You know how in Melee you can press R or L in the air and then Z to with certain characters (Link, Young Link, and Samus) and they would throw out there grappling hooks or whatever. In Melee they would latch onto whatever section of the arena you'd manage to hit giving a heavy character like Link a better chance at survival.

In Brawl, you'll only click to the edge of the stage and not a lower section of the level. For example, Brawl Final Destination. Your hookshot/clawshot/Grapple beam grabs the ledge you'd normaly clutch with your hand.

Okay, so in Melee. If I was Link, and I was in Final Destination, and I was coming back to the stage relatively low in space. I know a Spin Slash isn't reaching the ledge but if I get lucky and latch on to the wall of FD I could pull myself up.

In Brawl clawshot/grapple beam doesn't stick to the wall, just the edge. So shoot out a claw shot in low space would be pointless.

Shooting the clawshot higher up where my spinslash could propel me the vertical distance to reach the edge would be poitnless, too.

So to anyone who has Brawl, my question is...

Are teether recorveries useless?

It prevents against edge-guarding though. I think that is the best reason to use them.

The ice climbers belay move tether recovers now, in imo is one of there best improvements. The amounf of times I've lost Nana due to a non auto sticking ledge will now be resolved.

Most characters with tether recovery have other options (olimar and ivysaur being the only exceptions) If you mix and match then tether recovery is useful.

So one minute you say that edge hogging is useless than you post a video of Olimar countering an edge hogger?!

Samus has a third jump

I can't speak for Ivysaur but that just may be a balace (charizard has glide)

Tether recovery is a good thing because it gives more options to recover with.

^Well I thought it was useless but I found that cool vid. Thats how smash works, stuff looks useless until a master proves us wrong.

Yeah my new opinion: tether is not useless. Olimar vid showed that you can over come the ledgehog problem and towards the end of the vid, Olimar pulls a quick sick grab while it looked like he was going to die.

Right behind you with a knife.
Technically with ZSS's flip jump, Olimar's Pikmin throw, and the fact that you can switch Ivysaur, I guess the three tether dependant characters do have options against ledge hoggers...I wonder if Ivysaur can use the razorleaf like Olimar used his Pikmin. In any case, even if it could be gaurded, the tether recovery still wouldn't be useless, since it can still be used to recover in most situations. v(o_o)v

That's unfortunate. I always loved that aspect of Melee. I really don't see why it was taken out.

Shows the uselessness against ledgehogging:

while Ivy can switch... he can't switch in the air. If he could do that he wouldn't have a problem at all.

Ivysuar for worst recovery in the game?

Only reason i see that is the razor leaf projectile isn't as umm.... mobile as the pikman throw. Startup AND ending lag are longer, so it leaves u more vulnerable to an edgehogger falling off and just hitting u while ur throwing it.

I wanna see a vid like that where an Ivy gets around the edgehog. Then i'll be convinced otherwise.

In that video Olimar throws a purple pikmin to knock off his oppoent, purples don't latch on, so that i can understand. But Olimar throws a red one at MK, does that force them off the ledge? I would rather recieve 5/10% damage instead of letting Olimar recover.

Samus and link have traditional third jumps, so their tethers are really just another option for reaching the ledge. As for olimar, ivysaur, and zss, there are certainly ways to try to get around it, but its definitely a disadvantage.
