Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

Then the odds are literally 50/50 with no damn way to determine which of the two is "more likely".

Seriously. Stop trying to make these statistically impossible what-if scenarios to prove a point. They don't work.
I'm just saying I think typing MIGHT factor in, even if it is a minuscule amount. I don't get why you have to act like your belief is without question 100% fact even when you don't have any real proof. If you think it sounds dumb or nonsensical that's fine, but that's not proof.

Also I only brought up typing because of what Sakurai said about wanting new Pokémon to better "fit in with the rest of everything else". I thought that their typing and evolutionary status might factor into what he was saying there. Sakurai adding Squirtle, Ivysaur and Charizard and saying he liked having balance with the stages of evolution might have also had something to do with that, though I know that's a different situation. I even said I might be misinterpreting what he was saying and asked if you had a better interpretation, but you didn't really give one so... :ohwell:

First, that is totally wrong. Cloud was very controversial because he has no relation to Nintendo (most everyone I talked to noted it was controversial when it was announced). This was a huge complaint about the character. He was never complained about for being strong. The biggest sore spot characters for being good were Bayo and Rosa. For reference, there had never been a poll that had Sheik high for being strong. If you think people are complaining only about these characters for being strong, you're kidding yourself.

Second, we don't actually know who won the ballot because results were never given. You have this nice big asterisk saying "realizable" a term with no definition. Bayo was also only top in Europe, the smallest region and I don't think she ranked in US. The results are questionable given these facts.

There are people who are upset about any cut, but Snake was expected. I think this whole "Everyone misses Snake," only happened after the game came out. Most everyone expected him to go because he didn't fit in.

I said years ago there was a diminishing return with guest characters, and I think its starting to sink in. Just some quick points

Cloud and Bayo were popular, yes, but the issue is that there was just as much dissatisfaction, moreso I would argue for Bayo. Back when characters like Megaman and Pac-Man were being added, there was little to no backlash (Heck, even a fuddy-duddy like me was fine with Pac-Man). But the thing is we are seeing negative responses to the new characters. This wasn't the case before.

The other people is "Who do you add." I argued on Source Gaming that a big reason for the bulk of guest characters as DLC was due to them being more interesting and may be an easier swallow for 5 bucks. The problem is that they have kind of gone all out and there is nothing left. Think about this: what character could you add after adding Cloud? You added a character no one could have thought possible. At this point, there isn't much place left to go. "But what about Shovel Knight." It's too late. You jumped the shark. You can't really top yourself now. Guest characters are one part marketing but you will never get something as interesting as "Cloud is in Smash." This is why Bayo was met with more negativity then other guest characters. At this point, there is no where left to go but down.

Interesting. Thanks for posting that. I haven't kept up with Pokemon since last year and I don't watch shows. I don't have a dog in the fight so it doesn't matter to me either way. I know Sun and Moon will get something since it sold so well. Decidueye made sense as it was an evolution, it has synergy with Greninja and Charizard and its easy to see what it could do. It also has the Z Move.

You claim I'm basing my article on this one poll but I wrote like 6 or 7 paragraphs. If you want to attack my argument, look at the whole thing. Not one snippet.

The whole "They were voted because people consider them broken" isn't true. The only characters this applies to is Rosa and Bayo and that's more how they win. Sheik, ZSS and Diddy were never as high. Also keep in mind these two were the highest alongside Corrin. Also, Corrin was considered a strong character but he wasn't disliked because he was strong? Kind of moving the goal post.

First, holy hell man, PICK A COLOR THAT ISN'T RED. I've been gone for two years and you people haven't figured out that red is hard to see on black? Golden's post are fine because he uses yellow. Please, stop using colors that are hard to read for pete sake.

