt they'll pick him for DLC when Square has so many more relevant characters to pick from. And while it's too early to say if Spirits deconfirm characters, I don't think they would've made him a Spirit if they had bigger plans for the character, but that's just me.

Sora - Probably the most likely candidate on this list. Kingdom Hearts is one of Square's biggest franchises alongside Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest, and if they really are going for big-hitters, now would be the perfect time to get Sora. Kingdom Hearts 3 is one of the most anticipated titles of 2019 and I wouldn't be surprised if they decided to port the rest of the series to Switch and Xbox soon, so its at peak relevancy right now. The only issue I could possibly see is how the character is heavily tied to Disney. Disney themselves would probably be happy to have Sora in Smash, but the character being so strongly associated with non-video game properties puts him at a bit of a weird spot. They could easily leave out any references to other Disney properties, but since the Disney stuff is such a huge part of Kingdom Hearts that it'd feel weird to just completely ignore it, but at the same time having that stuff might be pushing the whole "video game characters only" restriction a bit too much. I don't think we'll see anything crazy like Disney characters as Spirits or Donald and Goofy in Sora's final smash (tho the latter would be sick and the only time I'd be okay with non-vg characters making an appearance) but ignoring it completely would be kinda odd, especially if Disney's gonna be credited in the game's title screen. I think Sora's chances are pretty good, but I can see Ricky Rat making things a little weird.

Dragon Quest bois - Honestly I'm surprised this hasn't happened yet considering how crazy popular Dragon Quest is in Japan. I'm not too familiar with DQ, but I know that it's a cultural phenomenon overseas and is the series that essentially popularized the JRPG genre, so the cultural significance is there. If we're considering Persona the posterchild of modern JRPGs in Smash, then it'd be great to have the granddaddy of the genre there to contrast with that. From my understanding Erdrick is pretty much the series' Cloud Strife, so he seems the most likely. Only problem is that the really isn't that popular anywhere else, so if they're trying to go for global appeal with the DLC I don't think they'll pick anyone from DQ, but if we're basing it on Japanese popularity alone then I think DQ has a shot.

Sephiroth/other FF characters: On one hand, if they wanted to go for a third party villain character from an already represented franchise, him and Eggman probably have the best chances, but on the other hand I'd rather have a protagonist from another game instead of another FF7 character (even if One Winged Angel in Smash would be great). I'm honestly more partial to Terra Branford since FF6 is one of the most iconic SNES RPGs and I could see them pushing her as a nostalgia pick. Also I just really like FF6 and Terra's design, so I might be biased. I'd also say Noctis with him being the most recent, but with Square recently cancelling the remaining FFXV DLC I doubt they're gonna wanna push him. Then again, this is assuming we even get any more Final Fantasy content in the game, and considering how little of it we have as is..... yeah I don't think we'll be seeing any more FF content anytime in the near future.

Chrono: Don't get me wrong, I love Chrono Trigger and would be estatic to see it represented in Smash, but he's in the same spot as Geno in that his franchise has been dormant for two decades now and is showing no signs of being revived. I'd love to be wrong, but I can't see them picking Crono when Square would wanna push their other active franchises.

Other Square reps: Honestly I wouldn't be surprised if the Square character turned out to be somebody completely unexpected. Out of anyone not on the list, I think Lara Croft has the best chances because of how much of a gaming icon she is. 2B is another likely candidate with NieR: Automata being considered a modern classic, though I'm not sure if her Soul Calibur 6 appearance deconfirms her. Neku also has a shot since his game recently got a Nintendo published Switch port, but he may be too niche compared to the other candidates. For all I know we could be getting The Quiet Man or the main chick from Life is Strange. The Joker announcement really set a precedent for unpredictability so it's hard to determine who's going to be next. I honestly can't wait to see how this is gonna play out because regardless of the results, I'm going to be surprised at whatever they end up announcing.

Crono really is the black sheep in this situation.

He doesn't have a massively popular franchise like Sora/Seph/the DQ reps, and he doesn't have large vocal support like Geno. All he has going for him is his cult classic status and the fact that SE released a half-assed port of Chrono Trigger on Steam this year.
Yasunori Mitsuda actually contributed 2 arrangements for Brawl and 3DS/Wii U, but he's absent this time for some reason.

@ Chrono Trigger music:
Most of the OST was composed by Mitsuda, who has worked on previous Smash games(most notably, he did Vs. Marx from Brawl and worked as a Sound Designer in 4) so I doubt he'd be hard to negotiate with.

The music tracks he didn't compose, as seen in this page are(unless I specify otherwise, assume it's from Uematsu):
Silent Light
Boss Battle 1(the one song composed by Noriko Matsueda)
Mystery of the Past(7-second jingle)
People Without Hope
Bike Chase
Undeground Sewer
Primitive Mountain
Burn! Bobonga
Tyran Castle
Sealed Door

Everything else is from Mitsuda and while I think some really iconic tracks would be missing such as Bike Chase and Boss Battle 1(though Matsueda is a different case as she stopped working in the industry after 2004 so I have no idea how easy she would be to deal with), all other battle themes(Battle with Magus, Boss Battle 2), the iconic location themes(Wind Scene, Corridors of Time) and all the character themes(Lavoss's Theme, Frog's theme, Roboroll) would be just as easy to get as any of the other 3rd party music.
In that case I'll change no one to one person!
Hello, Hitchcock!

