New: Ryu Hayabusa, Hero, Sans

Been busy and haven't had much time to think this through, so I'll act on a whim. Priority will be dealt toward companies and developers without characters on the roster yet. Hayabusa gets added first, giving Koei Tecmo a designated character as one of Nintendo's most loyal partners without one. As a slightly biased pick that I still think makes a ton of sense, I'm adding Sans and granting Smash its first true indie character from an immensely popular game worldwide. And as a direct contrast to Hayabusa's classic legacy, Sans joins Steve and Solaire as a character emblematic of the more contemporary era.

And despite my initial claim of prioritizing new companies, I'm just going to add Hero. I waivered on Kazuya or Snake here too, but Dragon Quest feels especially slimy to ignore and as for the others I'd just rather experiment with something new. Here's hoping I'll find the space to slide a few of the missing ones back in at the end, time will tell. Really getting down to the wire here.

This round is close to the end, and I figured I’d add some more popular fan picks here. Isaac is obvious, and is heavily demanded. And K. Rool was a heavily wanted character people wanted going into Ultimate.

Incineroar is more so a pick I figured would beef up Pokémon just that tiny bit more. Same goes for Chrom with Fire Emblem.

I think right now, a lot of franchises are in a VERY good position. DK, Fire Emblem, Pokémon, Xenoblade are all in good positions right now. And next round will mainly be rounding out other franchises present here.

New: Rosalina & Luma, Falco, Villager, Jigglypuff

Not a super exciting round, just slotting in some staples and more glaring omissions. Rosalina is one of the more unique Nintendo characters I've left absent up to this point, and while I don't connect too much with her style of puppeteer gameplay... it's distinct, and her whole vibe is something pretty fresh. Villager should have been here a while ago, but I'm a contrarian and wanted to see how long I could ride with just Isabelle and Nook. My stance on Villager is that they're a good addition, and they were probably the right choice for Smash 4 - just, personally, I'd opt for the more defined characters first and I think they could represent more or less the same basic things. But since Villager is here, I don't know if I'd bother cutting him unless it gets really down to the wire.

It feels like it's about time for Falco or Jigglypuff. I like the dynamic both of them bring to the roster. Falco provides Fox with his friendly rival, and I really do love him. I opted for Wolf first because I like his moveset better but I do also really enjoy the creative liberties taken with Falco. And he's kind of the more standard series staple. Jigglypuff weighs out the Pokemon lineup a bit with an additional "cute" mon against the mold of cooler humanoid characters outside of Pikachu. Sure she's shown her age a bit by now, but I'd miss her.

Special shoutout to Lucas, I think I might throw him in next time I get the chance as a last minute self-serving pick. And Dark Samus, who nearly made it but I forgot I hadn't added Falco yet. Could have picked out a few newcomers too but I don't wanna overdo it, and I think I have a pretty decent spread already. With regards to Waluigi and Saki, who could maybe slip in later I dunno.

Here we are. The final round. I think I did a great job rounding out the villains together here, with Waluigi being thrown a bone, Wolf and Sephiroth returning, and a plethora of new and old antagonists to spice up the roster.

I considered DJ Octavio, but first, I think he’d be a better boss, akin to Giga Bowser, Ganon, and the like. And two, I had other priorities. The Mii fighter trio is complete, with Swordfighter finally joining.

And Sheik is here to boost Zelda with a much needed character. With Young Link out, and Ganondorf adopting the TOTK style, nothing was left for OOT to have a character. Well, here’s Sheik to better round out Zelda’s legacy.

Honourable mention to Mio, who I considered for this final round, but with this many Xenoblade characters, and especially from 3 alone, we will have to wait another day for Welsh catgirls on my Smash roster.

And a mention to 2B. I would have included her if there was room, but there isn’t. She would have gotten if there was spare room, though I decided to prioritise villains.

Also, here’s a note. One of my barred fighters was Meowscarda, who still isn’t listed under the Barred Fighters section.

Alright, since this seems like we're wrapping up I'm gonna be self-serving and give this roster a couple finishing touches that make it my own. But first, Lucas comes back - the protagonist of my favorite game - and I felt some guilt about neglecting Snake so he's back too. And then I added Master Chief to complete this neat little Microsoft trio, and give the game one final BIG crossover event. Mr. Sandman and Marina are my never-ever picks.

I felt like a second Punch-Out character is fairly justified if the likes of Mother or Kid Icarus could get one. The enemy boxers are all super memorable and fun and it's been a shame none of them have appeared as even an AT yet. Glass Joe and King Hippo were prospects, but when it comes to Joe I wasn't sure how well a pure joke character may land, and Hippo just strides the line a bit too close to K. Rool. I like Mr. Sandman because he's a different kind of foil for Mac. He's not necessarily breaking the rules like the others, he's just insanely strong and scary. A slower, heavier boxer more focused on asserting his place on stage rather than being a mobile speedster like Mac. Also yeah, Punch-Out is one of my favorite Nintendo series.

Marina is one of my favorite video game characters, and I think Treasure's voice is so unique and would have such a distinct presence in Smash. I almost put Saki in instead, but last minute said screw it I'm gonna go all out. In a perfect world, Marina is seen as some synonymous icon of the N64 era like Banjo and is treated like some kind of long lost cousin. I think her role as an aerial centric grappler would just be so much fun, something that Smash Remix seems to have validated for me. But she's been a dream pick of mine before that, and someone who just totally looks the part to be a great Smash character. So consider these more out there picks to be a gift to myself… and yeah, the roster has two Marinas on it, what about it?

I can’t help but feel the winners feel obvious right now. I think a lot of us messed up by adding too many characters from one series. Still, the game’s been fun and I’ve enjoyed it.

I wanted to say, I commend everyone on staying true to their own tastes and wackier ideas. I almost regret playing it a bit safe up to this point, but I hope people were able to connect with some of my curveball picks nonetheless. This has been a fun exercise in trying to find balance, making hard decisions and honestly just trying to get in Sakurai's head... while also attempting to let the roster reflect myself and get people thinking. I'm happy that people seem to have liked it.

There are some picks I wanted to squeeze in (Waluigi, a Metal Slug character, some weirdo arcade pick like Twinbee or maybe Bub / Bob) but even with as massive as these rosters got it was impossible to tap into everything I wanted. I'm pretty satisfied with how it panned out but I'm definitely curious to know what everyone would have done differently.
