Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

Predictions
1. Inklings -duh
2. Spring Man-new IP they sem to really want to Push and he is the "logical" choice (although he may be too late and miss the cut)
3. Wolf- was one of the most popular veterans (at the very least the loudest during the ballot)
4. Ice Climbers- popular veteran that only got cut from technical issues (which I assume no lnger exist)
5. Decidueye/Midnight Lycanroc- Uber popular pokemon with a lot of moveset potential / a pokemon that seems to be getting a lot of advertisement +lycanroc in general being pushed

Wants
1. Viridi- most wanted smash newcomer, favorite cahracter from favorite game
2. Ridley- I've had like 4 Ridley threads now I feel like this is a given.
3. Edea Lee- I really love Bravely Second and think there is a lot ot potential for a cahracter and the franchise

5. Sora- always loved the series

Here's an idea to pass time waiting for E3. List the 5 characters you think will be in from least to most likely AND list the five that you personally want with reasons for each, like so.

Prediction List

5. Spring Man: ARMS is making a lot fo positive waves and has a neat fighting concept built inot it's design. It's low on the list because it's still not out yet.
4. Gen 7 Pokemon: Game Freak always likes to have their stuff recent.
3. Animal Crossing character: Animal Crossing has a lot of gameplay potential in aspects not represented in the villagers moveset and the games
2. Donkey Kong Character: It's the last of the original series that's still missing some popular characters and there's rumors of another game on the way
1. Inkling: Splatoon is Nintendo showing not only can they can get modern game ideas like online shooters, they can improve on them. Splatoon has been a big sucess and

Want List

5. Ridley: Because the Dream still won't die.
4. Ribbon Girl: Because we need a multi-jump character that isn't a ballon/doesn't have wings.
3. Krystal: Smash need weaon variety beyond Sword and different Sword.
2. Captain Toad: Those guy's need a Rep not lodged int Peach's bustle.
1. Shantae: With Bayonetta in, her supposed risque-ness should be no problem at all.

Sure.

Prediction:

5: ARMS person. New IP that seems poised to be the next big thing. However, they might want to wait until ARMS proves itself as big IP like Splatoon has.

4: King K Rool. Probably did very very good on the Ballot.

3: Decidueye. GameFreak is gonna want some attention on Gen 7 and Decidueye seems like the best pick.

2:Captain Toad. Toad is the only missing character from the Mario ''Big Leaguers'' and now has his own game. Seems like a no-brainer.

1: Inklings. Very very obvious. Splatoon is by far and away the most popular new IP Nintendo has come up with this decade.

Wants:

5: Great Puma. The final boss of NES Pro Wrestling, which is one of my favorite games. He has every special move, so he reps the entire game.

4: Simon Belmont. Think about the characters whose games defined the NES. Mario, Link, Megaman, Samus.. Only one is missing.

3: Muddy Mole. We have yet to see a retro Gameboy character, and this guy has connections to Miyamoto himself. Has a lot of moveset potential involving digging holes and throwing Cabbages and other things.

2: King K. Rool. I love me some DKC. We need more villains, and ol' K. Rool is a very unique one.

1: King Hippo. Iconic, recognizable character from one of my favorite series: Punch Out. Little Mac was my most wanted for 4, and now I got him i've started thinking about new Punch Out reps, and King Hippo is the best choice imo.

Honorable Mentions (for wants) go to Meowth, Paper Mario, Ridley.

I'll bite.

Predictions list:

5. ARMS character:

If nothing else, they have neat concepts. But it's an untested and unreleased IP, and we all know how well that fared for Splatoon in the last game's DLC cycle.

4. Ubisoft rep character:

Ubi's been noticeably supportive of the Switch plus there's those Rayman trophies. You never know.

3. Ballot character:

This could be anyone. Lack of numbers means I'm not singling out anyone for this since it's pretty much impossible to gauge how well they did (fan polls are not entirely accurate numbers, before anyone points to one in response).