The only thing I want to say is I always find it funny people try to redefine what Smash is. The first two game didn't have guest characters. Despite people like me complaining, there are have been over 50 Nintendo characters in Smash and there have only been 7 guest characters. The game is never going to be "Video Game Icons," because most of the cast are Nintendo characters and a lot of them are pretty obscure (most people didn't know who Shulk was, for instance). This idea that Smash is about "icons" is ludicious given the shear number of Nintendo characters and the legal impossibility of it being about icons. And this is the crux of my argument. Smash is about Nintendo All Stars. It shouldn't be redefined. You can have guest but they way there are done now wont work going forward.
"Cloud was very controversial" Says who? Sure, there was backlash, but EVERY character in the goddamn game gets backlash from a vocal minority, Cloud was no exception, especially considering how Final Fantasy in a very popular franchise and Cloud being one of the most popular characters FROM said franchise. If they had Cecil, Terra or Bartz instead, would you still whine? Cloud got in because of fan demand for a Final Fantasy character, Cloud was the most popular choice in the ballot when it came to Final Fantasy characters. Simple as that
"If you think people are complaining about these characters being strong, you're kidding yourselfs" MMMMM I absolutely ADORE how you say people want them cut, don't say how many people you asked nor how many people agreed with you and claim this. Oh, and Sheik and Diddy were VERY disliked early in Smash 4. And LOADS of people groaned at Meta Knight's return before it was confirmed he'd be rebalanced. Cut him then too

"We don't know who won the ballot! MUH RESULTS" Have you SEEN how toxic this fandom is? Not showing the results was good, as otherwise, if someone suggests a character you don't like, you could go "NOBODY WANTS THAT TRASH YOU MORON LOOK AT THE BALLOT RESULTS" and knowing the fanbase, lots of people would do that
"Results are questionable" Considering how you're implying the ballot was rigged, I think you have lost the right to be taken seriously when mentioning the ballot now

"People only complained about Snake being cut after the game was released"
Gee. It's ALMOST like it wasn't confirmed he'd be cut until AFTER the game was released!

"Third Party characters are only going to go downhill from now"
This isn't entirely false, there aren't many super iconic characters left to add for Smash, but that's not a reason to cut them. Otherwise we should cut some Zelda characters, no major characters left to add there, so why bother keeping them?

"Bayonetta got backlash because she was after Cloud as he couldn't be topped"
This only proves that cutting Cloud isn't a good idea, as Bayonetta was surprising for being unexpected from the hardcore fandom, due to her being niche there. And again, toxic fanbase whines about anything they can whine about
"I wrote 6/7 articles about it, read it all!" You ALSO wrote (or spread, can't remember) an article explaining that Shovel Knight is actually a bad game and people were being tricked into liking it when voting for Shovel Knight was a bandwagon.

"I find it funny people are trying to redefine Smash" Nintendo dropped the "Nintendo all stars" thing a LONG time ago pal, and they stopped having Smash be about Nintendo's all star cast when they made Melee, as again, Roy debuted in Melee. Therefore Roy singlehandedly proves you wrong despite being in a game before guest characters appeared
Before I begin, I want to say I really like this comment. This is the kind of discussion I want. Kudos to you.

You have a good point, but where I disagree with that I think you are looking in a theoretical sense rather than what is actually going on. I'll summarize why
  • Unlike Brawl and Smash 4, there is no one popular guest character
  • Nintendo is producing more IPs than they have in the past. Since Splatoon, Pikmin was the last IP which featured characters and worlds. Nintendo has made other IPs, but they were usually like Wii Sports or the Touch Generation games. Nintendo is also making ARMS and will probably have more IPs at E3 given how they are talking (speculation on my part).
  • With guest characters, we could be reaching negative utility. Although some have claimed the "character I want to be cut" for Cloud and Bayo are due to them being good, the same wasn't true of other good characters besides Bayo. There was still plenty of controversies when the characters were announced

On the guest character, I think its fair to say that not all guest are created equally. Snake was a character we expected to be cut, and most people didn't seem to mind (it's only after he's gone that fans actually say "What, we love Snake now"). It's not a surprise that Sonic and Megaman were the most popular characters. Megaman has only been successful on Nintendo systems and Sonic games sell the best on Nintendo systems. This also explains why Cloud was controversial. He's doesn't have the same connection as Megaman and Sonic do.

