Honestly, i think Ultimate Deluxe is looking unlikely after this. I dunno, i think i'm not longer on team "Ult Deluxe is more likely than Smash 6" anymore.
I feel like today was the best day to anounce the Deluxe version, Ult Deluxe feels like a no-brainer Year 1/Christmas port to drive sales, but they didn't anounce it, i'm not feeling Deluxe anymore.
My guess is that Smash 6 is in development, but in the shadows, possibly Team S was doing the full development with Sakurai supervising when Kirby Air Ride was in full development, i think right now, Sakurai is probably working in Smash 6 as well, as Kirby Air Ride is probably in the lter stages of development.

The lack of a price is weird, but then again, maybe the economy is in play.

I can see a Summer Direct happening. The lack of anything beyond July is strange. Would be a good time to announce Animal Crossing or something.

In terms of Switch 2 Editions, what Switch 1 games are primed for such a thing? I’m thinking at least Xenoblade 2 coming alongside a new epilogue story, or maybe Pikmin 4? Stuff like Smash Ultimate, Splatoon 3, or Mario Maker 2 could go either way.

The inevitable Mario 40th Anniversary Direct later this year would be the time to announce a lot of Mario stuff.

I do think a new Smash could come within the next two years, if there is no Smash Ultimate NS2 Edition.

For GCN Classics, I can see Mario Kart Double Dash getting in during the Mario 40th Anniversary Direct.
Echoes of Wisdom With Zelda Maker and Link Mode!
I need a zelda maker and more link im starving over here!

Nintendo released this backward compatability page on their website.

The lists of games that aren't compatible are... interesting to say the least.
So from this it looks like no Nintendo games have any issues except for Nintendo LABO Toy-Con 04: VR Kit because the Switch is bigger. For 3rd parties, it's a bit of a crapshoot.

There's also a couple of Joy-Con centric games that don't recognize Joy-Con 2 inputs.

In other news, the Smash Bros Twitter account retweeted today’s direct.

Last tweet was in 2023.

I'm pretty dead set now on us having to live with SSBU for little longer though, especially if we'll see a Switch 2 Edition for it. Might become a Mario Kart 8 DX-kinda deal.

Honestly though, I kinda prefer it this way, I was already feeling bit mixed on the implied idea of Smash coming in again through Kirby on the front... thank goodness Sakurai gets to work on something much smaller and freeform instead.

yeah, i think i'm tired of winning.

There was a problem fetching the tweet
No offense, but i don't see how you're "winning".
Sakurai could've easily started development of Smash 6 in 2023/2024 after a full year of KAR's development (asuming it started in April 2022), specially if Team S is in the picture, Sakurai can definitely just supervise Smash 6 while he's workin on Kirby Air Riders.

Honestly? I think assuming Studio S was built for Super Smash Bros., I think that leads more credence to it being Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Nintendo Switch Edition, since a whole new title would take much of Sakurai's attention. If it were just an enhanced port, it'd be much more believable for Sakurai to work on it simultaneously with Kirby Air Riders.

Given that, it's likely that we are just getting a port, or Sakurai is not at the helm of the next game. Or Studio S isn't making Smash. One of the three.
I mean given the active development of Sakurai's projects tend to be two years and change, and Air Ride started in 2022, that would land the next Smash in 2027-ish, which is a year later than most thought but still pretty plausible, especially if 3D Mario and Gen X are indeed next year.

Super freaking excited for the new Mario Kart. Expecially since the new open world design hasn't gotten rid of retro tracks.

Also, COOOOOOWW!!!

I found that to be distinctly underwhelming.

Mario Kart looks amazing and voice chat is a FINALLY type of thing and seems well-implemented.

Was surprised how little they demonstrated the mouse controls and didn't think the wheelchair basketball game was that interesting of a new IP to showcase this - it seems like Rocket League but a decade late and with mouse controls.

The Switch 2 Edition stuff is my biggest disappointment - I thought we finally got out of this muck of Deluxe rereleases with the Wii U being 2 generations behind.

The third-party ports section went on way too long.

FromSoftware exclusive IP is kind of exciting.

Donkey Kong...I don't even know what to think of it yet. It feels bizarre - the gameplay ideas seem fun but I feel like the heart and soul of DK are the characters and setting, and not seeing a single secondary Kong is weird. Him being a prospector is weird - did they just say "minecarts? Yeah, I guess he's a miner"? I dunno. Add a mid-stream technical hiccup that felt like a bad omen and...eh.

They still have my money because I'm a fool but this was weak imo.

I was really hoping to see Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Switch 2 Edition on the stream at some point. But with Sakurai's next game being Kirby Air Riders, that might be some ways off if that actually happens.

Though either way, I'll still be on the look out.

Were there no WarioWare characters (not including Wario himself) in the Mario Kart trailer? Honestly would be kinda surprised if none showed up. Odd that one of the most noteworthy Mario spin-off series doesn't really get much rep in big Mario games imo.

Yeah, 2027 seems pausible. Smash 4 was released 2 years after WiiU's launch after all.
I think this time around, however, Sakurai might have started Smash development before Kirby Air Rider's launch, my guess around 2024. I think with the increasing development times, i don't think they'll wait for KAR's to end, like they did for KIU.

I mean there weren't any DK characters besides DK, and we've even gotten them before.

I have a feeling maybe we'll get Diddy but most will show up as DLC. :/

As for WarioWare characters, yeah that'd be great, but... good luck.

I think it could have been, and I love that wheelchair basketball is a game like this, but the game's presentation is super boring.
