I'm dead serious, I want to know. I don't care if you flame me, it's an honest question.

Everyone else is a Nintendo character, theres only two 3rd parties and there they are. Sometimes outsiders add more spice and anticipation. Snake was meant to be in the last game, and Sonic is like Mario's rival, so if we add them think of how much anticipation and spice will come from the game.

Maybe because they ran out of characters? I mean some characters are already very obscure such as Lucas or ROB. And I know that you are all now saying "blah blah blah Geno, blah blah blah Ridley, blah blah blah Krystal". But unless you are a super harcore Nintendo fan, those charachters do not have nowhere near the appeal that Snake or Sonic do..

Sonic was like Mario's Biggest rival. And im sure everybody has been thought the "Mario's could kick Sonic's *** in a fight" and vice versa. I mean everybody wanted to see "Mario vs. Sonic" at some point. As for snake, yeah, He was supposed to be in Melee, but it was too late.

Well, when I saw Snake it kinda annoyed me. I've never been a fan of Metal Gear Solid personally. Nevertheless, his moveset is fairly good and interesting. Sonic, for his part, has been in quite a few games for Nintendo systems. These include Sonic Adventure DX and Sonic Adventure 2: Battle, Sonic and the Secret Rings, several portable games, Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games, etc.

The over-arching reason why these characters were added is because Sakurai wanted to appeal to more people in my opinion. I still would have preferred Phoenix Wright over Snake though. >.>

But no, don't do that or you'll corrupt the game, and it won't be Nintendo anymore.
But that's not the point of Smash Bros.

Yes it's a Nintendo game. Yes the series have always been a celebration of all things Nintendo. But the meat and potatoes of Smash has always been the gameplay.
So why not add in some more third party characters? If they fit in and were well balanced, why not?

Well, one answer to your question, leeray, is that I think part of Super Smash Bros.' purpose is to promote Nintendo characters. People find favorite characters in Smash and want to play the games where those characters are from. For instance, the inclusion of Roy and Marth renewed gamers' interest in those games. Nintendo didn't capitalize on that though...I think.

Beyond that, I had never even heard of Samus Aran before Smash 64. I swear. o_0

Ever since Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games came to the Wii, it's certain that Sonic might be entering the Brawl.

I was surprised about Solid Snake though, because every one of his games tend to be M rated.

Ness was my unknown character for SSB64. I have a hunch that the only reason he was included is because Earthbound was developed by HAL Laboratory along with Kirby. Even though, I'm glad he was because it [re]introduced a less-known series and two great, unique characters to the Smash Bros. series.

I don't have much intelligence on that Ace Attorney, but what kind of moveset could Phoenix Wright, a lawyer, possibly have?

Thats Easy. He'd have:

"OBJECTION!!"
"TAKE THAT!!"
"HOLD IT"

his forward smash would be him pointing his finger, obviously =Þ

Funny you should say that, because I was just thinking of posting one for him in that moves thread. Could take awhile to come up with stuff though. I admit it would be somewhat hard, but Phoenix Wright is known for batsh*t theatrics, awesome comebacks, and...OBJECTIONS!

The two were added because it makes the game appeal to a wider audience. But they were also added b/c this game is about the greatest characters ever in video games come in one game and fight. This now includes greats from companies other than nintendo.

I know it was imposssible (d*mn you microsoft and rare,,,,, >.<), but I wanted Banjo Kazzoie as a third party character. He would have fit great. And though he is not a nintendo character, he would have been awesome.

So in short it doesn't matter if they are nintendo or not per se. What matters is how well they fit into brawl.

Characters like Lucas, R.O.B., Lucario, Wolf, and Toon Link seem to tell me that they're actually running out of ideas for characters.

However, characters like Pit, Wario, Pokemon Trainer, Diddy Kong, Meta Knight, Snake, Dedede, and Olimar, seem to tell me that they have plenty of ideas for characters.

They confuse me...

[sacrasm]Nintendo and Play Station parcially own Sega and put the Sonic series on both consoles. Sooner or later, the Sonic series will fall, and Microsoft will be laughing their heads off.[/sarcasm]

There is a Sonic The Hedgehog on the 360...

Oh wait, just noticed the 'sarcasm'. I dont know what that is in reference to but w/e

Anyway, if Sonic and Snake were not in the game, some obscure unheard-of characters would be. I dont care if theyre third-party, some of the best Smash Bros candidates are third-party.

I mean if they werent in, who would be? I know there are a few other contenders like Geno, Micaiah, Krystal etc, but theyre nowhere near as big and popular as Sonic and Snake. But knowing Nintendo, if Sonic and Snake werent in theyd just put a few characters who have been in 1 game noone has heard of in. Or even worse, theyd put more clones in.

Yes, theyre not Nintendo, but theyre far bigger, better and more popular than any Nintendo character (who is not currently in the game) you could find.

Well it could be used in this way, yes. A way of promoting the game franchises from where these characters originated. However, I am absolutely certain that this was not the reason for these being included in the first place, infact having the game based on Nintendo characters was actually a last minute thought. Originally the first Smash was to use new and original characters.
I still maintain that it would do no damage to add more from third parties, It would still be a Nintendo game, everyone would know it was a Nintendo game, but it would also expand the audience for this title as there are those in this world that really aren't fussed by the characters that Nintendo produce. Plus I believe it would make the game more interesting...

... Now we have Sonic vs Mario...

... But wouldn't it be good to have Megaman vs Simon Belmont vs Zero vs Leon Kennedy?

I didn't know that (about the first game possibly using original characters). One thing I will say, though, is that smash bros. has definitely evolved to the point where the games help promote other games in a way.

I agree though with what you're saying about third parties.

Shock effect, experimentation, branching out. There's a lot of moral to the story I suppose, but I personally would have liked to see two nintendo characters instead of Sonic and Snake. Would have really made it Nintendo for me