You mention too many Nintendo series being niche and unsuccessful, but let's look at the third party series. First, Sakurai is Japanese and is a big name in that country. He doesn't speak English, so there is a barrier to working with western companies (and he wants to communicate with the creators). Regardless, most western third party games don't do that well on Nintendo system. Outside of Overwatch, there doesn't seem to be a lot of overlap for Nintendo fans and most western series (but feel free to disagree). So let's focus on Japan for now.

Tekken isn't very popular on Nintendo systems and the series is on the decline. Dragon Quest is unpopular in America. YokaiWatch is VERY unpopular in America. Bomberman games don't sell that well. Most of Sega's series are in the ditch as are Konami's. The only Japanese series that does well worldwide and is popular with Nintendo fans seems to be Monster Hunter. So in terms of picking the best character, there's not a lot here. And again, after doing Cloud, these characters character going to be people excited. Moreover, there are only so many mega iconic characters out there.

But also consider your audience. You mention that there would be diminishing returns for Nintendo characters, and that is true of new characters regardless. The jump from 12 to 25 was bigger than 35 to 55. But if the thought is Nintendo will run out of characters, I direct you to Blizzard's all star game, Heroes of the Storm. The game has more characters than Smash (60+) from only 4 series. Nintendo has a plethora of series to use. "But these characters are obscure." Not to your target audience. The fans of Smash Bros know Nintendo. This is why people aren't usually upset over new characters unless they are a clone or if there is too much from on series. Conversely, we have seen fans be upset if the guest character doesn't fit the mold.

Perhaps you could argue my suggestions too extreme. OK. Take one guest character from the last two games and add one more. Make them feel special and different. This is another way to reach the same goal.

I will say that in terms an ONLY Nintendo game, you have to remember that Nintendo is the point of Smash Bros. Akuma isn't symbolic of Tekken. Predator isn't symbolic of Mortal Kombat. You mention there won't be a Nintendo character as big as Sonic or Cloud, but there also isn't a guest character that would be as big as Cloud or Sonic. Those days are gone. If there isn't a new guest character fans can get excited over, does it need to continue? I would argue no. Again, the point of Smash is Nintendo, so moving in that direction can never be moving backward. You are never moving away from makes Smash, Smash.
"There is no popular guest character" Almost like speculation is over until a new game is announced. Not to mention Cloud got in due to popularity despite seemingly no demand for him. Did YOU see Bayonetta, Ryu or Cloud requests? No? Then that means you're either not looking in the right places or those people aren't speaking up due to people like you acting like this about third party characters

"there were still plenty of controversies" Actually. Y'know what, I want you to get a LARGE amount of people who still complain about the third party characters being in solely for being third party. At this point you're pulling it out your ass. Not to mention Doctor Mario got controversy, Roy got controversy, Ganondorf got controversy, Meta Knight got controversy, Rosalina got controversy, etc.
"People only now are saying they like Snake"
You're ****ting me. I remember a SIGNIFICANT amount of people here wanting Snake to return. Expecting a character to be cut =/= wanting a character to be cut. I expect Inklings to be added in Smash. However, I do NOT want them in Smash. Oh, and Cloud was a Final Fantasy character. Final Fantasy was ALL about Nintendo back in the day
"Tekken is on decline" I haven't been keeping up with Tekken but people are VERY excited for Tekken 7. Especially it's Guest character
"Dragon Quest isn't popular in America"
You said "Let's focus on Japan"
"Bomberman doesn't sell well!"
You haven't seen the sales for Super Bomberman R, have you? It's also gotten patched up to fix criticisms people had and more people are interested due to this

"these characters character going to be people excited" lmao

"Consider your audience"
You don't get business. Nintendo ALREADY panders to their fanbase. Look at the sheer quantity of characters, items, stages, music tracks and more that are solely Nintendo based. That's more than enough

"Heroes of the Storm"
That's a game made exclusively by Blizzard and completely different than Smash. Not to mention focusing on die hard Nintendo fans loses the casual audience. New, casual fans won't care about the new Excitebike character, they don't know him, and if you focus solely on the die hard fans, you alienate the casual fans, which Sakurai has been very vocal against.