2. Sun/Moon Pokemon: Borderline no-brainer. My three main bets for this would Decidueye/Tapu Koko/Incineroar but I'm open to most mons from SM appearing in Smash.

1. Inklings. Actual no-brainer. End story.

Want List

5. [empty space]: Because I really don't have any interests beyond the following four.

4. Rayman:

I've always liked the thingamajig. Still remember the excitement of seeing his trophy and then having those hopes dashed away in the end. Future's looking good for his series, if not Smash entry, but who knows.

3. Tapu Koko:

Strong contender for a top 5, if not my favorite Sun/Moon mon.

2. Inklings:

duh

1. Sylux:

duh

Since everyone's doing characters, I'm going to try predicting something different, balance changes (assuming a port/same engine) :

1. Diddy, Bayonetta, Cloud and Sheik get nerfs that'll make em drop on the tier list causing a great panic for like, 5 weeks, until people realize they're actually still the best characters.
2. No Jigglypuff buffs, it's a depressing no-brainer. Some weirdo will also inevitably go insane when he realizes they haven't buffed her.
3. Zelda and Ganondorf get a lot of buffs which make people think they've become better off, however Nintendo fails to actually address their problems and a month later everyone realizes they still suck.
4. Marth and Lucina get more buffs after the inclusion of the inevitable new FE character to promote the series, but since they're already really good they become broken.
5. R.O.B.'s eyes still won't be fixed in multiplayer and neither will Bowser Jr.'s overlapping hurtboxes.
Honorable Mention: Somewhere and somehow Pac-Man will get another really weird glitch that they'll remove next patch.

I expect:

5. Bandana Dee, because I am biased.

The others are pretty "obvious".

4. New Pokemon, Decidueye or Lycanroc Midnight
3. Ice Climbers
2. Wolf
1. Inkling

I want:

5. K. Rool
4. Magolor
3. Bomberman
2. Ridley
1. Bandana Dee

Predictions - Least to most likely

5. Spring Man - ARMS seems like it's slated to be another successful new IP like Splatoon. We'll have to wait and see of course, but Nintendo is pushing it quite a bit and many people seem to like it so far.

4. New Pokemon - A new Pokemon seems like a given imo. Gen 7 has quite a few popular options though which is why I'm not specifying any particular Pokemon.

3. Wolf - A veteran many would like to see return, and Star Fox while taking a bit of a blow from Zero's failure, seems like it has a future if Miyamoto is true to his word.

2. Ice Climbers - Another veteran and a very unique character many would like to return. So long as there aren't anymore issues developing them, I think they're quite likely.

1. Inkling - Splatoon was a great success.

Wants - No particular order
  • Ganon - There are few major/recurring Zelda characters left to pull from for new reps, but among them, I think Ganon is a bit of a glaring omission. We've had two Links and two Zeldas with Sheik being a "one time but at the right time" character. Yet Ganon, who has several more appearances than Ganondorf, just as much moveset potential, and a longer history within the franchise has been largely ignored. Not even receiving so much as a trophy.
  • Ridley - It's Ridley.
  • Simon Belmont/Bomberman/Snake - I'd love to have Snake back, but I'd also happily take Simon or Bomberman as possible Konami characters. I think they all have merit, and choosing between them is too hard. :p
  • Ryu Hayabusa - Koei Tecmo has a long history with Nintendo, and the relationship remains quite good to this day. Ninja Gaiden is a classic from the NES era that I think would fit in quite well.
  • Shantae - WayForward has been a partner to Nintendo for a long time. She may be western and indie, but I love the series and she remains among my most wanted.
4: Simon Belmont. Think about the characters whose games defined the NES. Mario, Link, Megaman, Samus.. Only one is missing.
I'd argue two, being Simon Belmont and Ryu Hayabusa.

When I think NES I think; Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Mega Man, Castlevania and Ninja Gaiden. edit: And Final Fantasy.

