Not fan demand anywhere near as much as K Rool or Geno or Ridley, obviously. It was quite a lot, though. On a similar level to Chrom. Not to mention, I'm sure tons of casual Nintendo fans who never talk about Smash online were very happy about Incineroar, too. He is a starter pokemon, after all.

I'm not setting myself up for disappointment. The way I see it, we're either going to get 5 DLC characters I don't care about but other people do (like Joker or Banjo) or we're going to get 5 DLC characters that include one or both of the only two characters I want. Either way, it'd still be 5 fan-demanded picks. Assuming they weren't already in, Chrom/Dark Samus/Bayonetta/Ken could be the other 4, and would all be fan-demanded picks. I wouldn't care about them, but they all were highly requested by Smash fans.

I'm an optimist, sure. I just think if Nintendo only cared about selfish goals then Joker never would've gotten in at all. Do I think Geno is 100% likely? Yes. No. Do I think each of the remaining 4 DLC characters will all make tons of people happy? Yes. 100% Yes. I have zero reason to believe otherwise.
Incineroar was hated. Hated and hated and hated. Derided by Decidueye fans, derided by #TeamReal.
People setting Geno up as a martyr; here's a REAL one for you. Let's not rewrite history and pretend Incineroar was loved anywhere near the level of Chrom.
(He's still in though haha suck on that haters)

In no world is Ken highly-requested by Smash fans

Nintendo obviously has things above promoting characters in mind. A lot of it will be fan demand as well. But don't get your hopes overtly up.

I mean I'm aware of this. I'm just saying that there might be a future event where they state otherwise. Companies do not always stay consistent with their information; so we should all take it with a grain of salt while it's just word of mouth alone. For example; we do not know if PP has a stage due to inconsistent information. So all we can do is wait it out for clearer information. Does this make sense?
Not really.

This isn't "word of mouth," it's an official release from Nintendo's press department. It isn't a typo, nor does it conflict with any official information similar to Piranha Plant's reveal in the Smash Direct vs. the press release, where the information could've been confused between Piranha Plant as an individual character vs. as a part of the Fighters Pass. This press release also hasn't been edited in the over a week that it's been out unlike Piranha Plant's, so I'd say it's safe to trust the statement.

Atlus likely had to clear that for the press release; We have official word that Persona is a spin-off of the Shin Megami Tensei series.

Is Diddy Kong a Mario character?
DKC is nowhere near as closely tied to Mario as Yoshi's Island. The first Yoshi game literally even still had 'Super Mario World' in the title, Yoshi is a direct offshoot of the Mario series, whereas DKC exists entirely as its own series with the Kongs popping up in the Party, Karting and Sports games that bring in the shared Mario universe between Super Mario, DKC, Yoshi's Island, and Wario Land/Ware.

Persona, like Yoshi's Island to Mario, is a direct offshoot of Shin Megami Tensei, even keeping it as part of the title in the earlier games of the Persona sub-series.

tl;dr Bad comparison, Diddy is 'sort of' a Mario character but his series isn't an offshoot of Mario like Yoshi is directly an offshoot of Mario, like Persona is to SMT.

Joker has never been in a Shin Megami Tensei game though, has he? Even Diddy has been in Mario games (Mario Kart, specifically) but he's only "sort of" a Mario character? Because that's exactly how I'd describe Joker. He's technically a SMT character. But, then again, Link is also technically a Mario character. He appeared in Mario Kart 8. (There's even a spirit in Smash bros of Link riding a bike, and it's classified as a Mario Series spirit, which is absolutely silly.) Sure, yes. Persona is a spin-off of SMT. Warioware and DKC are spinoffs of Mario. That doesn't mean Joker is a SMT character. Until Joker shows up in SMT, he's only technically from SMT. Otherwise, Captain Syrup, Banjo Kazooie, Jimmy T, and Funky Kong are all Mario characters.

Sure, Joker isn't a Shin Megami Tensei character.

That being said, he still represents the Shin Megami Tensei franchise.

That's fair! I can accept that. Like I said, I do agree that Joker is technically a SMT character. Just, only technically.

As far as "advertisement" goes, though, it doesn't really do much advertising for that series. Can we agree on that, at least?

I'll say that's fair in turn. Joker isn't a promotional pick, unless the Persona 5 Port does happen, in which case he becomes a promotional pick. Even if that does occur I would argue that he isn't necessarily a promotional pick, and more so represents an iconic and historic third party series (Shin Megami Tensei) as a popular pick within said series. The promotion of a Persona 5 port, the first time mainline Persona would appear on a Nintendo system, is a benefit of that.

