I think a bit of the Ult newcomers and one or two 3DS/Wii U newcomers need reworks, but you could probably get a statisfactory rework with just the "Olimar only has 3 Pikmin now" approach.
I'm curious which ult newcomers do you need reworks I find smash 4 and onwards newcomers to be a bit more interesting kit wise

Min Min is the big one, that character is unsalvagable and needs a complete rework, but some others that need the kind of major tweaks you'd only get between releases and not in updates I'd say are
  • Hero
  • Mega Man
  • Steve
  • Belmonts
I didn't ever play as or against Kazuya but he also seems like a really obvious example from a glance and what I've heard. Little Mac maybe too.

I think Hero Kit is really fun and interesting I love how he pulls up an actual menu and has a ton of different spells. My main issue is that There aren't any symbols next to them so if your playing somewhere with a different language it becomes a mess.
Megaman kit is nice as well wish His Special moves weren't so megaman 2 focused though.
I think Steve kit is fine but some numbers Def need to be tweaked and they should also make it so that if you destroy his crafting table it takes longer to come back or he can't summon it to him.
And belmonts just need a slight speed increase and up b to be better

I can understand what the developers were going for when they were making Little Mac's moveset, but to make his air game and recovery be abysmally bad will always feel controversial. When you look at Jigglypuff, despite being designed to focus on aerial battles, it's more than capable of making KOs with its ground attacks. But for Little Mac, his aerial attacks struggle to KO anyone until they're flirting with sudden death damage levels.

Long been my biggest deterrent from trying out Mac, and even moreso me feeling Sakurai mainly built the take on him in SSB4 solely from his Brawl Assist Trophy-counterpart, right down to being a "gruff boxer. Which reminds me, he's a bit too grump in Smash (why no joyful celebration like in both NES and Wii upon victory?)

At least Hewdraw Remix allowed him bit more interesting leniency in a way you talked about - this time aerials allowing better setups to grounded attacks and then some. :dkmelee:

On that end about Punchout, I've long been baffled by how inexplicably generic the presentation of the series has been, even moreso in Ultimate than in SSB4 - which is mainly due none of the other boxers from the series being featured anywhere (not even as an Assist Trophy?), complementing sadly with how Mac's level can be also be turned to a more generic "Smash Bros-verse" boxing ring.

Combined with my above feelings on Mac, it makes the current representation of Punchout feel incredibly lacking and disconnected from the known main draws of the series - arguably the boxers themselves you take on as the little guy and just the oozing personality from EVERYONE involved in the series. Smash not bringing much of this has made me not really be invested on the series there as much as I am outside of it. Kinda of a shame as I remember championing for Mac some bit on the side during SSB4's speculation era.

Also Doc Louis not getting any pep talk sessions on fighters... what a missed opportunity. (It wouldn't have been that hard, especially if it's just one guy talking briefly!)

I suppose one reason for the lack of Punch-Out!! representation outside of Spirits in Ultimate has to do with the negative stereotypes that are affiliated with the boxers in question. That alone can likely explain why the Wii version of Punch-Out!! has yet to get a Nintendo Switch port.

I'd hate that to be the case as both Nintendo and Retro Studios had ton of fun with stereotypes based on their countries (Japan and Canada respectively) - and even then, went all the way to get native speakers to voice their lines in Wii and make their portrayals more charming and flattering than anything else... but you'd be possibly right.

Though now I can't help having a hunch that with the amount of content brought to Smash over the years since SSB4, there's bound to be something politically incorrect having slipped in anyway.

I guess to me the very idea of boxers in Punchout Wii specifically still eliciting this reaction to be viewed as politically incorrect in spite of all the work done to lessen so feels... worrisome? Especially in the context of the game which pretty removed from reality in both the presentation and the boxing itsel. Even then, I feel like with cases of Street Fighter existing that have come to evolve country-based characters over the years, would show Nintendo how to go about continuing Punchout instead canning the series completely to unforeseaable future due these concerns...

Doubt it, those stereotypes exist in the NES version and to be honest, even more egregiously in Super Punch Out and those games have no problems being brought over in Virtual Console and NSO. Punch-Out Wii was released on Wii U Virtual Console as well. Evidently, porting Wii games over to Switch is a significant enough effort to warrant full-priced releases and the reason Punch-Out hasn't happened is likely the same reason why a dozen other games haven't.