That might just be me, but Ninja Gaiden is still fairly iconic as far as I know. Not that big nowadays I suppose, but that seems to have been the unfortunate case for Mega Man and Castlevania as well with how their companies have treated them.

Expectations:

5): Dixie Kong
4): Ice Climbers
3): Wolf
2): Inklings
1): New Pokémon

And with this new Pokémon I think Incineroar and Lycanrock are the more obvious choices. Not perse Decidueye. It's typing is the only thing that makes it popular it seems, and it feels forced. Doubt it's gonna be the owl archer honestly. Anyhow, New Pokémon is almost 98,76% guaranteed.

Wants:

4): Isaac - Stil love Golden Sun yet am not sure if this will ever happen honestly.
3): Dixie Kong - Can reasonably happen yet, same was so last time.
2): Impa - Shame her Breath of the Wild role isn't workable, any appearance counts but it's looking real shaky honestly. Could reasonably happen depending on the existence of Skyward Sword HD.
1): King K.Rool - Mii Costume be damned. I didn't vote 168.980 times on the ballot for you for nothing.

Predictions (no particular order):

-Inklings - the closest thing there is to a no-brainer as far as newcomer picks are concerned. Splatoon was a huge success, so I'd be surprised if they didn't make it in

-Donkey Kong newcomer - it's vague, but I don't know whether Dixie or K. Rool would be more likely (Dixie having a major role in the most recent game, and K. Rool appearing to be more popular among the fanbase). They'd have to be completely oblivious to miss the demand for a Donkey Kong newcomer, so I feel like at least one of those two seems really likely

-Wolf - as far as returning veterans go, there seems to be a large amount of demand and he should be easy enough to remake

-Wonder Red - I feel like he'll be like Ness, Shulk, and Pit - the main character of a lesser-known Nintendo franchise that the development team wants to give some love. The fact that the Smash team already has some ties to Platinum seems to help.

-Rayman - as far as third party newcomers go, I feel like he's the most likely. They've already been in touch with Ubisoft, since Rayman got a trophy in Smash 4, and Ubisoft's been a major supporter of Nintendo consoles since the Wii, at least. Plus, Rayman Origins and Legends makes it easy to translate a move-set into Smash

Wants:

-SNAKE - seriously, they'd better bring him back. He was so much fun to use in Brawl, and Konami seems to be regaining their senses, so hopefully there's a chance (ideally, Bomberman would also be added)

-Ridley - there's been consistent interest in him since about 2001. I have no idea what programming a game involves, but you'd think that they could make him work with enough effort, especially given how much of a demand there is

-Travis Touchdown - his chances don't seem particularly likely, but I thought the same thing about Bayonetta even though I supported her.

-K. Rool - the decision to make him a Mii costume is still baffling. At least with Inklings, it makes for a somewhat decent consolation prize since the Mii costume strongly resembles the Inklings, but that's definitely not the case with K. Rool.

-Midna - Zelda seems to be long overdue for a newcomer (I find it hard to believe that they haven't been able to come up with any ideas for a new playable Zelda character since 2001), Hyrule Warriors showed that a lot of characters have potential, and Midna seems like she'd have a lot of material to work with while allowing for a creative and interesting move-set (plus, she's the only helper character that was actually interesting)

Predictions (likelihood):
1 - Inkling (I mean, everyone would be shocked if it's not the case);
2 - Rayman/Bomberman (3rd Party newcomer is the best thing for marketing purposes);
3 - Wolf (easiest veteran to put back in the game);
4 - Ice Climbers (probably the most beloved veterans);
5 - Snake (would be a big deal bringing him back, but I don't think he has a remote chance);

Want (likelihood):
1 - King K. Rool (always will be my first one choice);
2 - Crash Bandicoot (among the iconic mascots in Smash, he's the only one I think is missing);
3 - Krystal (for the diversity in the Star Fox cast, also.. I miss Rare);
4 - Wonder Red (protagonist of a criminally underlooked game);
5 - Spring Man (has won me with his charisma and I think that ARMS will be pretty big).