Regardless, I feel like this argument has lost its point, nor does it further anyone's point in regards to the Square Enix as Joker could set a precedent of characters being revealed before announcements in their series, but hasn't as we don't know whether a Persona 5 port is coming or not.
All I know is that I'd be scared to see a PessimisticSlifer.

Guys, it’s Nintendo who chose these characters. Sakurai just agrees to see if he can make them work. Personally, I see Joker as both a Nintendo/Sakurai choice. On the Nintendo side of things Joker, does seem like a business choice character to further strengthen the relationship between Atlus and in a way SEGA. Then, you also have the Sakurai influence, he’s spoke out about Persona 5 in one of his Famitsu columns, he loved the games art style, more specifically the menus and the UI.

Not only does Joker come from a game that Sakurai adores, but also moveset potential. Joker’s moveset was probably another reason they chose him. They have a lot they can pull from in just one game. He can be a very creative character, and I can also see him being our most completely different magic user to have ever been in Smash yet!

I just hope Nintendo chooses Geno or Crono or better Bandana Waddle Dee for DeeLC

I don’t think Nintendo is gonna want all their DLC to be promotional. In the end all that matters is if a character will sell. Joker will sell because he’s popular. They had an entire ballot to determine popularity of characters like Geno, and according to Sakurai he is actually popular. Even ignoring that, presentation can do A LOT. Say you’re a casual fan who don’t know what a geno is, and you look at the DLC for the game. And you see this cool-looking puppet with a neat trailer, and you might be inclined to buy him. I don’t think DLC drastically lowers Geno’s chances just yet.
(Side-note, I know Nintendo themselves said it, but I very much disagree with the idea that Joker represents SMT)
It's a character with well over a decade of support history. Passion is what kept Geno apart of the conversation. Heck, just recently in the Geno thread a long time Geno supporter that had been around for well over a decade decided that it was time to retire and pass the torch to the newer fans. As silly as that may sound, being a Geno fan means carrying a long legacy of fan support.
I’d like to see this.

I know. But you are confusing distribution to producing. Legendary is the one producing the film, which makes it a Legendary production. Universal was first just meant to distribute it. It's not like Illumination where Universal own that company. Because Legendary is moving back to collaborate with Warner Brothers, Warner Brothers get to be the distributor.

Nintendo is working with BOTH Universal, and Disney right now Universal is making a Mario CGI movie and Nintendo has a deal with Disney for a Nintendo Switch centric TV show. Also yes Disney has a lot of control over Sora no **** you could say the same about any character owned by any studio because they OWN them, that's an expectation. In Sora's case Disney have stated already they're more than okay with the idea of Sora in Smash if they do him justice which they would cause this is Sakurai we're talking about a self proclaimed KH fan and if the fan demand is there which it is. As for Disney stifling Sakurai's creative vision for Sora about the only thing they'd want is for him to not do anything uncharacteristic of his character I.E. flipping people off or some stupid **** like that which is fair and is what any other studio would want if their third party IP were to appear in Smash. You can't really use that as a fault that's just since it makes no real sense when you think about it for more than like 10 seconds.
You are missing a key point of the "Disney has said they are okay with it" The Disney dude that has stated that thing is a VP from Disney of Japan. Not Bob Iger himself at Disney of America. The dude from Disney of Japans statement is sort of like believing Waluigi would get in after Reggie said he would tell them about his popularity. With the stuff I heard from people that have worked at Disney combined that Bob Iger is part of the ridiculous theater demand with the Last Jedi... I just can't see that happening.

But then again, if I'm wrong, that awesome for Sora fans.

Yeah, exactly that.

Persona Q and Q2 are on 3DS, and that’s not counting the decades of history the Megami Tensei franchise has with Nintendo.

They weren’t making a rant, they were just putting forward a point. We can debate Geno as well.

Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 is Switch-exclusive. Marvel is owned by Disney.
Marvel Ultimate Alliance IP last I checked was owned by Activision and not Marvel. Sure, Marvel is owned by Disney, but Marvels rights for different areas are still shattered around since they sold off the rights to get resurrection from their bankruptcy. Sure Spiderman is in the MCU, but the movie rights is still at Sony for example.