Man, looking at the list more the more odd it is that Crono is even there. As others have said, Crono is pretty irrelevant, hasn’t made any new appearances in years and doesn’t have a super huge smash anbase. If the list is real, then why did they put him there? Is he an office rumour? Is he actually the character? Crono’s really the wild card in this whole situation.

I would not go full wild card on him, just that he is out of place among everyone else comparatively.

I think SE knows that Chrono Trigger is decently popular, enough to where they fixed up the PC port at least. Even if they dont have plans for the series I still think he is a possibility.

I think the fact that he’s there is quite telling. Nintendo’s going for who they think are huge, splashy characters to gain them some cred with the hardcore guys. I think Nintendo knows including Chrono Trigger in Smash would nab them massive fan cred. Legendary game beloved by a hardcore audience? Plus, it’s completely unexpected, yet in a ‘didn’t know I wanted this until now’ way.

But couldn't the same be said for Geno, with him being such a popular choice among fans? Sure, SMRPG may not be of the same acclaim as Chrono Trigger, but is still seens a highlight of the SNES and was how Square got a foothild in the western market.

He said "I didn't know I wanted this until now" kinda like the general overwhelming reaction Joker got.
Not "I top every American fan poll" kind of choices

That's what makes Crono and Geno differents.
Crono had a following in brawls, a rather big one, but was seen as a never Ever.

Geno's fanbase grew bigger and today it's the biggest one.

Yet both Characters are fundamentally in the same demographic timewise.

Idk, there was plenty of people who wanted Joker, it's just that they never voiced much support due to the odds not looking good. PP was a "I didn't know I wanted this" character.

It’s difficult to categorise characters with ‘I didn’t know I wanted this” as the smash fan base is so huge there’s always going to be differing reactions to character obviously. Just as Joker got mixed reactions, Pirahna plant did too. Crono would probably generally go over well though.

I feel like that is something we can't just assume though. If I have learned anything from Smash hype, there is a ton of people who will always find a way to be upset, no exceptions.

Permanently thinking about how Geno and Sora were cast away by some insiders

At this point it's one of two things either number one, literally nothing and it's all just speculation since there really isn't any way for them to even know sensitive stuff life that unless they're higher ups and is dubious to say the least since both Square, and Nintendo have been said to be leak bating pretty hard. Which in my opinion at this point from as much as we know which admittedly is not very much is probably what it is. Or number two it's possibly true their time tables were just wrong in terms of the announcement for whatever character it is but I doubt that since that doesn't really add up to me with how consistent Verge has been up until this point. Honestly I just want Nintendo to just tell us what all the characters are even if they're not done we just need to know what they are at least maybe then we can stop wracking our heads over something that may or may not happen. At this point at least in my opinion the community needs the closure of it so people can just get over/ and or accept what we're getting early on. I get people like being surprised by random announcements but honestly at this point it's more stressful than it is fun cause everyone thinks X or Y is definitely happening. Despite there really being no real proof of anything for anyone in particular, take Joker as proof of that.

Exactly, so we can not just assume that a character will be mostly appreciated. People will complain that they are not more current, or how they have only a game or two to there name, that sort of stuff. If there is a reason to complain, anything can become a mixed reaction.

Yoko Shimomura which is her name btw also composes for Smash Ultimate already so any music rights for KH wouldn't be a problem.

I know. I’m just making a guess. From what I’ve observed, generally the characters that cause the most discourse are newer characters who have a recent fanbase or characters who completely come out of nowhere. Crono is an older character who still has a fabvase, albeit not a huge one, and Crono has been a character wanted for a while. Therfore I’d wager there wouldn’t b much discourse.

Fair, I have seen that trend as well. Though I would argue he would be a bit more on the out of nowhere side, considering the state of his franchise.
I do wonder what Reggie considers a "surprise" though. His words can be taken any number of ways, though they do offer possible clues.

Chrono Trigger is an incredibly popular game though, it's just not really talked about in the "hardcore" Smash community because it's deemed as unlikely.
It still remains as "one of the best games of all time"(if not "THE best") in the gaming community and you can still find people talking about it years after anything noteworthy has happened to the series.
Not to mention how many other games get inspired by it, just to name a few exanples, I read something about I Am Setsuna having double techs(some of which were basically the same as in CT) and I recently found out about Timespinner, which is a Metroidvania inspired by both SotN and CT.

But the thing is, if Square knows how much people love it to the point they'd start rumors about Crono being in Smash to catch leakers, then why the **** don't they do **** with the series?

I’m aware of Crono Trigger’s legendary status. It’s a great game. But in that case, why isn’t Eight there? Where’s Terra? Hell, where’s a Secret of Mana character? Crono feels like the odd one out in the list.

That's the point, none of those games are considered as legendary as CT. That's just how big it is.

Secret of Mana? Yeah I’ll give you that. Dragon Quest 8? If we’re talking worldwide then fine. Final fantasy 6? Ehhhhhhh. I’d say that both games are pretty equally legendary in their own right. What I’m trying to get at is that Crono is a bit out of place among all the other characters in the list except maybe geno. Just gets me thinking.