1. Shantae: With Bayonetta in, her supposed risque-ness should be no problem at all.
Expectations:

5. Wolf - Easy port.

4. Ice Climbers - Slightly more difficult but more fulfilling port, plus Sakurai at least mentioned their absence, unlike with Wolf.

3. Spring Man - ARMS is a new IP with clear fighter potential.

2. Decidueye/Midnight Lycanroc/Tapu Koko - Uber popular starter with clear fighting potential and gimmick built in/highly promoted and popular legendary/highly promoted claw fighter.

1. Inklings - Nintendo's biggest success story in recent years.

Wants:

5. Decidueye - Grass and Ghost archer owl. A long ranged fighter who would have lower movement speed and rely on trapping the opponent from a distance with Spirit Shackle to get in close. Has terrific air mobility as well.

4. Alm - A charming and likeable character who would utilize a mix of bow and sword attacks, peppered in with skills from Echoes like Curved Shot/Anti-Fliers or his special skill I won't spoil.

3. Celica - Offers a very obvious playstyle niche while also being a neat and charming character. Her niche would essentially be an improved version of Pichu's, where her spells cause her to take damage the longer she charges them, but they become much more powerful. She'd utilize spells such as Fire (neutral special), Excalibur (up special), Seraphim (side special), and Ragnarok (fully charged neutral special), alongside a unique down special in Mila's Turnwheel, which allows her to rewind the fight by a few seconds once per stock so long as she is on the ground when she activates it, allowing her to correct a mistake without making it broken.

2. Crash Bandicoot - A third party icon who would fight with a zany and cartoony moveset. He'd use his Spin, Wumpa Bazooka, Arrow Crate, and Crate Drop as special moves, with Aku Aku being used in his Final Smash.

1. Chrom - To no one's surprise, he's my most wanted. He would switch between the Exalted Falchion and the Blessed Lance to change his fighting style using his down special, Convoy. These stances give added effects to Chrom's other three specials and completely alter his normals. His other specials are named after three of his other skills (Rightful King, Luna, and Sol) but for brevity's sake I won't detail them here.

Honorable mentions: Inkling, Henry Fleming, Frogger, Muddy Mole, Lara Croft.

But yeah, considering three out of five of my most wanted are Fire Emblem characters, RIP me.

Umm. I would like to hear about how this would work.
I was waiting for someone to ask! :D

I have the concept written out and prepared exactly for a moment like this. Here's a detailing of Frogger's specials to illustrate how I think his playstyle would be.

Neutral Special: Frog Dodge - The key to Frogger's playstyle. Normally, Frogger moves pretty slowly, with his hops being slightly faster than Ganondorf. However, when he presses B, Frogger leaps to the side, similar to a sidestep in functionality. If Frogger avoids an attack this way, he gains a speed and mobility boost. This stacks in three levels. At the third level, he moves at Fox's speed and has virtually no starting lag on his moves. However, should he whiff the Frog Dodge, he will be wide open for attack and lose any built up mobility bonuses.

Side Special: Tongue Whip - A command grab. Frogger latches his tongue onto an opponent. While held, the player can flick their stick in any direction to have Frogger toss foes that way. The flick speed and hold duration affect how far and how fast the opponent will be tossed.

Up Special: Alligator Snap - A hungry alligator appears beneath Frogger and opens its jaw, springing Frogger upward. It then slams its jaws shut, giving severe knockback to foes caught in its mouth.

Down Special: Serpent Summon - Frogger leaps back as a snake appears in front of him. If the opponent is right in front of the snake, the snake will latch onto them, holding them in place for a short while and allowing Frogger to strike. This move has a short range similar to Mewtwo's Disable.

Final Smash: Rush Hour - Frogger and the opponent(s) in range are brought to the infamous highway. While Frogger ducks into his riverbed home, the foes are repeatedly run over by traffic.