I’d like to see this.
Here is one of his posts he had made when he was considering his retirement. I decided to check up on his activity and saw he was still making visits, but the Geno thread did have a conversation with him about his retirement and reasons. Also, perhaps it is kinda hard to leave a site right away when you have been regularly visiting for over a decade. That sort of thing becomes a habit.
I haven't given up on Geno. It's coming to the realization that I shouldn't be one of the main people of the fanbase anymore, largely because of my age. Younger people need to take over, people who haven't been around here since Brawl was development. I'm old. Thirty one is super old by gamer standards if you're not the one actually developing games or in the industry. If you ain't suit and tie, you're kind of a weirdo by most people's standards. Twenty five is when most professional gamers start thinking about retirement and I'm now six years past that. I can stick around but I shouldn't be the one leading discussions. I shouldn't be the one doing research and making the lengthy theorycrafts. I've technically done it for four games give my first foray into Smash speculation was way back in 2002 with the Adult Swim forums. That's sixteen years with thirteen seriously backing Geno online. Some of you here were still toddlers back then. People I'm now running into at tournaments weren't even born yet. ****in' YIKES, amirite? That's how long this has been going for me and I'm simply... tired. Yes, people like reading my stuff and people seemingly respect me but being the equivalent of Bernie Sanders when it comes to video game speculation isn't exactly flattering. For everyone's sake, I need to back off. If there's fan campaigns, I can help but my time as one of the carnival barkers for this fanbase has long passed and my relevance is strained as it is. It's time to pass on the proverbial torch.

Had to double-check I was looking at the right thread, is there seriously a debate whether Joker qualifies as an SMT character?

I mean, answer me this: is Yoshi a Mario character? Both of these questions have the same answer.
In the grand scheme of things technically no joker ain't SMT he is persona an actual smt rep would be demi feind or something joker is just persona since atlus stopped labeling persona games as SMT after persona 4

I dunno why we're still discussing Joker here but really, calling Joker a SMT rep is really stupid because if he was supposed to be one, we wouodn't have gotten him. Joker is from Persona, he represents Persona and it's just that simple.

Plus if he was supposed to represent SMT then he wasn't a good choice on that front because he is only one aspect of a larger whole that is the Tensei series

It could give us an idea of who they are going for with the Square rep. I personally believe that Joker is a major hit against DQ, but that may just be me.

I wish I could believe that too but I trust the "Sora's out" way too much. Geno is on thin ice so the next obvious choice is a DQ character.

Simply put,

NO

A significant amount of Pokémon fans hated Incineroar’s design, people in the Smash community were more into the likes of Decidueye and Lycanroc and were more popular and were better received, and a lot people not into Pokémon weren’t hyped by Incineroar being the last reveal and also by how much he was thrown in people’s faces by insiders.

Chrom and Incineroar aren’t even comparable in popularity in terms of Smash.

Although Sakurai tries to make it seem that Smash Ultimate is entirely based on fan demand, there are still some characters that weren’t fan favorites and was just up to him.

Lmao. I hated Incineroar too. I wanted Decidueye way more. If you can't tell by my profile picture, I really like Pokemon. There was a lot of hate, sure. I'm not saying the requests outweighed the hate. I'm saying there were a lot of people who wanted him. I honest to god saw way more people cheering for Incineroar than Decidueye, though that might just be because we all thought Decidueye was a lock. Chrom is a great example, because lots of people wanted him, but tons of others hated the idea of even one more FE rep.

I kinda know what they’re ’s saying, they are basically saying that Dragon Quest is too safe of a choice for Square, and we’re suppose to have “characters that you wouldn’t expect to make it into Smash.”

As much as I would like to see someone from DQ make it. Dragon Quest does fit the expected bill, when you look at it, it is the safe choice in terms of a Square pick. It’s not an out there choice at all, especially when you look at the other characters from the list especially the wild card picks like Sephiroth, Sora, or even Chrono, those would be wow like choices.

With Dragon Quest, the reaction would basically be, “yeah we all kinda knew that this would come.” There wouldn’t be no surprise factor at all compared to the other names.

Yes, but that's probably not the main reason. Literally, Piranha Plant is the only character we've gotten in Ultimate so far that WASN'T a fan-demand outcry, and he doesn't really even advertise anything. Even Incineroar had a ton of fan demand. (Though, Incineroar was likely put in just because Sakurai wanted him, regardless of fan demand.)

