So there was a user called almightyFaceplant on r/smashbros who had serious doubts on a new Smash releasing for the Nintendo Switch 2. Mostly because while Sakurai was working on a new project in 2022, Sakurai also said he didn't know anything about a new Smash game being developed in a different "Creating Games" video.

I guess almightyFaceplant was right, the project plan was not Smash 6. (Honestly I should've brought this up ages ago but maybe that was already discussed at one point).
Some guy doubting the project plan was for Smash isn't particularly newsworthy imo. There were people here who also suggested it wasn't - that just doesn't really lend to any further conversation, so it was mostly entertained as if it was.

DK's design is so good and expressive. I love how much it derives from his Arcade design.

...There's no way they can stick with the animal voices anymore in Smash. It's GOTTA change next game.... right?
Yeah, it'll change.
We'll get Seth Rogen to reprise the role. Or at least a cheaper soundalike.

I was impressed with today's Nintendo Direct and I'm glad that the Nintendo Switch 2, Donkey Kong Bananza and some other games were revealed. I'm a bit disappointed that they didn't reveal Super Smash Bros. 6, but I know like everyone else that there will definitely be a reveal day at some point, besides there are only two months left until the Nintendo Switch 2 is released and maybe when it does it will show something about Super Smash Bros. 6 although of course this is just a theory.

I'd also like to echo the people who are shocked that that Switch 2 tutorial "game" isn't free. I mean... I wasn't planning on playing it before, but now that's definitely out of the question.

The general game pricing is surprising not because I didn't think it'd get there, but I didn't think they'd make the jump so sudden. However, I get it, even if I don't like it; it's setting the precedent now instead of like halfway through the gen. I think continually climbing costs are inevitable.

But obv it's just going to make myself and others more selective about which games we ultimately get. Like, it'd be nice to have some of those third-parties on Switch 2. But if I already own them... nah.

I'm going to be flamed for this opinion, but honestly guys i'm not feeling the Switch 2 so far, i think i'm going to jump Sony's boat this christmas and buy a PS5 instead.
Mario Kart World looks nice, but it's not exactly what i personally want from a Mario Kart game, i'm glad Nintendo is trying something new, but i'm just not convinced by it. I don't know what happened but the hype has died after watching the direct for me.
There's several PS5 games i want to play like 2XKO, SF6, Tekken 8, FF16, Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart, Kingdom Hearts 4, Dragon Quest XII...etc, yes i know some of those games will be on the Switch 2, but PS5 will probably be the better version, anyway and there's no really a Switch 2 game that's a must buy yet for me.
I hope you guys enjoy the Switch 2, but i think i'm going to Sony's road for the next years, i will still stick around here, though.

Yeah, I'm Team Port all the way.

Rather have Ultimate Deluxe with all the DLC + Extra Characters or even Modes for 60-70 than a new game with significantly less for ******* 90.

Plus it's fits better with Sakurai's schedule to have Air Riders this year and then Ultimate Deluxe at 2026-27
I'm sure Nintendo is equally excited to throw that $80 away for the millions and millions who can just upgrade for 20.

PS5 has the exact same problems as Switch 2, even moreso some cases, siginificantly worse library and even more expensive. Despite its issues, Switch 2 frankly made the other consoles obsolete. Power disparity isn't big anymore for a worthy difference like the first Switch

If you are that uneasy, why not just build a PC or even buy a deck

I think after seeing the Switch 2 Direct, I can see my ideal timeline.

Ultimate gets a Switch 2 patch with new content.

But the Switch 2 also gets an exclusive new Smash game. One that reboots the series as a 3D platform fighter.

It's not exactly likely but the way I see it, This way we get to continue what is the pinnacle of current 2D Smash while also getting the fresh reboot fans claim they want.

What are your thoughts?

To be honest, I'd hate to see a 3D instead of 2.5-D Smash game. I don't especially like this trend of making every franchise more and more 3D and/or open-world (depending on the game). With Smash in particular, though, I don't think it'd feel like Smash anymore to me.

