I’ve been getting really burnt out on fandom discourse lately. I mean I never liked it, but I have a lower tolerance these days.

Seeing people get all worked up over stuff like redesigns, getting mad that this character is in this thing or isn’t in that thing, calling every new movie corporate slop, misinformation, arguments, etc. I just don’t have the energy for it rn.

I know the answer is to stop spending so much time in online fandom spaces and to get a life, but that requires effort so…

Me after seeing 75 trillion multiple hour-long video "essays" on why "insert movie/show/book/video game here" is the worst thing since stale bread in my Youtube feed.

It also requires making compromises about the kind of people you spend time with since the odds of finding a social group that can bond over a particular topic with enough people for legitimate bonds to form irl are very low. When you only meet people offline, you have to settle. Don’t force yourself to settle.

I’ve been complaining about this for years. It’s been here for years. After enduring it for so long I have this… vengeful desire to turn that scorn out on others.
Well anyone telling you you’re dumb for liking/not liking something is stupid.

HOWEVER, I should note that sometimes some people make their displeasure known in ways that make them come off as a total jerkwad. And the subsequent negative reactions are less about trying to force them into enjoying something they don’t, and more about clowning them for getting so worked up and requesting they chill tf about.

For example:

“I don’t really like this [thing].” Okay!

“This [thing] ****ing SUCKS and I don’t understand why you’re all okay with them RUINING THE FRANCHISE like this! RAAAAAGH!!!” Not okay.

So just make sure you don’t do the second one :nifty:

Welcome to adulthood. Taxes are due in two days. ;D

Being serious, I understand you. I don't know if I'll be able to be as invested in next Smash's speculation as I was for Ultimate. I'm older and in a better headspace so I'm just not as interested. Nothing wrong with it; it's just one of those things that can happen with time.

You don't necessarily gotta get outta fandom spaces, but you do gotta find the right spaces, assert your boundaries, and be intentional with where you engage and where you just don't post.

I've been hanging out a lot on Discord in the years since Ultimate and I've found some good communities there. I also try to focus more on playing games instead of talking about them.

You could really say I've come a long way from my CSS starer days...

I think going "Switch 2 Edition games eill be a Switch 1 cart with a download code for the upgrade" with boxart having warnings to make that clear and then going "Actually we lied" two days later
I think the boxart messages are to communicate the upgrade is included. It says the Switch 2 edition comprises the original game and upgrade pack. For whatever reason, instead of assuming it meant upgrade pack on the card, people jumped to it meaning upgrade pack on a code. It would be a bit like someone looking at the Cyberpunk boxart and wondering if the DLC included is on a code because it doesn't explicitly say on the game card.

Regardless, the bungled customer service didn't help.

I wonder what’s causing it?
Well I’m pretty sure iirc some of the mods implied the admins have not really been around. Which means no site maintenance is probably being doing and any internal data needed to keep it up, likely isn’t being taken care of either. Resulting in the frequent crashes.

The crashes themselves will probably eventually pass. The site's staff will work on and fix it when they have time. Regardless of how active the site is, they're all got lives outside of SSB and this website.

I'm just surprised by how random the timing of the crashes is. The Switch 2 was unveiled like a week ago but I don't think that the site got that much of an overflow in traffic to be the cause of it, especially with the lack of a new Smash announcement.

It’s probably less traffic overflow and more something going wrong with the site’s internals

Yooka-Laylee, and Banjo-Tooie to a degree, are games that get easier the more you play them. You have to spend the time learning where everything is to really "get it" and start navigating well.

Banjo-Kazooie is still better because it uses a principle common in open world games where you see an interesting landmark in the distance and are drawn to it (Hbomberguy explained this to me in one of his Fallout videos, can't remember which one) which makes the process of learning where everything is a lot easier on the player. It's part of what makes that first game's worlds so good and I wish more of the games that tried to follow up on it, even it's own sequel, did it better.

Old Smashboards veterans remember and were here for the 2013 DdoS attacks that shut the site down entirely for over a month.
I’ve been here since 2004. The DDOS attack was the single largest push to FB this site has ever seen. It essentially was the beginning of the end of Smashboards.

maybe we should all move to the Smashboards discord server.
If you want to take Smashboards off of life support, don’t do this.

I could be wrong since I joined recently but another decline happened at some point after 2017 since that was the last year where there were tier lists made here outside of P+ and the fact that Ultimate apparently doesn't have a backroom.

Honestly, I would be pretty sad if this forum ended.

Forums always feel cozy and comfy for my ADHD-ridden, anxiety-riddled brain, and I don't wanna end up losing that.

The weather's getting better, and Smashboards is crashing 24/7.

It's a sign to go outside
I remeber someone hacked into smashboards and when you went to the site, the page opened up on a black screen with a picture of Drake playing one of his songs

do you ever stop to think about all the people on Smashboards that don’t show up anymore.

I feel this great sense of loss, like lots of people are gone. But I can’t remember who any of them are.

I'm watching a playthrough of Monster World IV to see how its different from its remake.

I'd play it myself but that pyramid world was a living hell and I don't want to revisit that.

'Course I do, but eh. Just hoping they're out there being their best selves.

Let's be real. We're the weird ones sticking around on an old site some 8 years after the last Smash game dropped. :nifty:

Yeah, there’s a few friends I miss seeing around. Like Moomew, or Nate, or JD. But you can’t expect people to hang around an obscure Nintendo web forum every day for years.

Wherever they are they’re probably doing alright! And who knows, maybe they’ll show up again whenever a new Smash is on the way.

Yeah fair. I just can’t imagine not dropping by here daily. This has been the closest thing I’ve had to a recurring social space since highschool.
