What about Balloon Fighter for the retro character? Could be a tribute for Iwata since he worked on the game. It's already had an item and stage in Smash before.

I never wanted this before Iwata's passing, but since he was a creation of Iwata, I want him and pretty badly.

To be honest though, there's basically no 'bad choice' Sakurai can make for a retro character honestly.

Outside of Ice Climbers. Honestly, I still am not sold in having them back and I think their cut is pretty much justified to due to ; development time, lack of popularity and terrible chain grab mechanics that will likely remain unfixed.

Give me Pichu before them, and am not being sarcastic.

Have it be similar to Olimar but instead of plucking Pikmin, he would pump up a balloon if one is popped. He'd have a lot better recovery with two balloons rather than one or none.

Maybe could have him be a reverse Little Mac where he plays great in the air but terrible on the ground.

The only thing BF ever does is already in someone else's moveset (Villager's upB, which even nods to it by name), so his chances are pretty low.

Not to mention some retro characters have more potential, like Takamaru (who was planned to be an actual character), Lip, Mach Rider and so on.

I don't see why not, didn't we get another character before as part of a tribute to mr. Yokoi? I think it was Mr. Game & Watch.

If its a brand new Smash game, I can't see why they cant just give Villager's up special to Balloon Fighter and give Villager something else.

They need to add characters that will help to sell the port. Most people just ask for retro characters because they think they have to fill that "retro slot" lol, not because they really want a retro character. Plus look at the retro characters that are already in the game, they are very unpopular compared to the others, like, nobody plays as them.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe added characters that were missing for no reason like Dry Bones, King Boo and Bowser Jr. and some guess characters that are from the most popular new Nintendo IP... and Gold Mario, who is just a recolour.

So yeah, I personally think we will get the more popular choices, like veterans, Inklings and some ballot characters, not retro or wtf characters or whatever.

It does represent the franchise actually. When you pop the enemy balloons, they pump them back up if they aren't killed. Like someone else said, they could just change Villager's recovery to something else if need be. I'd be fine with those retro characters too, but I wouldn't say BF's chances are pretty low.

Pretty sure that was also a thing that Balloon Kid could do as well, so it's not like that was an ability that only the enemies could do in the Balloon Fight series.

I think a retro and WTF!?-character longside new stuff as Inklings, Mr.Dude From Third Party Franchise I Don't Give A **** About, a Pokemon, and Wolf are just about the most predictable thing that Sakurai will do.

King K.Rool, Ridley and all other cool and awesome choices aren't as likely because the internet really wants them.

Sakurai even chose characters he put down as "not fighting material" as Pac-Man, Villager and the Mii's above MEWTWO who was easily far more popular than K.Rool and Ridley combined before his reveal as DLC. Even Wii Fit Trainer was put in before him...

Masahiro Sakurai is not a man you can easily predict. He probably prides himself on that exact feature as Smash Director. [instensive laughs from the background]

If I didn't know any better, I'd almost swear that part of the reason that Villager uses Balloon Fighter's balloon's in the first place is so Sakurai could subtly include Alice in Smash...

I'd make a long and elaborate list about the Assist Trophies I'd like to see in Smash, but then again I'd just rather Sakurai surprise me with his picks like he did with Brawl and Smash 4.

Off the top of my head though: if Sidon doesn't make it in as the new, long-awaited sixth Zelda rep, then why not have him join the Assist Trophies?

Jokes aside though, I feel the Champions have more AT potential.

The big things: The only character who is most qualified to capitalize on the flower effect(yes I know Jiggs has it in Rest) essentially becoming the first damage-over-time character unless you count Olimar as that, the blocks and mechanics from her game series can be incorporated into her moveset in a variety of ways (though that's true of all candidates).
The small things: Retro/Puzzle/female rep, iirc Sakurai called her game series a masterpiece, Magical Girl archetype? its still pretty popular nowadays, design that stands out among the rest of the roster, her wand has been in the game 3 times now.
She's still pretty unlikely, but as a Retro rep she's certainly up there.

A lot of that is practically irrelevant though. As you said, the flower thing (doing passive damage) is already present in Olimar. Female rep can apply to a lot of characters, same with retro, and until/if he gets cut, Doc is already a puzzle rep.

I'm just thinking about this from a planning standpoint, she really doesn't fill any voids that are currently present.

All that being said, I want her, but I would never say she's a likely choice or better put, priority, unless Sakurai goes on a serious Gameboy binge.

I'm sure Ever Oasis is going to be another Codename STEAM in terms of popularity.

I dont think it will.

Codename STEAM's issue was it was a cluster**** of ideas. You have a game about characters from US literature in a steam punk world fighting Lovecraft aliens all in the style of silver age comics. Oh, and the team is headed by Abe Lincoln who has a giant mech of himself for some reason. Do you see the problem? The game threw out so many different ideas and none of them meshed together well. The game, even from its initial reveal, left people confused. I think the gameplay issues (slow enemy turns, enemy overwatch being broken) didn't help.

Ever Oasis doesn't have this problem. It has a pretty set theme. It is from people with experience with both RPG and action/adventure games. And its releasing on a system known for RPGs. The biggest threat to this game is that its coming out towards the end of the DS's life. But beyond that, it has all the makings to do well, or at least do better than STEAM. This is coming from someone who likes STEAM and wants Henry in Smash.

Ice Climbers are characters who are only really popular because of Smash like Lucas and Roy as opposed to characters who were added to Smash in the first place because of established popularity.

On a different note, I can see the ballot "runner up" being the first character revealed for a hypothetical Switch (and I wouldn't be surprised if it was another third-party character)

ehhhh it'll probably be easy for them to differentiate between Olimar's and Lip's passive damage concepts. Lip would use the specific flower effect, which by itself is already different from Olimar's Pikmin, and the way to get the flower can be different too. While Olimar has a single move to throw and potentially sacrifice the Pikmin for damage, Lip can have a variety of ways the devs can have her use the flower effect, such as having multiple moves cause the flower but are unsafe requiring those moves to be comboed into, or having the size of the flower be dependent on how long you can string moves together on an opponent, referencing Panel de Pon in how the longer your combos of blocks the more your opponent is at a disadvantage.
Not only that but the mechanics in her game too: the blocks that combo, the garbage blocks that drop from the sky, the switching cursor, they can all be implemented to make Lip stand out just as much as any other character on the roster. You're probably right about her not being a priority character though, as much as that sucks.

It would make sense to have someone like Lissa being an AT healing, or a mage character (with appropriate clothing, sorry Tharja/Camilla) to shoot out a few spells, or Elincia to fly around and stab people.

Tharja's can be her creepily obsessing over a random player because that's all she does.
Xander and Ryoma can be summoned and they call in their siblings to beat up other foes whilst the younger sisters heal the summoner.
Arvis can turn someone into a bonfire
Knoll summons monsters and uses dark magic.

Also it should be with the Breidablik, not a generic Assist Trophy.

Chocobos. Simple, iconic, in every different FF universe so they mesh well with Cloud or whoever else they could add.

You know, for all the crap Fire Emblem gets for its playable characters, it really doesn't have much other than that and it's a shame. Only one AT from such a storied franchise with a massive cast is a missed opportunity.
