Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

Don't let me start.. I'm full of nitpicks with characters voices, animations and other small representations and details (Oh.. the Pac-Man trophies..); but Sakurai doesn't change his mind so often.. (but when he changes, he hits everyone low guard);

and since I don't expect the next release to be nothing more than a ''Deluxe'' version of Smash4, we wouldn't have so much changes like bringing voice actors to do new lines and such..

Your guess is as good as mine
That's how Sakurai sees those characters, and only Sakurai's vision matters.

Consider Bowser not running like a weird car anymore a miracle.
Luigi will continue to be weird and make a weird cucumber pose or whatever as his taunt, victory animation, render and everything.
You know, I actually miss Bowser's weird slide with sparks run, it was so unusual.
I'm actually surprised that Luigi doesn't just have a legit T-pose victory screen with how unorthodox his animations are.

Actually that brings up a good question I've been meaning to ask, what would you lot like change aesthetically about the characters? Like, what taunts/victory screens would you change, would you change a certain attack animation, etc.
For instance, I'd change a taunt of Zelda and Sheik to be the spin animation from when they transformed along with the specific transforming tune. They wouldn't actually transform they'd just have the specific animations and would just be a reference to how they used to be the same character. I'd also change Zelda's fireball victory screen to be more dynamic.
For Peach, I'd have her hum different tunes during her dance taunt that reference different tunes throughout Mario history (like the flute tune from SMB3 or the intro part from the classic overworld theme)
For ZSS, I'd change the animation of UpB to instead have her rise with her gun facing upwards with the whip spinning around her before she reaches the highest point and kicks. The way ZSS rises during her UpB now looks really weird with one leg up and one down.

alongside with all the characters voices that need to change (Fire Emblem characters and Cloud speaking in English.. Bowser, Diddy and DK desperately needing their actual voice actors), I would like to have Pac-Man having his Death Sound Effect as a Star K.O. sound and maybe Sonic spreading rings (like Mega Man's blue orbs) when he is KOed.

EDIT: Oh.. and Charles Martinet needs to do a rework on Mario and Luigi.. they both sound so off (was the case since Brawl);

Like seriously, Dedede's Final Smash sucks in design and in battle.

Sonic only loses Rings when taking damage in his games, not when losing a life.
since good part of his moveset is based on Sonic the Fighters, that could be a reference to that game too; Their lifebar are made of rings.. every hit, including the KO one, spread rings everywhere (and it's awesome);

What exactly sounds off about them if you don't me asking? They sound fine to me, and Luigi actually sounds like himself as opposed to having sped up versions of Mario's sound files like in Melee.

I do recall that in Sonic Advance 2, one of Dr. Eggman's inventions (the 5th boss if I recall correctly) can take you out instantly, no matter how many rings you have in your possession.

there are many ways to die in Sonic games without losing rings (traps smashing the character, pits, etc); But I think that the animation and the visual appeal of rings flying everywhere is one of Sonic's most iconics details (right behind his waiting animation);

--Even if you don't need to go literal with the Rings being just a represention of demage, when a character hits the Danger Zone of the stage in Smash, he's actually getting demage before K.O.... so.. =P

What exactly sounds off about them if you don't me asking? They sound fine to me, and Luigi actually sounds like himself as opposed to having sped up versions of Mario's sound files like in Melee.
IMO they sound tired and without any enthusiasm.. far away from things in the Main Mario games, or say Mario Kart 8; --That's was Brawl's fault because of the general tone of the game.. but since they reused in Smash4, is even worse to me.. since the game is now bright and colorful again (how should be).

Bringing a new discussion on a topic which has already been talked a lot, but what do you think are the odds :4marth: and :4feroy: will get their english dubs by Yuri Lowenthal since Code Name: S.T.E.A.M. and Ray Chase since FE Heroes in the respective order?
Unlikely, but it's possible. I wouldn't bash the "tradition" aspect of it, since I didn't see it that way and not all tradition in Smash is bad. I'd be more upset with why didn't they bring in dubs during Brawl. On Cloud, I'd say it's somewhat ridiculous. I would be for bring English dubs for Marth and Roy in the next Smash game. Speaking of dubbing, now I'm interested in a bilingual speaker kinda like Japanese Sonic showing up in Smash for any region, not just Japan. One that's intentionally so.