"Akuma isn't symbolic of Tekken, etc." That's true. However, you REALLY don't get guest characters. A guest character draws in new fans. If Akuma wasn't in Tekken but rather, a different Tekken character, hype would be SIGNIFICANTLY lower. Not that the other character isn't popular, but it's goddamn Akuma. Guest characters draw in people who otherwise wouldn't care for the game. Having a character pandering to Nintendo fans instead of a third party character doesn't draw more people in to the next Smash.

"You're never moving away from what makes Smash Smash". Adding third party characters isn't moving away from it either. Here's a comparison. Apple pie typically has apples and cinnamon. That makes apple pie what it is. But what if you were eating an apple pie and there's some cranberries or raisins in it there are nice. Sure, it's different from the one you used to know, but you're still eating apple pie and are enjoying said apple pie

I think third parties have reached a point of decline after Pac-Man if you think about it.
Before the DLC Third Party Wave, there was a certain consensus on who the next third party character should be, first that was Sonic, then Mega Man, and after that Pac-Man (Pac-Man only being disputed because people underestimated Sakurai's power to make a character feel right)

When you ask people about third parties?
"Ray-Man, I guess."
There is no heavy hitter left aside from "Ray-Man, I guess"

This causes Sakurai to pick surprising stuff to keep up the hype.
We saw it with WFT before, but he went for the most surprising third party characters for the sake of surprise.
And that's dangerous, because while Ryu was hauled with praise, a wrong pick can sour the roster for many, like Corn and Mayo did.

Tl;dr The level of iconicness Sonic/Mega Man/Pac-Man (Maybe Ryu and Cloud) bring cannot be replicated so I hope there are no more third party characters from now on.

I don't get the viewpoint that we shouldn't have more third parties just because we can't replicate the impact (or iconicness) of Sonic or Cloud all the time.

Uh no **** we can't? And no that's not a valid reason to not include more third parties either. Third Party Characters should get in on their own merit, not on whether or not they can "top/replicate" Sonic because then we wouldn't have gotten any of the third party characters that we got in Smash 4.

a wrong pick can sour the roster for many, like Corn and Mayo did.
- Wrong Pick
- Ballot Winner

Pick one because a bunch of overgrown babies throwing their toys out of the pram because their horse didn't win doesn't make Bayonetta a "wrong pick"

The ballot character was always going to cause people to be upset because so many people set themselves up for disappointment because they convinced themselves that, based on their echo chamber, their character was the most popular.

Your guess is as good as mine
I'd say that a few more 3rd Party reps wouldn't be too bad, but only if they have a distinct connection to Nintendo's legacy and fit right into the whimsical style of Smash.
Besides the series that are already in the game (Sonic, Street Fighter, Final Fantasy, and so on), fighters from Ray-Man, Viewtiful Joe, Puyo Puyo, NiGHTS, and Dragon Quest are just a few series that I can think of off the top of my head that could work and would fit. Shantae and Shovel Knight too though with less chance.
The focus of the roster should most definitely be Ninty characters themselves, but 3rd Party reps should be allowed to pop up here and there, especially if they've got good potential and have popped up in Nintendo's history themselves.
I wonder how long this looping argument over 3rd party reps is gonna continue.

Who thinks there is a chance that Alph comes back as it's own character? And do you think that's a good idea?

People can debate third-parties until they're blue in the face, but we're not going to stop getting them. They're on average the characters that draw the most attention to the series nowadays, and make up a large portion of the most desired additions (despite what some people think - I mean Bayonetta was the highest on the ballot of "realizable" characters... how many of those "unrealizable" characters do you think belonged to Nintendo?). Saying Nintendo fans don't want third-parties is taking a very selective and myopic sample to use.

Just because the pedigree of the remaining third-party candidates is inferior (for the most part) to the ones already on the roster doesn't mean Nintendo is going to forego adding more. The benefits still outweigh the negatives. The Nintendo purists who give a damn are in the ever-diminishing minority when compared to groups such as the competitive gamer who cares more about the gameplay, the fans of the third-party series who like to see their characters included, the people who now see Smash as a culmination of gaming icons, or by far the largest contingent: the people who don't ****ing care about roster specifics and just want to have fun playing the game. So... "consider your audience". That is the audience. It's a melting pot of gamers, and most of them would rather see a character like Cloud over one like Shulk anyway, because they know who Cloud is. What do they care if Bayonetta is owned by Sega? It's an audience Nintendo thought providing standalone third-party content would be a wise, lucrative move. And it was. That's the audience. It's far and away more than the guy who pines for an exclusionary roster. Anyone who thinks otherwise is projecting their bubble onto a multi-million-strong audience.