As for additional Punch-Out representation, those characters existing as spirits at all kind of conflicts with the point about negative stereotypes. Several of them were trophies in Smash 4 as well. I can't tell you why there isn't a Punch-Out Assist Trophy, but surely even among the apparently controversial cast of boxers there are enough that do not hinge on stereotypes that would be perfectly fine AT additions. Bald Bull, Super Macho Man, Mr. Sandman, Disco Kid... all of those are pretty light on any pointed stereotyping.

Nintendo is not above playing to stereotypes in the first place. Their mascot is an Italian caricature, Odyssey had characters in big sombreros playing mariachi, the ARMS character we got in Smash is a Chinese girl with ramen noodle arms. And past those goofier examples Zelda has a fairly consistent, eyebrow-raising portrayal of middle eastern culture. None of these are that much better than what Punch-Out is putting down, not enough to intentionally gate off an appearance by Glass Joe, Don Flamenco or Aran Ryan.

Frankly I've almost never seen people complain about Punch-Out's boxers in general, it seems like more of a paranoia based in the progressively evolving (and just to make my stance clear, positive) social and cultural awareness. I'm open to having the conversation with anyone who does have a problem with it, but Punch-Out Wii makes it evident to me that a lot of care was put into portraying these characters as respectfully as possible. I'd go as far to say that up until Splatoon, Punch-Out had the most positive and inclusive portrayals of black characters in Nintendo's catalog, period.

And people like to paint it as "the racist Nintendo game". It's just really tiring to see people continually misunderstand the series in this way, and it's never even anyone actually offended by it doing so. Just people who like to speculate on how offended people are.

Incidentally, wasn't there a little commotion a couple weeks back about someone interviewing a Punch-Out!! developer and they said there probably wasn't going to be another game because of the stereotypes? And then that rumor was later debunked, and the real reason was that there wasn't a good gameplay hook?

Speaking of Punch Out, you know how quite a few people say "Give Ganondorf a new moveset and give the old one to Black Shadow?" I'd genuinely like that idea for Little Mac and giving the current moveset to Glass Joe, maybe even give him the headgear from Wii, it's funny cause of course he'd be terrible but the idea that he just tries so hard that his hits can actually pack a punch is pretty fun to me and feels like a perfect win win

The notion that you should "only play as characters you like" is really dumb. I don't play Marth because I like the character, but I also don't play Marth because he's high-tier in Melee, I play Marth because well... sword functions are fun. That's it. I will pick up a character I like just for liking them every now and then, but I consider that more a novelty.

Plus, I think - like a lot of common Smash takes - it's a bit hypocritical when you look the common consensus of roster speculation. most-wanted character discussion is WAY more based on what is meta/optimised and gatekeepy to "well, I like that character, that's it" mentality than even competitive Melee lmao.

Playing a character cause you find them fun is playing as a character you like

I only play characters that feel good to play. I like smooth and floaty. Ness, Bowser, Peach, Toon Link, K. Rool. I know special attachments might play a key role.

I absolute loathe complex and janky characters and consider this function a disease to Smash. I like simple and cozy. Mario isn't fun to play anymore. C Falcon isn't fun to play anymore. Fox isn't fun to play anymore. I want Smash to do a call back to its bumpy approach like in the 99 commercial.

If a non-video game character were added to Smash, Doraemon is a SERIOUSLY underrated candidate. I would probably consider him the most likely character in such a scenario. Nintendo’s partnership with CoroCoro Comic (the magazine that was basically created just for Doraemon at first) is one of the longest in video game history since they published their manga for about 35 years now. It’s a big part of Nintendo’s history people don’t really know about in America.

I can understand the argument he might not be popular in the west (and I do think the fan demand for Goku makes him pretty likely, especially because Dragon Ball games have a long history with Nintendo) but Doraemon is still massively recognizable and his games get localized now which makes me feel it wouldn’t be an issue.

Questioning my existence while asleep
My take;
If it weren't for the limitation on non-video game content, the Godzilla IP would absolutely have something by now, even if just a Mii Costume for Brawler in a Godzilla suit and the iconic theme for "Other" stages.

It'd likely be one of the easiest licenses for Nintendo to negotiate for compared to the global licensing nightmare of manga/anime series and Toho puts Godzilla in goddamn everything these days so they'd probably leap at the opportunity.

I think WarioWare needs more representation, not less. Namely, it really really needs another character.