I hope there are newer mixes for victory themes in the next Smash. That's a nitpick that bothers me a little with Smash for Wii U/3DS.

Actually that brings up a good question I've been meaning to ask, what would you lot like change aesthetically about the characters? Like, what taunts/victory screens would you change, would you change a certain attack animation, etc.
Overall, I would add special victory animation pairs for certain two pair teams. Like Mario & Luigi, Mario & Peach, Fox & Falco, and some other two team pairs that would make sense for something special. I would not just add special victory team animations for all possible pairs.

As for individuals...

:4charizard:: I'd make his down taunt where Charizard fakes falling asleep out of boredom for a short time. It would be different from some pose and roar taunts.

:4megaman:: I understand Mega Man 2 was a huge part of portraying Mega Man, but I'd personally make the iconic Stage Enter jingle as a Victory Theme.

:4wario:/:4wario2:: For the spinning back throw, I would add a "Have a rough day" voice clip on some occasions.

As far as general aesthetic changes I'd like to see, here's my list.

- Marth and Roy are now voiced by Lowenthal and Chase.
- Burton voices Cloud, union permitting.
- Bowser, Donkey Kong, and Diddy ditch the generic monster/gorilla/monkey sound effects.
- Luma color is dependent on Rosalina's color and doesn't vary.
- Little Mac's power meter is altered to show three stars instead, and the KO Punch's animation is changed to more closely resemble the Star Punch without changing its hit box. The meter still fills at the same rate.
- Peach uses Perry for her Up Special instead of a generic parasol.
- Shiny colors for the Pokémon that don't already have them, GameFreak permitting.
- Female Corrin becomes the new default to balance out the fact that Robin defaults to male. Also because female Corrin is more popular.
- I'd change Lucina's taunt quotes to more closely resemble her canonical self...she's arguably the most botched of the Fire Emblem cast when it comes to personality in Smash.
- Wendee Lee voices Lyn's Assist Trophy now.
- Little Mac gets his voice from Punch-Out!! for the Wii.
- Ness gets a Fuzzy Pickles/peace sign taunt.

Oh, I see that others have problems with the voice action as well as I do.

I said this before in a previous topic.

It's not JUST the Voice acting, but also the Voice Direction!
It's voice directing that's equally important, if not, more so.

And I say that's its even worse in this game than it was in Brawl and it really screws over the VAs, especially the American VA's. And it shows with all the characters(fighters AND assists) here.

The Mario cast sounds less enthusiastic and lively. They sound muffled and soulless, especially the Mario Bros. If you like how they sounded in their own series and spinoffs(I LOVE the taunts in Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour), you're not going to like them here. And I don't care what Ryu Myuutsu says, I HATE the roars for Bowser, DK, and Diddy!

The Zelda cast sounds weak when compared to their source games and even Hyrule Warriors.

Samus Aran's dialogue is generic and short, but you wouldn't know since you can barely hear her. Samus needs a good American voice direction, so she, I would think, can sound as good as this!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xG4ei3it8B0&noredirect=1

Kirby sounds almost exactly like he does in Triple Deluxe. The problem here is that it doesn't really work in Smash. He should be a bit more vocal . Another problem is that he really sounds incomprehensible. He was easy to understand in the original Smash and even Kirby: Right Back At Ya, but it seems like they're trying to make him sound more babyish and unpronounceable. And speaking of Kirby: Right Back At Ya, I would love for King Dedede and Meta Knight to have their roles reprised by Ted Lewis and Eric Stewart(or at least, a good expy) respectively. I was never a fan of King Dedede's... uh, "quacks?" Also, its really unfair that DDD doesn't get to speak properly, yet Meta Knight(whose voice I find generic. I rather he sounds like Antonio Banderas) does? Oh course, he's Sakurai's favorite(well,he was).