I agree the further we go with third-parties the more we venture into the land of the diminishing return, but that won't stop us from going there. The return may diminish but still merits proceeding. This isn't a subjective statement... I don't really care if we get more third-parties. We got the one I wanted most and the other (Banjo) isn't going to happen. I'd be perfectly happy if from here on out we only got Nintendo characters. But, as already stated, there's more to be gained from third-party inclusion, especially since, with an exception here and there, we've long since been in the land of diminishing returns when it comes to Nintendo characters. The likes of Rosalina and Bowser Jr aren't exactly on par with Peach and Bowser. And we're only going to go further down that hole as we go; the occasional Inkling won't stop that.

I'm not invalidating the desires of the Nintendo purist, I can understand why they would want the third-parties to be reduced or removed, but serving them sees all the other camps disproportionately marginalized. More over, if the Nintendo purists were the largest contingent... the reception to the third-parties would've been such that they wouldn't have added nearly as many as they have; most people like the "guests". I'm sure the DLC sales breakdown would also reflect that.

Some other random nonsense that has been said:
  • Pac-Man only got popular due to Namco's involvement. His popularity wasn't exactly organic, as it's being presented. People seem to forget this. It's not quite the same as Sonic or Mega Man.
  • People were not expecting Snake to be cut until the very end. Nearly everyone either thought a) he'd be back along with Sonic or b) neither would be back. Saying otherwise is some severe revisionist history.
  • The Nintendo All-Stars argument is tired and I don't think Nintendo even uses it anymore. And even if they do, they aren't lying. Nintendo's all-stars are present. But many others are as well. Even aside from third-parties, characters like Greninja, Sheik, Dark Pit, Jigglypuff, Corrin, etc. aren't Nintendo all-stars let's be real.
  • The argument about third-parties flooding the roster is also nonsense. Maybe for DLC, but we have six third-party characters on a roster of nearly sixty. If 1:5 is a flood I'd hate to think what 5:1 is, because that's basically the ratio of Nintendo characters to non-Nintendo characters.
  • At this point it almost seems worthwhile to create a character popularity poll because everyone is talking out of their ass about Gen VII popularity with few metrics to prove it and it's tiresome.
  • You lot defending Cloud's inclusion would never be doing this three or four years ago. It's demoralizing to see how y'all warp to whatever direction Smash veers in. If I'm being honest, it cheapens words to know they'll extol and reflect any decisions found on the roster. Because this happens in ****ing droves.
  • I think people are conflating negative reception towards a character's competitive viability or lack thereof with the desire to see them expunged from the series. People didn't want Meta-Knight gone, they wanted him nerfed. People didn't want Mewtwo gone, they wanted him buffed. Not to mention the competitive viability of the character is something only a tiny fraction of Smash's audience even trifles with. This, again, is bubble speak.
  • People disagreeing with the "one popular guest character" that stands above the rest are wrong. There is no Sonic/Mega Man equivalent going forward. But that doesn't mean there aren't still fine choices for third-parties. However, if he keeps getting games, by Smash 5 proper it could maybe be Bomberman.
  • Already been said, but people get mad generally because a character isn't someone rather than for who they are. This is especially the case at the end of the roster and certainly the case for Bayonetta. While some were upset over Bayonetta herself (I've never been taken with the character), many were irked that months of ballot speculation had lead to a single addition they didn't even truly expect. It's the ROB effect. After Ryu and Cloud it's not like people weren't fully anticipating the possibility of another third-party. And anticipation usually leads to acceptance around here.
  • Cloud was a controversial addition, possibly the most controversial addition since Snake, don't bury your head in the sand.
  • Master Chief and Shovel Knight are both pretty cool guys. Except when they're girls. Then they're pretty cool girls.