What I did was first ask myself, "What is Frogger really about?" Basically, if you boil the game down to its core, it's about speedy dodging. That's where the inspiration for the Frog Dodge came from. The rest of the moveset would consist of lots of tongue lashes and kicking attacks, mostly, alongside a few moves where he hits foes with his briefcase (since Frogger's cabinet art featured him in a tie carrying a briefcase, the height of frog fashion, surely).

So yeah, Frogger. I think he can be neat. :p

.. Y'know, f this happens, after I get over the intial shock of FROGGER being the damn Konami rep over Simon, Bomberman, Snake, or really anything else... I think this would be neat. Good Idea!

Expectations:

5): ARMS character (self explanatory)
4): Ice Climbers (The Switch should be powerful enough ton handle them)
3): Wolf (Easy addition)
2): Inklings (A new successful IP and Splatoon was one of the Wii U's biggest hits)
1): New Pokémon (This is Pokemon. You can always expect a newcomer).

Wants:

5: Asuka (I know this is unlikely because life and hometown is forbidden in Smash, but girl can dream)
4): Isaac (He's been long overdue. Golden Sun is ripe for more attention)
3): Isabelle (She's easily my favorite Animal Crossing character and I would like to see her fight beside Villager)
2): Susie Haltmann (She's definitely an interesting Kirby villain and I'm glad she's getting more attention in recent games).
1): King K. Rool (KrocTheVote. I've been wanting this bloke for far too long. He would fit in so well beside Bowser and Ganondorf).

Expectation:

5. Spring Man: I can see him being included to promote ARMS since Nintendo seems to be making a big deal about the new IP.
4. Unidentified Ballot Choice: Odds are at least one of the runner-ups after Bayonetta would be considered.
3. Marshadow/Incineroar/Lycanroc Midnight/Tapu Koko/Mimikyu/Rowlet: A new Pokémon seems reasonably likely, and these are currently among the top 6 of odds (in no specific order) based on what Sakurai has said about how Pokémon fighters get chosen. List subject to change based on future information.
2. Ice Climbers: They were planned to return and only got scrapped because of hardware issues. Assuming there is nothing wrong with them showing up for a Switch release, they're coming back.
1. Inkling: Barring any possible issues in regards to how they would work, the Inklings are no-brainers, even moreso than the Ice Climbers.

Want:

5. Wolf: I liked playing as him.
4. Shovel Knight: FOR SHOVELRY!
3. Shadow/Eggman: My two favorite Sonic characters. Don't know which of the two I would like to see more.
2. Incineroar/Buzzwole: These two would be my Pokémon of choice from Sun & Moon. Which one I would want more is honestly up for debate, but between the two, only one has an actual shot at this point.
1. Waluigi: Expecting someone reasonable? TOO BAD! WALUIGI TIME!

Roy's fire sword effects get swapped for Fire Emblem Echoes's lightning sword effects
Lightning and fire aren't just cosmetics, but also affect gameplay (Fire makes explosive crates explode immediately, lightning stuns the enemy). Considering Sakurai outright said "If there's even the smallest gameplay difference, the character should be separate" or something like that when Lucina was confirmed.

Predictions:
1. Inkling: Should be quite obvious why.
2. Ice Climbers: Popular veterans cut only due to 3DS limitations.
3. Wolf: Popular veteran that can be added quite easily.
4. ARMS character: For promotional reasons.
5. Sun/Moon Pokemon. Pokemon always gets a newcomer, I doubt that'll change in next Smash.

Wants:
1. King K. Rool. I've wanted this guy for so long.
2. Bandana Dee. He's adorable, and there's no spear users in Smash yet.
3. Captain Toad. Toad is probably the most well-known Nintendo character not in Smash yet. I personally prefer the captain over regular Toad.
4. Ridley. Most likely won't happen, though...
5. Decidueye. My favorite gen 7 starter, plus he would have a lot of moveset potential.