McCloud & Lombardi's voices aren't bad completely, but all in all, I don't think the voices work for these versions of the characters, whom are much older. Their Brawl voices were spot-on(I liked them)! Also, they need better lines. "No Problem!" "Don't touch the suit." "Come here!" "Firing Up!" and all that jazz.

The more I here the Pokemon's anime voices, the more annoying they sound. Majority, in Smash, at the very bit. The Gen 1 Smashers(#25 & #39) were just reused from Melee, which, compared to Pokepark Wii, is lame. Either the Pocket Monsters sound like actual animals & monsters(like in the games) or they speak properly(like in Mystery Dungeon)! Anything to make that yellow rat less bland and more of an actual character!

Whereas everyone else like Captain Falcon's Voice, I'm the exception! It wasn't bad in the N64, but as the times have passed, I have become irritated with the voice! I rather he sounds like he did in F-ZERO GX, where he had some actual sense!

Like Kirby, Ness has become more incomprehensible that before. And hes' supposed to be an "American?" Well, why not a natural English voice, like Lucas?

Robin and "Marth Jr." ...uh, I mean "Lucina" sounds OK. I'm more ticked off with how little they changed Marth & Ike. The Legendary Hero King, doesn't even get ONE different line, nor acknowledge his No. 1 Fan? What sense does that make? And of course, the Radiant Hero needs better lines than "I fight for my Friends!" All in all, Ike sounds weak.

I'll just say it. Mr. Game & Watch's bleeps and boops sounded better in Melee, especially his death screams.

Pit got a better VA, but his lines are so pathetic! They can do better than that! Why not lines like this!
"Oh, this fight is ON!"
'You are soooo not ready!"
"I'm getting bored."
Think you can keep up!"
Palutena and Pitoo fall under the same category.

Why doesn't Olimar(and Alph) say ANYTHING?! PIKMIN 3 made them so lively and actual characters! Not so in Smash. Thanks, Sakurai!

Wario not saying a damn line is not Wario AT ALL!

I'm neutral towards the Miis. If they were to be given vocal sounds, it would probably be in a similar situation like in Mario Kart and we all know how people feel about those sounds!

Also, concerning character of old and new, I ask something before.

How Important ARE "Uniqueness" and "Originality?"

Agreed. Masked Dedede would've been the most obvious choice.

I also wish they had picked some other Super Ability than Ultra Sword for Kirby's Final Smash. I know it's the most iconic one, but there already was several other characters with sword-slashing Final Smashes...

Speculation is still in infancy.

It probably wont become the speculation people liked until it actually gets announced and has a trailer or something.

Personally I think a Smash Bros game should be 75% Nintendo characters 25% third party guest stars. I'd love to see Taizo Hori from Dig Dug/Mr. Driller appear in a Smash Bros game.
I think it should be ~10-15% for the third-parties. But the one name I never want to hear again around these forums is Shovel Knight

because Butt-Butt would be more preferable!:troll:

"And they call you the Radiant Hero?" and especially "This is the Hero King?" (And to a lesser extent "Come at me!") seem incredibly out of character considering Lucina was never snarky or cocky in Awakening, opting instead for a driven persona and high sense of justice/fixing her future. Most importantly though, she was incredibly honorable when it came to her lineage, so having her outright mock her ancestor seems not only meanspirited, but very out of character.

Completely understandable, we want a character from every Nintendo series to at least appear in one Smash Bros game. (Still waiting for my Pilotwings rep in a Smash Bros game.)

I know almost nothing about Fire Emblem, but I think he means that Lucina is unnecessarily rude in Smash (she is even rude to Marth, wat) and in Fire Emblem she is not like that.

EDIT: Oh, lol, I didn't see your post, Opossum.

Oh you mean her victory quotes.

