EGM: How about online with the Revolutio's how will it work? Will it be more like Xbox Live? Or more similar to how the DS is now, where you get a friend code that's different for every game and you exchange that like a phone number to find each other online?

RF: I would think [it'll be similar to the DS]. Again, that's been part of our [plan] in creating an environment that is more friend and peer-to-peer based, versus simply, I wanna go take on everybody for certain types of games.
It's more like Friend codes.

Well, Friend Codes are probably just a feature. Despite what that says, there'll probably be an option like there is in MKDS to do a random search for other players, maybe even in a particular type of mode. Maybe you can even make your own matches. Whatever. Either way, I'm thinking that when you're in the lobby for the particular game (and this is just SSBR I'm theorizing about), there'll probably be some type of option to add people in the lobby to your Friend Code list.

OK guys, I think this could be big. So I was watching TV like a minute ago and what do I see? A vaccum cleaner commercial- blah blah new fibers blah versatile blah- but the I saw the name- the Bissel REVOLUTION. That would mean Bissel has copyright on the Revolution name. Think about it.

Shinigami, there is a difference between what you think the Revs online should be like than what Nintendo is saying it's going to be like. I want the service to be different but that's not what they are saying so far.

I don't have a problem paying for online. If it means better service I would gladly pay for it.

Cashed beat me to it...

Well, Chill, if you would, tell me exactly how what I say contradicts what Reggie has said. I'm not even saying this to be an *** or to be arrogant, I genuinely want to know so I can build a theory around that. I never really get things the first time I read them anyway. :p

I can tell you, it's not big. You can't copyright a product name, you can only trademark it. And even then you can't just trademark a word so that there can never be another product that uses that word. So since vacuum cleaners have nothing to do with video games, Bissel can't do anything if Nintendo wants to call their next console Revolution.

About the online experience: price shouldn't matter. It's not a matter of the limited free experience vs. the premium pay experience, because Nintendo isn't offering a pay service. It's a matter of how everyone is going to be experiencing online play with Nintendo's products, and the limits Nintendo has put on the DS have been pretty arbitrary (as you might expect if they just wanted you to upgrade and start paying). I really don't think they set a limit on your friend code list in AC because it would have cost them so much more to let you store 5 more names, or that you can't have more control over your MKDS races because of the programming costs it would entail. It's a matter of the vision. Right now it's kind of, "Nintendo WiFi Connection: now available over the Internet!" and that's it.

Course, it's not like I actually have a DS or anything, but from what I've heard I'm hoping for more when it comes to Revolution.

Here we have Reggie saying the service will be similar to what is currently being offered on the DS because they want it to be 'friend to friend.'

Your theory was that despite what he is saying you think we'll be able to go to lobbys, and FC will be optional. Nothing even remotely like that is offered at this time. I would love to be wrong but things aren't looking good. You also need to consider that Nintendo wants to keep this free so we'll probably only ever get a bare bones online service. Basically, at this time who knows more about the online service Reggie or you?

No, you misunderstood me on the lobby thing. I said I was figuring that SSBR would be like MKDS in the sense that it would search randomly for opponents, and then there would be a lobby while the game itself loaded up, which would be where all the players would be hanging out for a bit. I was thinking, maybe the username AND Friend Codes would all be there for the adding if you liked the person. It would serve as both a pre and post-game lobby, ala Halo 2. And what you say about my knowledge compared to Reggie is right, I'm only theorizing and coming up with ideas for what I'd like. I didn't think I was saying it as though I actually knew about it, but if I was, I apologize for it. Again, only ideas for what I, and probably most, would like to see, given the limited experience Nintendo has had with online gaming. Trying to look towards the future of Revolution while at least being a bit realistic.

Well that's really all I was saying. We(myself included) have things that we want to be in the online modes, it was just to me what he said made it sound like the only way to get friend codes (and thus the only way to play online with someone) would be the same as what we have now.

If your lucky in AC you can get the FC of someone you don't know but there is no way to see if this person has any kind of negative rankings or anything like that. I know it's just a DS but his wording made it sound like things won't change much beyond what we have now.

Oh, one more thing. I did misunderstand you on the lobby idea and I think what you described would be very good idea. Even though it's not exactly want I would want, as it still limits you to the random search (imagine if half of the players who bough SSBM went online, that's alot of people to randomly search through) it would certainly be a step up.

At any rate, you shouldn't complain over the Nintendo WFC connection not being Xbox Live because the Nintendo WFC is free. I heartily agree that Nintendo should make all future games that feature the added dimension with better setups and more options than what MKDS has to offer, however.
Not to mention, MKDS wasn't intended to have online from conception, as Mic's pointed out dozens of times. Also, I can see how the dev teams wouldn't lavish as much time on the online facets of a handheld, because traditionally handhelds have always been meant more for things like car trips, at least not to the casual gamer. For something like a home console, to me it really only makes sense that the online play would have more time and attention taken in creating it. I think what Kirby King said, "It's a matter of the vision. Right now it's kind of, 'Nintendo WiFi Connection: now available over the Internet!' and that's it," pretty much hits the nail on the head. I wouldn't put it past Nin to even use MKDS as a testing ground for different forms of online setups. I haven't played ACWW, though, or even known when they planned for it to have online play, so I don't know what kind of problems you could see from that.

Well, I do. If I have to pay, then don't count on seeing me in the lobby or playing against me. But fortunately, that's not really Nin's mo.

Hello? ANyone in there? Not all of us HAVE the cash in the first place.