1. Ice Climbers - Because they got robbed in the 3DS/Wii U versions.
2. Wolf - There wasn't a reasonable explanation for his cut, so he needs to be put back in.
3. Lycanroc - The moment I saw him revealed for Sun and Moon, l knew he'd be perfect for Smash.
4. Rayman - Only because with Rabbids getting a crossover game with Mario, it only makes sense to keep the trend going by putting the main protagonist in Smash.
5. Inkling Boy and Inkling Girl - They were added to Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, so why not Smash? Clearly they are the most popular choice.

Wants:
1. Sceptile - Now that he is more fleshed out as a fighter in Pokken Tournament, adding him would be amazing
2. Linkle - She could be a semi-Bayonetta clone, or completely unique. She definitely would be an interesting Zelda character to add.
3. Isaac - He's been a long time coming, to be honest. His exclusion as an Assist Trophy greatly benefits him.
4. Bomberman - Konami needs a rep, and which Super Bomberman R being released on the Switch, he is still relevant enough to be part of Smash.
5. Captain Toad - We need a rep that isn't a variation of a current one.

As a side note, I'd like to see Alph separated from Olimar and have his own moves, maybe with Rock Pikmin.

5. Wolf. Star Fox is relevant again, meaning he's likely higher priority than he previously was. It also helps that he's one of only two veterans who don't either have baggage or are potentially low priority themselves.
4. Another third party. They've been adding crossover characters at a modest pace, so I could see one or two here. I'm hesitant to name exact names because third parties are notoriously hard to predict aside from a couple past cases (Sonic and Pac-Man), but if I had to pick the most likely ones, I'd say Rayman, a Monster Hunter, or another Square-Enix character. Maybe Bomberman, but he has some unanswered questions.
3. Ice Climbers. Spent Smash 4 so far on what amounts to the DL because having too many pairs fighting at once was screwing up the 3DS version--probably causing lag. The Switch is much more powerful, so the only thing that kept them out isn't keeping them out any more...unless 8-Player Smash and eight sets of climbers is too much.
2. A Gen 7 Pokémon. It's funny, for how much this one stares in people's faces, you don't see Pokémon characters pop up on many roster predictions...except in this thread, apparently; nicely done. Nintendo's second biggest IP has a plethora of viable new characters with each new generation, it's the only series to gain at least one newcomer in every single Smash game so far, and Sun and Moon have sprung into the spotlight at the perfect time. Decidueye's the frontrunner here, but with how many unique options Gen 7 in particular has, I wouldn't rule out more than one Pokémon newcomer if we see enough new content or another round of DLC.
1. Inkling. Goes without saying, pretty much. Sakurai has a history of waiting on characters from brand new IPs to see how they pan out, which is probably why they were passed on for DLC. But now Nintendo's newest stars have proven they have staying power, and they certainly have the unique abilities and moveset potential to make them compelling newcomers.

Worth mentioning that I'm not very confident about Spring Man. I think they'll wait to see how ARMS does first to ensure they don't jump the gun, just like how they waited on the Inklings for DLC, Wii Fit Trainer for Brawl, and Olimar for Melee. I could also see another Ballot character happening, but who that would be is too difficult to judge to have any potential pick crack the list above.

Wants
5. Isaac. A spellsword character with earth-based magic that is nearly nonexistent on the roster so far? Count me in, even though he needs the Smash Ballot to stand a chance.
4. Either Terra or Black Mage. The fantasy theme continues with the two Final Fantasy characters I'd be most interested in seeing. Both have proficiency with magic, and potentially with unique mechanics: Black Mage with mana points used to cast his specials and stronger attacks, and Terra's ability to Trance into her half-esper form for short periods of time.
3. Lycanroc. Maybe I'm barking up the wrong tree (heh), or maybe I've been noticing something people are overlooking. The total lack of earth users so far means there's a niche wide open for the taking, and the two (potentially more) forms could be utilized in some really interesting ways. Pseudo-transformation that avoids the issues that got previous full transformations cut, anyone?
2. Krystal. You know, sometimes I end up kind of...sympathizing with a character. Krystal has an unfair reputation in places, scapegoated for "ruining" Star Fox by the series' genwunners and for being a Rule 34 magnet as if every other main character in the series isn't also. And now the newest Star Fox game is yet another retread of 64 that leaves her out in the cold. But, she made a lot of waves in the Smash Ballot, and her ability to mix battlestaff techniques with a combination of both magic and technology is something literally no other character can lay claim to. Who knows?
1. ...Actually, I'm gonna wait on this one for a few days. Let's just say another challenger is approaching soon, though its chances rely on something happening that's unlikely but not entirely out of the question.