Also, with Gamecube NSO, it almost certainly doesn't mean anything, but I find it very interesting that alongside Wind Waker, F-Zero GX, Mario Sunshine, Pokemon Colosseum and XD Gale of Darkness, Fire Emblem Path of Radiance, Luigi's Mansion, Mario Strikers, and Soul Calibur 2 with Link in it, Chibi-Robo is just kinda vibing with the big guys in that list lol

Very excited to finally get to play Chibi-Robo, just find it interesting that it's the only real smaller scale game in the list with all the Marios, a Zelda, two Pokemon games, and a Fire Emblem lol

Is it me, or is the Switch 2 being expensive a repeat of the Wii U? I ask because I do not see it doing well.

In fact, I see this as almost a PS3 launch scenario. Almost.
With inflation, the PS3 would now cost ~$750/900 at launch depending on the SKU. It's not that bad.

Idk, 450 to me still seemed within the plausible scenario, albeit on the higher end, unfortunately. It's more the game price that surprises me.

And I don't think the Wii U was overpriced, it just had a litany of other problems.

I'm not super enthused on the idea of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate: Nintendo Switch 2 Edition. I mean, for me (and probably all of us), it's probably only going to cost $20, which is nice, but I'm not sure there will be a whole lot of new here. We do still have that Studio S team, which, if they actually are working on Smash, would mean that we're still working with a pretty old project plan, so no Pikmin 4, Xenoblade Chronicles 3, or anything recent like that, and I'm not really sure what they'd add other than characters and stages. World of Light expansion? That's just more of the same.

I feel like it would just be Smash, but with more stuff that's kinda eh, and new fighters: Sans, Ring & Ring Fit Trainee, Bandana Waddle Dee, and...I dunno Funky Kong as an Echo Fighter.
Wasn't Studio S fully formed in 2024? Even if we go by when they started recruiting that still would put the plan at 2023 at the earliest I'd imagine, which would include XC3, Pikmin 4, and the like.

I feel bad about it but I’m actually pretty disappointed overall. Like I was really expecting some bigger reveals from Nintendo, That would actually make it feel like a new era.
I’m disappointed that the C button is just Chat and not something more interesting like Miiverse. Other consoles have had chat for a long time, This isn’t exiting it’s just Nintendo catching up to the pack. They hyped the C button up way too much.
UI in general seems to be exactly the same from the little we’ve seen which is super disappointing to me.
Donkey Kong Bananza looks good I guess, But as the closest thing to 3D Mario, It just does not seem to hold a candle to how unique and exciting Odyssey was.
Third Party support is good but again it just feels like Nintendo catching up to the pack to me, Like I’m glad we’re getting stuff like Final Fantasy VII Remake and Street Fighter VI on Nintendo but this feels like it only benefits people who are really loyal to Nintendo. Those are both on PS4 and that’s going to be a lot cheaper to get.
And those prices. Oh my god. I’ll get the console and Mario Kart when it comes out hopefully but honestly I feel like I’m not going to get any more games for this thing until 3D Mario and Smash eventually. 70 and 80 are just out of my budget. I mean, I could have understood 70 but 80 is just ridiculous.
Kirby Air Riders looks cool.
I hope we get more info or games that get me a bit more excited in the future but right now I kind of feel like we’re just going through the motions rather than being at the start of a new era.

I really hope Nintendo's gonna be pushed on a 3DS-esque situation where they go reduce the price of Switch 2 later because yeah, even to me the console's bit hard sell right now on the launch. But sadder though how I don't see 80 dollar games go lower either however...

I'm worried that they might literally not be able to even if they wanted to, because of reasons that go against the "no politics"-related rules.

Personally, The console itself is great and I knew it would more pricey than people guessed. It's games pricing that bugs me. Guess certain games like Mario Kart will more pricey than others but still. I was expecting 70, not 90.