I honestly think the DLC is going to be entirely fan-demand characters, if not Sakurai-demand characters or some combination of both. I'm not just talking about Geno or Sora or Banjo or whoever else, either. If we get a character that isn't highly requested and is just an "advertisement" character, I will be thoroughly surprised.
Lmao Incineroar wasn’t highly requested. Neither were guys like Richter and Ken for that matter.

For the record, I don’t think Joker and the DLC will be advertising directed, but I also don’t think they’ll be fanservice directed. If you wanted to make a fanservice DLC pack you open with someone like Banjo or Geno or Bandanna Dee. Joker to me says DLC will be relatively iconic and beloved, ‘hypey’ third parties.

Activision doesn’t own the IP, they used to have the rights and they lapsed. Now Tecmo Koei are making this game. The rights for Marvel’s stuff are only shattered when it comes to movies (and technically theme parks), but they have full control of the IP for licensing in video games.

This website, reddit, and a few of my friends on Discord beg to differ. Most of the time I saw "man I really want Incineroar in Smash but it's probably gonna be Decidueye." There was no hate toward Incineroar until Vergeben said he was in. Richter wasn't requested by anyone... except for Castlevania fans, especially in Japan. Ken was in a weird place being caught between "I expect him" and "I want him" for most people. Not to mention, Incineroar was likely decided on before anyone knew who the fan-favorite Alola starter would be, just like Greninja. They took a gamble, and ended up picking the second most popular starter. As much as I love Decidueye, Incineroar's moveset ended up being way cooler and different than anything we have in Smash. Sakurai literally brought back Pichu just so he could say everyone is here, and you think he's not trying to make the fans happy?

There was actually a ton of hate towards Incineroar’s design when it was revealed. Plus the fact remains that they didn’t pick the most popular Gen 7 Pokémon, nor the most popular starter, nor the most popular final stage starter for either the Pokémon fanbase or the Smash fanbase. You claim he was popular on this site, but at the time he was revealed he was at around 30 supporters. The fact remains that fan demand was no factor in his inclusion.

As for Richter, he wasn’t demanded by fans for Smash, he was just the most popular Belmont in Japan.

I already mentioned this, there WAS a lot of hate towards Incineroar, and I'm not saying the requests outweighed the hate. I'm just stating the fact that a lot of people really wanted him. And again, he was likely decided on before S/M came out. They had no idea which starter people would like. People generally like starter pokemon. That was it.

Richter wasn't a character that anyone wanted unless they were actually fans of Castlevania. If they were fans of Castlevania, then they probably wanted Alucard or Richter more than Simon. Not to mention, he was an echo fighter that took very little effort for making Castlefania vans happier.

That's interesting. What makes you think that? I don't really see how Joker could hold DQ back from getting in.
Well, SMT was one of the three classic pillars of the JRPG genre right? The other two were FF and DQ. Now, if I were Nintendo and planning to put in a classic DQ character like Erdrick as my Square rep, putting in a classic SMT rep would accomplish something amazing. It would really showcase the crossover power of Smash Bros, and how you can representatives from these three classic JRPG series. It also certainly helps that SMT has had a good Nintendo history and relationship. Instead, we are getting Joker, the most current Persona protagonist. And while Persona did indeed come out of the SMT series, there is no arguing that it has outgrown it and left it behind. Literally. They dropped SMT title for P5. And while there is a history with Nintendo in the form of PQ and PQ2, that pales to the legacy the home SMT series had to Nintendo. To not maximize the representation of that legacy when having both classic FF and DQ reps planned seems like a mistake. So my conclusion is that DQ is not a factor in this equation. I know others will feel differently as many still consider Persona just as much apart of the SMT series as any of the home games, but when I see a spin off start making it's own spin off's, a ton of which I may had, there is a degree of separation in my eyes.

From 2chan, it's buzzing right now because it predicted right the grandblue fighting game revealed today
Vergeben and Hitagi were already spreading that rumor long before the random 2chan post and, according to PolarPanda's reputable source, nobody knows the DLC at all, let alone to such an extent. I wouldn't put any stock in that.

So we agree then, not all characters got in because of fan want.

People confuse "popularity" with "requested". Jusy because a character doesn't have a vocal fanbase saying "add X character please" doesn't mean they aren't popular.
Ken is the second character from the biggest fighting game series in existence.
Richter is easily the most popular Belmont.
Any Pokemon starter is popular unless they're Meganium.

These characters may not have been talked about within the dedicated Smash communities but they certainly had a lot of fans before their reveals.
