Additions: Bowser, Princess Peach, Pokemon Trainer (Ultimate’s version), Isabelle

Bowser, Princess Peach, and Isabelle feel like logical picks given their prominence to two of Nintendo’s core series. Pokemon Trainer is a bold move to prioritize here, but I find the fighter as an important way to represent the Pokemon series.

New: Peach, Bowser, Zelda, Tails, Chun-Li, Sephiroth​

Since most others seem to be playing it safe with first parties I’m going to continue paving this separate path. Sonic, Street Fighter and FF7 get to fill out more of their major players parallel to the usual suspects in Mario and Zelda. The addition of Peach, Zelda and Chun-Li continues to balance out the gender spread as well.

Pretty standard additions across the board. Maybe Ganon would've fit better, considering I added the "rival" characters for other series, but Zelda is the series' namesake and helps with gender balance. Tom Nook is the first newcomer, as Animal Crossing is arguably an A-list series at this point, and Tom Nook is one of the most recognizable Nintendo characters still not in. Someone like Resetti or Blathers would maybe be more unique, but I'll probably end up adding one of them down the road anyway.