With Super Bomberman R as a launch title, and a title which will get an update every now and then, I consider Bomberman to be an extremely likely third party character.

I've said before that it wouldn't surprise me if Bomberman is next in line from Konami if Snake returns, but I fail to see how a launch title makes him that likely.

Part of me just feels that even if there were more legal-like stages, the competitive community would still downsize it to just Battlefield, Final Destination, and Smashville...
Sometimes you have to wonder if people tend to avoid the Omega form stages, simply because they're mostly Final Destination copycats. Not every Omega form stage operates exactly like Final Destination as there can be some geography differences that keep players from going underneath the battlefield.

Used to be a fan of debate towards 3rd Parties as a hole, but over time, I've just gotten tired of it. It usually just goes back and forth, devolving into poor reasoning and petty/childish insults. That's why I don't chime in for anything other than the occasional 'like' on a post if it presents something with substance.

I am game for discussing individual characters, though, 3rd Party or not. Might as well contribute to the Bomberman topic. Bomberman is in an interesting position. I'd say he's perhaps the 2nd most likely Konami character, but that isn't saying much. Yes, he has a launch title on Switch and a decently sized fanbase, however, I can't really judge on the latter without knowing how well Bomberman did in the ballot. He's also got Snake to compete with if Konami as a whole is pinged for a character, though that's assuming Sakurai goes for the company, rather than a particular character.

Personally, I'm pretty neutral when it comes to Bomberman. I've never played one of his games, although he looks like he'd fit in Smash well. As long as he's in without too many other 3rd Party characters, I wouldn't mind him one bit.

I just want Snake, Bomberman, and Simon Belmont in Smash 5.

It would be so amazing to see a trailer that makes us think Konami made a new Dream Mix TV World Fighters game and then Mario, Link, and Kirby unexpectedly show up... and it turns out it's actually a Smash trailer all along.

That and I also want Pit, Mega Man, and Simon Belmont together again for the first time.

I was one of the few that beleived Sonic was the only "safe" one between the two.
Not that I was outright expecting Snake be to be cut, but I didn't see Sonic returning as proof Snake was as well like damn near everyone else did.

I know exactly what you mean. Believe me. :4duckhunt:
This sort of thing happens a lot not only in Smash but in other fighters. Usually all it takes is a gameplay trailer for a good chunk of people to have their opinions sway to a more positive light.

Snake and Bomberman are fine but if Konami somehow got three reps I'd want the third one to be Goemon.

When you ask people about third parties?
"Ray-Man, I guess."
There is no heavy hitter left aside from "Ray-Man, I guess"

Tl;dr The level of iconicness Sonic/Mega Man/Pac-Man (Maybe Ryu and Cloud) bring cannot be replicated so I hope there are no more third party characters from now on.
Absolute nonsense. Rayman is not at all a "heavy hitter" of gaming, in the world of gaming he's third rate at best. There's an uncountable selection of third party superstars they could pick to be in the game that are all way more popular and would surprise a massive amount of people.

Banjo, Conker, Crash, Spyro, Bomberman, Geno, Simon Belmont, Snake, Zero, Ryu Hayabusa, Sora, hell, even secondary third party choices like Dr. Eggman and Sephiroth... you're really gonna sit here and tell me that Rayman is the only iconic and exciting choice left and would be way more surprising than all those choices? I don't mean to be rude, but you're seriously out of your mind if you think that.

That and I also want Pit, Mega Man, and Simon Belmont together again for the first time.
Konami allowing that for Smash would lessen their crap reputation. That's a cool idea. Snake, Bomberman, and Simon Belmont are characters who'll do the trick.

Perhaps we could let a Captain N reference to slip in a "codec" style conversation or a trophy description?

Heck, I wish I could write some trophy descriptions.

This sort of thing happens a lot not only in Smash but in other fighters. Usually all it takes is a gameplay trailer for a good chunk of people to have their opinions sway to a more positive light.
Yeah, pretty much this. What characters need is visual aid and Sakurai's support in order to get fan support.

It's like my description of Duck Hunt Dog wasn't good enough. They needed to see a gameplay trailer illustrating exactly what I had described for years so they can support Duck Hunt Dog.