I'm a student, and do a lot of extra-cirricaular stuff, so I don't have time for a job. I don't play everquest or WoW, cuz I CAN'T pay for it.
Even if I could, my parents would not let me spend money on an online service.

SOme of us do noit have the option of paying for an online service, so don't act like we're horrible people because we want a free service.

Well, PS2 and Xbox are different in terms of online, cowwa. Xbox Live, in order to play games online, has to be paid for in advance yearly but covers all and any game you wanna play online. PS2 online on the other hand has the creators of the game decide whether or not to have you pay. In essense, you could be playing like 5 games online on the PS2 and be paying nothing while playing 5 games online with Xbox Live and paying (what is it now..?) $50 per year. On the other hand, you could be playing 5 PS2 games online and be paying an assload of money per year, so in general the PS2 online setup is a bit like the Revolution's in that respect. Nintendo isn't having one universal online serve but rather is having the creators of the games use their own online service through the Revolution. So, while some first party titles like SSBR may be free to play online, there may be an online third party title that could cost like $100 per year. Unlikely, yes, impossible, no. So you may or may not be getting what you are or aren't paying for.

Maybe there will be some kind of text chat room, or an index of friend codes, so you can keep track of people. Or maybe you can mark someone as a friend, or send them a message asking for the digits.

Well, Iwata will be giving a keynote at the upcoming Game Developer's Conference next month, so maybe we'll get some answers then.

Related article.

Also, I read that the guy who's at the head of the Nintendo WFC will be saying something, but whether or not it'll be a brief mentioning during Iwata's speech or one of his own is beyond me.

The related article has been updated and no longer makes any mention of the other guy, but trust me - it did.

I don't know why it was taken down, unless they wanted his speech to be a surprise. It didn't give away anything on the Revolution. It just said he'd be talking about the same thing he's been talking about for the last three years or so.

Yeah, and last year while talking about the same old thing announced the virtual console and showed a New trailer for Twilight Princess.

That's not my point. My point was that what they posted on the GDC website was nothing that would make them say... "wait! take it down, take it down!" because it's the same thing you'll see in the average nintendo press release.

for further clarification, his ACTUAL SPEECH and the SUMMARY ABOUT WHAT HIS SPEECH WILL ENTAIL are two diff. things. The latter was posted on the website and taken down, and I don't quite get why.

Yea...odd...

All I can say is that I REALLY hope the Revolution's Wi-Fi is NOT as limited as the DS's right now. I would be really annoyed. I mean, if SSB3 is still fun, I'll still enjoy it, just like I do with MK:DS, but I would be much more disappointed with it. I would be willing to pay for a good online service. I don't think it's likely there will be, like, some 'premium online,' or something, though.

Nintendo also needs to remember that they need to get Twilight Princess out the door soon, too. They'll probably be annoying and wait until E3 for it to release, too, instead of releasing it in April.
All I can say on that is that Twilight Princess has a HUGE rep to live up to.
If they release it just bfore E3, it might get drowned out by all the E3 business. They could also use E3 as another place to show it off. -_-; So who knows?

This game has been one of the most anticipated for what, two years? When this game releases it's going to be impossible to miss.

Well it is suppose to get better... go to Nintendo.com and look for one of the NOA's beta test of Metroid Hunters coming out next month.... He does talk about the WiFi lobby being better then that of the MKDS's....

Friend codes could be a headache but maybe Nintendo will use them as away to save somone as a buddy... sorta like a buddy list...

On a totally unrelated note, at E3, when (or if) Nintendo announces all the final stuff for the Rev, such as the real name, games and a bunch of info we've discussed throughout this huge topic, would you guys mind a new thread? This one has 38 pages (I'm on 40 posts per page) of speculation and not a whole lot of information... a new topic with all the final information seems like it'd be easier to navigate and when all the new guys come into the Light House after seeing Nintendo's E3 stuff they'll be able to get all the concrete information.

Found some leaked images on the Rev (from behind) and Controller prototypes (Is the blue one a doorstop?)

The slot on the far left of the console is probably power, dunno what the other could be for.

Well, I wouldn't call them leaked seeing as the're from a booklet that is being sold.

Those colors looked really nice when shown all glossy but now the green is more of a vomit color and the red is dull. I'm stickin with white or black.

Regarding a new topic, can't they just click the first page to see all confirmed info? If more people feel it's nessescary give them what they want I suppose.

EDIT: Oh, how could I miss the l337 slot !?

It's not being sold, nor is it public. It's probably a draft/final copy of a booklet to be released at E3.

Yes, please. A new thread would definitely be save time and energy, particularly my own. I would be using this thread, had I been kept up from the beginning, but there's just too much know-nothing speculation and digression for me to bother with.

Um...A picture from a magazine of some sort with random plastic pieces...

I don't really get much from that, but, hey. :p
I just hope the real Rev.'s colors are more metallic than that, like they've been showing.

Still debating between white or black, but I'll want a red controller.

And yea, it'd probably be good to start a new thread when info gets out. That way there'll be no speculation--at least, not any pre-E3 speculation.

Those cases might not have the glossy layer applied that the E3 ones did. For all you know, it might be the angle of the lighting causing there to be less glare on the surface of the cases.

has anyone else noticed that one page says 2007 in really large characters?(anyone who can read chinese or japanese that is).

i know the Rev. is supposed to be out before thanksgiving, but this doesn't appeal to me. I'm assuming since Rev is launching near the end of 2006 they're focusing on 2007.

and the 1337 slot is probably for an SD card/ USB.