Apparently I have a thing for magic users and elemental powers. Honorable mentions go to Decidueye, King K. Rool, Alm or Celica (*raises flame shield*), Hunter, Amaterasu, maybe Lloyd, Geno, anyone from Bravely Default/Second, Rex if we're still getting more content when Xenoblade 2 drops, and Alolan Ninetales, like that'll ever happen.

There's a lot a characters I actually like, but not nearly want as much as K.Rool, Dixie, Impa or Isaac.

I for example, would like the Federation Trooper playable, cause a 3rd Metroid character might otherwise simply not happen. And it's a heavy weight mech fighter. A sort of super heavy mix between Samus and Mii Gunner.

Am also down for Mimikyu but forget it's existence all the time.

Still also would like to see either Toad or Paper Mario. Yet not looking good for either, unless it's Captain Toad.

Some Pokémon from Pokken would also be cool. Especially Sceptile and Blaziken. I also still loyally support Blastoise. Even Raichu, as a Pikachu semi clone, fighting much like N64 Smash Pikachu.

In general, I like semi clones. A lot. So I wouldn't mind seeing more of them at all, as long as it makes sense for them to be a semi clone.

Oh yeah and Hector, also want that guy.

See, you can express an opinion without being obnoxious. Way to go buddy! :076:

Afm my expectation/want lists:

Expectation:
  • 5: Rayman (thanks to the Mario x Rabbids leak)
  • 4: Takamaru
  • 3: Wolf
  • 2: Ice Climbers
  • 1: Inkling
Want:
  • 4 (tie): Any new Metroid and Xenoblade rep
  • 3: Decidueye
  • 2: Dixie Kong
  • 1: Pretty Shantae

Lightning and fire aren't just cosmetics, but also affect gameplay (Fire makes explosive crates explode immediately, lightning stuns the enemy). Considering Sakurai outright said "If there's even the smallest gameplay difference, the character should be separate" or something like that when Lucina was confirmed.
That and Gaiden/SoV doesn't have Weapon Durability or a Pair up mechanic so Celica wouldn't work as a Robin alt either.

Everyone who thinks there are too many Fire Emblem characters already will be hunting for you.

Good thing you're a possum though, because you can just fool them by playing dead :p
The funny thing about the Fire Emblem representation is that we have the exact same amount of Fire Emblem fighters as Pokemon fighters. And yet, people are asking for a new Pokemon representative.

Then again, the Super Mario series have 7 representatives, though Dr. Mario probably should've represented the Dr. Mario series.

And the even funnier thing is that both franchises have a HUGE roster of characters, so it would only seem natural that they get more characters than some other franchises because of how much potential there is.

There's also how Celica's magic works, but I felt like the gameplay change was the most significant as Sakurai talked about it
Sakurai also says he wants to portray characters as accurately as possible (though some would probably disagree in some instances :4ganondorf:)
Celica as an alt for Robin is just not accurate at all. It would only get her right in that she uses a sword and magic.

She should take damage when using her magic (:pichumelee: but not ****) and not be limited by durability.

I like Fire Emblem and all, but it's not on the same level as Mario, Zelda, and Pokemon. Those series should have more characters. Zelda's had the same amount since Melee, while Fire Emblem has tripled. I'm fine with Fire Emblem getting another new character(hoping for a villain like Black Knight) though as long as other series get some love as well. Would like to see DK, Metroid, and F-Zero get another character especially.