I think for as much as it does have, the WarioWare representation really isn't all that good. The Gamer stage is fun and unique, but the base Ware stage has been the same since Brawl (there should have been a "WarioWare 2" with more Microgames by now), and we STILL only have Wario as the playable rep.
Wario by himself doesn't, and can't, properly represent WarioWare as a series because with JUST Wario, there's the Mario spinoffs and Wario Land casting a shadow over Ware since that's what's on everyone's minds, and Wario, at his core, is a Mario character. WarioWare's own identity isn't really being represented within the actual character roster because the character chosen to represent it has all this baggage. Like, think about it, no one even uses the Biker outfit.

As someone who is a fan of both Ware and Land, I am sick to death of the constant dumping on WarioWare in the Smash fandom, with people going so far as to say any and all Ware references should be entirely removed in favor of only Wario Land representation. I get it, Wario Land hasn't been a thing for a long time, and besides a few moves in Wario's kit, and one song, it really doesn't have much in Smash, but tearing down WarioWare isn't going to bring Wario Land back. It just means Wario is going to become a Mario series character and we don't get any Wario at all.

I think a one of the original WarioWare characters would really help set the series and its identity apart, the same way getting King K Rool finally helped spilt Donkey Kong Country's representation into its own thing instead of just being an extension of Mario, and would let there be a WarioWare character without the baggage of Wario Land attached.

Personally I've wanted Ashley for years, but at this point I'd take anyone as long as WarioWare can shake off the shackles of "not being Wario Land" in a Smash game.

One idea I've had for a while in terms of a second WarioWare like stage (as in a second stage with the mechanics of WarioWare inc.) is Penny's Lab from GiT. It could have more micro games from that game too. Probably wouldn't be chosen now that GiT isn't the most recent WarioWare game but I think it could be cool.

I doubt they would prioritize Move It getting a stage over GiT when the former potentially came out too late (if you buy the Apr. 2022 project being Smash) and the latter would probably be one of the easiest things they could adapt into a Smash stage considering the original WarioWare stage pretty much was GiT's gimmick before that game was even a twinkle in anyone's eye.
Though I was more thinking the Wario Bug would be the ideal stage since you could combine the original WarioWare stage gimmick with the titular Wario Bug occasionally attacking players as a direct stage hazard like in the source game.

I've been seeing a lot of YouTube videos talking about how they think a Smash reboot would go. But I think a major problem with them is that they don't treat it as a proper reboot but rather just another Smash game. What I mean is that they just remove a bunch of characters from Ultimate's roster and add some newcomers. Is it really a reboot if the we handle the roster in such a way? A reboot would imply a fresh start so if if they did reboot the series I'd rather people clear the board and start from there.

Also I don't think a Smash reboot should do what the last game did roster wise. IMO it should either be a "back to the basics" kind of roster where it's primarily Nintendo characters with only 2-3 guests if they fit with Nintendo's cat like Sonic or Banjo. Or go all in on the "Gaming All-Star" factor where we only have a small handful of Nintendo reps as guests would be a primary focus. Nintendo would still have the most reps as it is their franchise but I'd say they'd only take up about 10 or 15 out of a 50 character roster.

Doing the same thing as Ultimate or Smash 4 would only scare people off as many would ask "Why would I pay for a smaller roster than before" doing something so different might justify a purchase for some.

Sort of like what I think they're going to do with the next Mario Kart. I don't think they're going to bring back the transformations or gravity function. I think it's going to be a "back to basics" where it's just karts and bikes.

For me there's a certain charm to Wolf's jerky animations in Brawl that basically went away in Ultimate. Particularly miss his old dash attack, nair and forward Smash even if they're better in a practical sense.
Wolf's Brawl n-air goes hard. They should have kept it, and then had him outstrech his claws to turn it into a full circular claw scratch. Much better than a generic sex kick

Personally I think it's a shame that they got rid of his animalistic body language. Outside of his shoulder guard clipping through his head when he crouches, it wasn't really janky.

That said, I also think it's easier to appreciate Wolf being a hodgepodge of pre-existing animations when you realize they would've had to not only repurpose punches and kicks, but also sword slashes. Ever noticed how he uses his left hand for his down smash? That's because the animation was taken from Link's.

Brawl Wolf's up smash is taken from Sonic's up air but that's obvious. It was changed in Ultimate to be different. PM has a different up smash altogether.

Sonic is also already a character that has moves from other characters such as forward air being based on Falco's forward air. Ironically both characters would get different fairs in PM and by extension most mods as a result.

Waluigi is fine as an AT rather than a fighter. He's a supporting character in the Mario spin-offs, and doesn't really offer much else. He's popular, no doubt about it, but a moveset based solely on Party, Tennis, Golf, etc. seems a bit lacking to me. That's why I consider him the perfect representative of the ATs, an eternally popular supporting character but nothing more.