You said taunts and I thought "Come at me" was fine.

To be fair they ARE taunts, just not in the traditional Smash Bros. sense. :bee:

What would your thoughts be on something akin to Mario Kart 8 Deluxe? As in, it's not just new characters, but something substantial as well like its new battle mode.

Maybe something like two or three characters, a new mode, several new stages and some HD-ified 3DS ones?

If getting the game again is truly the only way to get the new characters, I'd wait until I could get the game pre-owned on the cheap, just as I plan to with MK8D. I'm not giving Nintendo my money for the same basic game again. I'm not fond of the practice, and it frustrates me when they won't release it as DLC as well, even though they can easily do that in addition to rereleasing it.

I mean I'm all for people voting with their wallet and such, so I have no problem with you or anyone else skipping out on it. Honestly I wouldn't even consider buying MK8D if it weren't for the fact that I never bought MK8. :p

That being said it's easy to see why they don't release it as DLC. It'd defeat the whole purpose of rereleasing it at all, which is to bolster Switch sales.

As stupid as that is, I guess that business plan makes sense. I guess I just don't get the hype for the idea, and the connotations behind it. Still, thanks for being reasonable. Usually I get ganged up on for dissenting.

And really, unless you want to use both a Wii U and Switch for some reason, why wouldn't you buy MK8 Deluxe for the Switch if you have one? Why would you want the Deluxe content to be DLC on the Wii U release? Especially when you'd have to pay for that content separately anyway while the Deluxe version has it already in the game along with previous Wii U DLC?

The only reason I could think of is not HAVING a Switch in the first place. But still, it's rather petty to be upset over what's basically version-exclusive content at that point. :p

Just a quick reminder that this IS the Smash Switch speculation thread. I get that MK8D just came out and it's pretty exciting and that there isn't much in terms of Smash Switch to talk about yet but nevertheless this is the speculation thread. At least try to keep it Smash speculation centric.

To be fair, I think it was relevant enough. One of the biggest points of discussion currently about Smash Switch is whether or not it will be an enhanced port of Smash 4. Considering Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is the most relevant example of a Wii U game receiving an enhanced Switch port, I think it's fair to bring it up when it comes to what we can possibly expect for a possible Smash 4 port.

Of course, obviously it should stay relevant to Smash itself, but still. Just felt like offering my two cents. :p

No problem! I just never felt like arguing over whether or not someone else buys something was relevant, you know? Like, what good comes of that? Let people buy what they want, and opt not to buy what they don't, and all that. Personally I think a Smash 4 port would be a good idea, with a potential full Smash 5 later on in the Switch's life cycle. That way those who missed out on Smash 4 Wii U would get to play it, those willing to double/triple dip get to try new content, and those waiting for a full Smash 5 still get their game (and whatever newcomers the 4Switch port brought, too, presumably).

Anyway, I was also mulling over stage ideas, and I think a perfect Fire Emblem stage would be The Outrealms. Basically, the stage starts at the Outrealm Gate before it flashes with a harsh light, transitioning to iconic scenes from throughout the series. You could see Marth (provided he's not in play), Caeda, Merric, and Tiki fight Gharnef or Medeus, transition to a boat map where Celica and her army fight in the background, show off Sigurd vs Arvis or Hector vs Zephiel if Sakurai wanted to be that guy, have Xander clash with Ryoma straight out of Fates's cutscenes, show Chrom and Robin fighting Validar if Robin isn't in play...

I think it'd be a great way to show off the broad scope of the Fire Emblem series in a single traveling stage. Plus, Fire Emblem stages, thus far, have all had transitions, be it layout, location, or both. Castle Siege, Arena Ferox, and Coliseum all share this trait, so The Outrealms would fit right in.