Also, when I said Duck Hunt sold more games than Wild Gunman and Hogan's Alley since it was bundled with the NES so that's why I chose Duck Hunt Dog to represent the NES Zapper games, people weren't convinced it was a good enough reason to justify Duck Hunt Dog's inclusion. But when Sakurai pretty much said the same thing, people swallow it up and say Duck Hunt Dog totally deserved to be in Smash.

Seeing a lot of these point is somewhat odd to me sometimes. Perhaps I just happened to be in the right spots of the internet, but I'd see decent, not a lot, but decent support for characters like DH or Cloud. No one thought it would ever happen, but most weren't opposed to the idea. There were of course one or two on either side who were either very vocal about why "x" would be awful and the end of Smash or had convinced themselves that "x" needed to/was going to happen. Again, it's just anecdotal stuff from my experience, but with these sort of things, I'd usually see neutral/interested but skeptical responses. But again, my own experience can't really show anything.

Everyone argues about why "x" or "y" was supported/hated by "most people", but anything that anyone can ever really bring is up is just going to be anecdotal. No one can gauge what the entirety of Smash's audience generally favors, if any general consensus can even be reached given how vast an audience it is.

I think, it'd be safe to say that most of us here at least are tired of going back and forth on this subject though. Doesn't help that I responded, but I wanted to chime in with that before dropping it myself.

On to the subject of Konami characters. Any combination of Snake, Simon, and Bomberman would be my personal picks. Castlevania along with Ninja Gaiden are two classic series that I'll always stand behind. Given their legacy and ties to Nintendo, I think both have decent merit for being Smash material.

Who thinks there is a chance that Alph comes back as it's own character? And do you think that's a good idea?
Yh i think its a reasonably good idea.

I feel like I don't see pikmin fight enough so 1 more character with pikmin playable should increase that. And there really isn't any other viable option movesetwise so a clone makes sense. Semi-clone preferably but last minute is fine too.

More captains as costumes too, please.

To be honest, I would be very happy with Captain N in Smash. He's the most Nintendo-centric character who didn't originate in video games. I wonder... does Nintendo own the rights to the Captain N original characters like Captain N and Princess Lana? If Nintendo owns the rights to Captain N, then he has a chance of getting in Smash. Limits are meant to be broken.

I will accept Captain N/Captain Nintendo only if the character is in the style of the original Nintendo Power story and not the stupid cartoon adaptation. (As in, Kevin Keene can suck a ****; Brett Randalls or bust)

I'd rather not have Captain N or Nester but that's just me. I know who they are, but I didn't grow up with NP or the show (both ran before I was born), so I've never really gotten the appeal. Then there's the possible ineligibility on top of that.

Oh my god don't even get me started lol.

"Did you know Marth had a super secret best friend that we never mentioned until now? Someone more dear to him than anyone else, even his own wife? Did you know that it was you?!?"

And the show, which is literally a self-insert into some *******-ized realm of all the game worlds, doesn't?

Both seem like bad fanfics to me tbh. Clearly there's something there though, I know some people like Andre from GameXplain absolutely love the guy, but I just don't see the appeal. Not trying to rag on him or his fans either btw, everyone's got some out there picks. To me though, N, Nester, Goku, Batman, etc, etc. are all kind of in the same boat.

I don't really care about him.

My thing is, if we were to have him, I'd rather have the original story version than the cartoon. :V

Your guess is as good as mine
The only way I'll accept Captain N in Smash is if he's dressed in gaudy 80s/90s fashion with terrible lingo from those eras, and I mean the cringe-worthy stuff.
To be honest if we ever actually need a character to bring obscure NES titles together though we do still have 9-Volt, so there's that.

What does Captain Nintendo look like? Would the general gaming population recognize him instantly like they would with Captain N?

Does Nintendo own Captain N? I can't see him getting in due to not originating in a video game(however, a Mii Fighter costume and references seem fair). Mind you, I'm a fan of the original show, and never read the comic, so... but to be fair, Mother Brain was actually pretty cool with that personality and had a battle tank for a body.