If Waluigi had his own game, or appeared in Wario Land/Ware or Luigi's Mansion as a main character, he'd easily earn the pass to fighter.
Thinking about it; a Luigi's Mansion 4 with Luigi and Daisy as protagonists, and Waluigi and King Boo as antagonists would be pretty cool.

Most Waluigi fans don't want a Waluigi moveset based on the actual games, they moreso want something based on Waluigi's personality - either as a spectacular, extravagant, flamboyant character; or based on the general tropes of the old school Saturday morning cartoon villain with traps and creatures. I used to be pretty deep into Waluigi speculation and "Waluigi hits people with a racket" or "Waluigi revs up a kart" were generally not liked ideas. Imagine him less as "the guy from Mario Kart" and more "legally distinct Michael Jackson" or "legally distinct Wile E. Coyote" and it'll probably come together a lot better.

Sorry, but a moveset based on 2/3 animations and memes sounds really boring indeed. He doesn't represent any major franchise, he doesn't have his own spin off, he doesn't have any appearances in any main game. He's the definition of a supporting character, and having a supporting role like AT in Smash suits him wonderfully.

That's pretty much how I feel. TBH I also feel like if Waluigi could be easily made into some sort of clone character, he'd probably be playable by now.

Daisy, in a lot of ways, is the female equivalent to Waluigi (though funny enough that's kinda beginning to change with Nintendo promoting her more and more), but her main saving grace is that she's just effectively orange Peach and thus can be made into a very quick and easy echo fighter with minimal development time. Waluigi obviously can't be an easy clone of Luigi or Wario the same way of because of his unique body type, but it's questionable if they view him as worth the full blown playable effort for all of the reasons you've stated.

That's the thing, the ideal Waluigi moveset wouldn't be based on anything. It'd be generic tropes that happen to fit the character based on what we know, which is really how all movesets should be done.

He doesn't represent any major franchise, he doesn't have his own spin off, he doesn't have any appearances in any main game. He's the definition of a supporting character, and having a supporting role like AT in Smash suits him wonderfully.
I mean, those aren't really things that apply to the diegetic text of Smash. They don't matter in Smash's own vacuum, where the only thing that should really matter is that Waluigi could get a fun moveset, ideally the nature of the character's presence in the source material, popularity of the source material, or even popularity of the character should - with some fringe exceptions - be secondary to the character themselves if even a factor (even if it unfortunately clearly isn't - you can't get people excited for a Pixar-quality CGI cutscene announcing Mad Jack... god damn I hate trailers)

Not to mention that Waluigi is in Mario Kart, and that is basically capital-T The biggest Nintendo franchise, much bigger than the platformers.

- I don’t mind new fire emblem reps (as long as they’re not clones of existing ones)

- I’d be fine if the next entry cut all 3rd party characters

- I thought melee’s adventure mode was better than subspace emissary

- I’d take majora’s mask over skull kid as a character

For a future Adventure mode unique spin, I'm sold a free roam feature could be impressive. Not massively but small-ish pocket spaces of Mushroom Kingdom, Dreamland etc that fights are triggered.

Since I mentioned MK earlier... Mario Kart is SEVERELY underrepped in Smash, both from a "what's most iconic" perspective and in terms of the potential it gives for content, it might be the worst-off first party series in both regards. I can understand why a playable kart driver hasn't happened yet, and item rep is plentiful, but in terms of stages, music, even trophies/spirits, it feels like there's a big vacuum of Mario Kart content, and a mentality that it's "just a spin-off", when it should be standing toe to toe if not higher than the platformers both from Smash's "relevance/popularity matters" logic and my personal "scavenger hunt" logic. Flagman Lakitu is a Rambi-tier obvious Assist Trophy.

Related, but I'd really like to see Yoshi/DK/Wario content from Mario games in Smash. DK Summit would be an awesome stage especially. I guess Waluigi, as a whole, technically counts as this and he's practically a lock for next game, sooooo...

I don't believe Mario Kart is underrepresented but Mario Party certainly is. Mario Kart has several stages and way more presence compared to Mario Party.
I'm with you in thinking Mario Party is underrepresented but I don't think it's fair to compare it to Kart

Kart is a once per system event series like smash itself. Party is kinda nintendo's answer to just dance or call of duty on a more reasonable scale.

Kart & Party aren't equal subseries