Still though:
Mario Kart Worlds
Kirby Air Riders
Donkey Kong Bananaza
Metroid Prime 4
Xenoblade X
Drag Drivers
Age of Imprisonment
Pokemon Legends Z-A

This year is packed. I'll probably just buy Donkey Kong and Air Riders and the rest will be Switch 1 games.

so it wasn't smash after all. well at least we'll finally get a stage from a modern kirby game

so then some thoughts

some interesting new features but I'm not sure I'll get much use our of them
updates for switch 1 games is a nice idea but paying for them seems scummy. at least a couple of them get us new things so it's more like dlc
GC games?! YES!!!!!!!!
Mario Kart World looks amazing
Donkey Kong Bananza looks like it'll be a right blast
Age of Imprisonment will probably be fun but I'm a bit disappointed as this is just what they did last time
Welcome Tour looks kinda borning
Drag x Drive looks curious but I don't like sports
Kirby Air Riders looks cool
nice to hear from Silksong
might give Street Fighter 6 a go
it is great so see Bravely Default making a come back

I'm personally just way more interested in the PS5 catalogue than the Switch 2 one, "worse library" is subjective, after all.
I'll be honest, Smash was a big draw to buy Nintendo consoles after the Wii for me, a switch 2 version of ultimate doesn't really interest me personally. at least not enough to buy the Switch 2, i'm personally not a fan of playing the exact same game for 10+ years, i'm glad some of you guys will be happy with it, but i just personally i'm not very interested in it. I feel like there will be eventually a few games that i'm interested in that aren't in PS5, but like, probably not any time soon.
For now, i'm buying a PS5, maybe in the future i buy a Switch 2, but i'm just not very interested on it atm.

Thinking about how Kirby AirRiders may have serious implications for Bandana Dee's Smash odds depending on if he shows up in the game in any meaningful way
I've talked with folks saying that Sakurai directing the game will mean nothing from games he hadn't directed like in Smash - which'd imply we'll see just Meta and Dedede playable at best alongside multicolor Kirbies as before.

I'm not really feeling on that personally as it'd make Kirby Air Riders feel way too disconnected from Modern Kirby, especially his fans - and it'd be a massive missed opportunity on letting us have a whole new Kirby Air Ride with a roster reminiscent of Kirby Star Allies's Quest Stars.

I wanna play as Adeleine, dammit...

Say, do you all think a Direct will happen in June? I am not expecting Smash news then, but just curious.
Most likely, the summer Direct is basically Nintendo's replacement for E3, and I feel like a number of first party offerings might be there considering it would happen right after Switch 2's launch.

I am glad with this bit that at least you can just buy the Upgrade Pack by itself if you already own the game, physical or digital. Might get the one for Forgotten Land since it adds a new story to the game.

Plus games with no new features like ARMS, Mario Odyssey, and Scarlet/Violet get performance boosts for free.

Something else to chew on is that there being a new Sakurai Kirby game means he has more content he can continue disregarding most of the series with. Not only that, but it'll be a recent game too.

We'll get to see which Kirby game actually gets more content: the one that finally evolved the series in 3D platforming and became the best selling in the series, or a Sakurai-made spin-off, lol.

Bad example then, except I meant that I could see the Switch 2 would flop like the Wii U. That is what I meant.

I don't think 450 is so extreme as to make it flop or garner a 3DS-esque price reduction (as nice as the latter would be) given it seems pretty strong in other respects. It's an enticing gimmick, a strong brand, and it seems to have pretty great support.

Well, to be fair, I did not say 450 in cash is so extreme either.

…I was just worried and just expressing it. I am open to take corrections, though.

The highs from today are settling down and while I am still unbelievably hyped for Mario Kart World and Bananza, I am very worried with how Nintendo is getting cocky with their pricing.

