Bowser, Princess Peach, and Isabelle feel like logical picks given their prominence to two of Nintendo’s core series. Pokemon Trainer is a bold move to prioritize here, but I find the fighter as an important way to represent the Pokemon series.

Since most others seem to be playing it safe with first parties I’m going to continue paving this separate path. Sonic, Street Fighter and FF7 get to fill out more of their major players parallel to the usual suspects in Mario and Zelda. The addition of Peach, Zelda and Chun-Li continues to balance out the gender spread as well.

Pretty standard additions across the board. Maybe Ganon would've fit better, considering I added the "rival" characters for other series, but Zelda is the series' namesake and helps with gender balance. Tom Nook is the first newcomer, as Animal Crossing is arguably an A-list series at this point, and Tom Nook is one of the most recognizable Nintendo characters still not in. Someone like Resetti or Blathers would maybe be more unique, but I'll probably end up adding one of them down the road anyway.

Star Fox is my first dormant franchise to give a chance on the roster given its legacy during the ‘90s. Xenoblade brings in another relevant Nintendo IP, and I went with Aegis to help maintain some gender balance (I brought in two transforming fighters pretty early on, but they’re the best implementations of transforming fighters in the SSB series so far). Ryu feels like the next step forward given his history in fighting games and crossovers. Bomberman is more of a creative liberty this round for other non-Nintendo fighters, and his franchise has been running for forty or so years.

In this reassessed, slightly more generalized gaming roster I'm trying to be kinda outside the box on which characters take priority. Steve gets added to the third party lineup on behalf of Minecraft's massive contemporary impact, it's good for us to keep things balanced with old and new. And that's something I kept in mind adding Wii Fit Trainer as well, who represents more casual titles and the Wii era which was a benchmark in Nintendo and gaming history.

Donkey Kong is an obvious add, and Little Mac is a popular 'retro' adjacent choice whose source title is one of the most prestigious classic NES games and Nintendo arcade titles. IMO Punch-Out's influence can be felt across a variety of combat oriented, trial and error styled games like Dark Souls. And a speedy bruiser archetype is a viable character to have around for roster dynamics.