Regarding the voice acting topic from earlier:

The French version was a mess because whereas we had characters WFT speak in French, we also had Robin, Corrin and Ike speak in English while Marth and Roy spoke in Japanese. I don't mind it too much and I know it all pertains to whether the characters have had localized voices as well. Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance, Awakening and Fates never had French dubs, but Radiant Dawn did get one, although I suppose they went with Ike's English/PoR voice instead of the French/RD one to keep it even with the 3DS releases which didn't retain the short-lived French dub trend.

Fox and Falco have had French voices since SF64 3D as well, yet they spoke English in Smash 4 too. Now it is to be noted that the French dub in Star Fox games is objectively horrible and that is acknowledged by many a player in my country, but for the sake of making Smash a coherent and more agreeable experience for the casual audience, wouldn't it be better to put in as many French voices as possible?

That applies to other European countries as well.

Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga DX looks like it could be a thing, maybe this means Fawful's chances to be a playable character in Smash aren't as nonexistent as we all thought?
I'd wait for the rumour to proven true or false. It does help his chances, but I think he will probably still be unlikely. Missing out on both the 3DS M&L games was a blow to his chances.

In case the rumour is true and we do get Superstar Saga DX, it would be useful to pay attention to how much he is advertised. That should tell us how marketable Nintendo thinks he is.

For menus of the possible Smash game on the Switch, what would you guys think of menu themes such as menu design, background, SFX, and music all in the "theme" design? I personally think it's unlikely, but it would add some life into game to switch the themes out, providing the themes can be switched. I would prefer the themes to be based on franchise rather than character to ease the work and would be embracing the franchises that fighters come from.

For example sake, I'll use Tekken and yes, the the actual execution could go in a different way. Imagine we do have a Tekken character (Insert iconic Tekken character here) and we got a theme of the Tekken franchise. The "theme" gives a slideshow of all the title screens of the Tekken games up to date as a background. You hear some Tekken tracks that are appropriate picks for hearing things in the menus like the character select of Tekken 2's console release. You hear some sound effects of highlights and selection sounds pulled from the Tekken games like from Tekken 2 or Tekken 3. The menus items and the like look like they were given skins of Tekken design that blend well with the game menu design.

Aside of being a bit of work, I think it would be a great aesthetic addition to Super Smash Bros. for players. It would give players a feeling of "Hey, I like this theme," or "Hey, I am showin' off my favorite franchise that's in Smash."

I think that's a fine idea, though I imagine there'd be some issues with third party series and a bit of backlash from fans. I'm leaning more in favor of it, but at the same time I do feel like it'd be a little weird and feel less like Smash if that makes any sense. In the end though since it'd be an optional customization feature, I'd support that.

A similar but even more unlikely idea I had was for each menu to have a simple, looping, animated illustration appropriate to the particular item selected (with an accompanying track).

Imagine the actual menu is a bar on the side where you scroll down whatever options they have with the rest of the screen being taken up by the image.

So highlighting an Adventure Mode (provided we got one) would have something like the Mario Bros., Link and Toon Link aboard the King of Red Lions with a simple animation on the water and background to make it seem like they're moving along while the Great Sea remix plays.

It keeps with the crossover theme of Smash while making the menus more interesting/dynamic. Probably a lot more work than they'd be willing to put into it though.

I think most people would be content with just having alternate menu themes from repped franchises, such as this one:

Also may I have A Distant Demon A Distant Demon 's agreement for creating a new thread about veterans's movesets overhaul ideas?

And really, unless you want to use both a Wii U and Switch for some reason, why wouldn't you buy MK8 Deluxe for the Switch if you have one? Why would you want the Deluxe content to be DLC on the Wii U release? Especially when you'd have to pay for that content separately anyway while the Deluxe version has it already in the game along with previous Wii U DLC?

The only reason I could think of is not HAVING a Switch in the first place. But still, it's rather petty to be upset over what's basically version-exclusive content at that point. :p
The irony of the story, however, is knowing that the original Wii U version has better stat balance than the Switch port. A scenario like that can make you wonder if a Smash Bros. port would make gameplay adjustments and fighter attribute changes that make the fighters operate differently than in Smash 3DS / Wii U.