Going straight from 60 dollar games to 80 dollar games is very greedy and anti-consumer, and the accessory prices aren't much better:

1743611901688.png

Now I see why the prices weren't mentioned in the Direct at all.

Someone needs to knock these guys back down to reality, what on earth are they thinking??

So, another day that ends in "y" then?

I'm not part of the "Sakurai secretly hates modern Kirby" club, but he definitely prioritizes his own work. I think it's more likely for modern Kirby to actually be there (in some capacity anyway), but I also wouldn't be surprised if he sticks to his old guns as closely as possible and makes it feel like it crawled out of the early 2000s with any new content being original to this new title.

I’d like to inform everyone of some of the confirmed retro tracks for Mario Kart World.
  • SNES Mario Circuit 3
  • SNES/N64 Koopa Troopa Beach (it’s hard to tell)
  • DS Desert Hills
  • DS DK Pass
  • DS Airship Fortress
  • Wii Toad’s Factory
  • 3DS Shy Guy Bazaar
  • 3DS Wario’s Shipyard
Fitting that they're all courses missing from MK8D.

NS/Tour Sky-High Sundae
Speaking of rail grinding!

I think I’d would prefer a Ultimate Deluxe/Switch2 Edition over a new game. Mainly cause I fear the next game would have a lot of character cuts.
Me too obviously. But I should clarify, that's only if leads to more Fighters Passes.

If it's just improved performance/Sw2 functionality, then I don't care.

For the switch2 edition have some new stages, items, and new skins (dry bowser, new dk look, etc) and then like two new fighter passes.
3 6-Fighter passes! Get us to Fighter #100!

Yeah, Fun's over. $90 games
You guys think Switch 2 will have Vouchers?

So the existence of a Switch 2 Edition Ultimate would either be to usurp the role of an actual new, better-selling Smash, even though one could probably be ready shortly after it, or to just exist, briefly, before being replaced, which renders it... superfluous.
I think people who want a Deluxe Port want to dimiss any posibility of Smash 6 happening, instead of considering that both options could happen.
I think if a S2E comes out, and gets more Fighters, it means no Smash 6 on Sw2. It's basically MK8D+BCP at that point.

But if it doesn't get new Fighters, then it's probably just an interim release before Smash 6. As for that, being superfluous? No moreso than any of the other S2Es. Improved performance/Sw2 functionality is not superfluous, just less exciting.

If that is the retail price for physical games for the Switch 2, then I may as well stick to purchasing games at a second hand gaming store at this stage.
Which won't work if they're download code carts.

I'm sure Nintendo is equally excited to throw that $80 away for the millions and millions who can just upgrade for 20.
$20 from 35 million people that already own Ultimate might be more than $80 from only the people who are willing to pay $80.

But the Switch 2 also gets an exclusive new Smash game. One that reboots the series as a 3D platform fighter.

What are your thoughts?

If there's a new smash game i do wonder if Sakurai will take clues of some elements of Kirby Air Riders, Sakurai has taken various elements from his previous games and put them into Smash in some way, example: Challenges, the classic mode dificulty system...etc.

Probably - though I hope he supplants it enough with new concepts, worlds and ideas to help make that feel fresh... I guess it still feels odd that Sakurai directing a Kirby-game and anything from Modern Kirby needs to keep being so mutually exclusive.

Wouldn't be surprised at all if some fans could start criticizing his choices as borderline egotistical and disrespectful to Kirby's current creatives if it gets this far outside of Smash, where it's not as big issue in grand scheme of things.

That image is exclusively referring to Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom and only if you already have the NSO Expansion Pack. Sorta like how the Expansion Pack also lets you play Octo Expansion and the Animal Crossing DLC for free.

Another section says you can buy Upgrade Packs separately if you have the original game, purchaseable from the eShop, the online storefront, or select retailers.

Oh, alright - my mistake.

I guess I hope Upgrade Packs just aren't gonna cost over extra - closest I'm feeling now is them going for 20$ at highest for an upgrade.