Not to mention that outside of Heroes (for consistency reasons, but Heroes isn't canon anyway) Celica doesn't use tomes for her magic, and considering Robin can toss his tomes at people, that's yet another gameplay change.

Your guess is as good as mine

I'd say that's due to Pokemon being an incredibly iconic series that has been popular since day 1, it's essentially Ninty's no 2 franchise behind Mario. Pokemon are also incredibly varied when it comes to their design and what they do, and people are more likely to respond positively to more Pokemon reps than FE reps.
Sakurai also says he wants to portray characters as accurately as possible (though some would probably disagree in some instances :4ganondorf:)

The easiest way to add Celica is to simply make her a Robin clone. Remove durability, Levin Sword, and the tomes, change her specials a bit and have her gain a small percentage of damage every time she uses one, buff the bronze sword, and change her FS. It's an easy way to add her with an unused playstyle into the game without taking much effort. I can't see Alm having such an easy way into the game though, as he only seems to suit Roy's moveset and then we'd have a clone of a semi-clone, or another Marth semi-clone who uses bows occasionally.
EDIT: Actually, Celica's FS might not need to be changed, as Alm could just be summoned instead. It doesn't work as well as Pair Up, but it does reference their connection to each other, and they don't exactly fight as a pair in their source game but you can target the same enemy and attack after the other one does so it's not that much of a stretch.

1. Fire Emblem Switch's Protagonist: Sounds crazy but Corrin was just as crazy an inclusion, and Fire Emblem wasn't being promoted as hard then as it is now. I'm believing the theory that since Intelligent Systems lost their dev-kit role, all this FE promotion as of late is a kind of compensation for them, so I can see them demanding/requesting another Smash character and I doubt Nintendo's going to let the director say no.
TLDR: Fire Emblem Bias is real.
2. Inklings: I don't think I have to explain why I think they're likely.
3. Isabelle: She's Nintendo's pet basically.
4. Big 3rd party character (Steve?): Both Brawl and Smash 4 had big 3rd party reveals at their reveal, so I'm assuming they'll keep it going in the next installment.
5. Decidueye: This one's just a gut feeling, they could go for Lycanroc/Mimikyu/Tapu Koko/insertpokayman here instead but something's telling me it's going to be Decidueye.
Honorable Mention: Kirby 25th anniversary character, I don't want to :124: it, but if Mr. Sakurai isn't director anymore I think Kirby's going to be getting at least 1 new character, but if he's still deerector I'm expecting absolutely nothing other than a Sakurai-era stage (Fountain of Dreams?).

1. Ice Climbers: Only reason they didn't get in last time was the 3DS version, so I assume there's going to be nothing stopping them this time.
2. Wolf: What's the matter, scared?
3. Snake: My gut feeling tells me Konami's become a tad more sane lately.
4. Young Link: He's like Pichu, but more important.
5. Pichu: He's super easy to work in and is not as unpopular as he's made out to be either.

1., 2., and 3. Dark Matter/Bandana Dee/Jirachi
4. Dr. Eggman
5. Waluigi
Honorable Mention: Pichu

Expectations:

1) Inkling. This is the most clear prediction to me.
2) 7th generation Pokémon. Mimikyu, hopefully.
3) Ice Climbers. There's no reason to leave them hanging. Sakurai can easily fix or come up with a L cancel against chain grabs.
4) Dixie Kong. I can easily see Dixie chosen over K. Rool, sorry to say. She's the most clear third DK rep that generally is likely to happen in the next instalment.
5) Rayman. I can see this happening. Now at this point. He'd blend in enough. I don't a 100% approval though. I don't see Rayman's stage blending in right now.

Needs:

1) Ridley. I don't know. I can see this outcome suddenly a 100%. Really. The community has the ingredients and tutorials now. I believe Ridley can just claim his Smash Switch invitation.
2) Mimikyu. I want this. He's ready and anticipating his planning to join. Give me a ghost. I don't need another fire type.
3) Ghirahim. Give me a Zelda rap that isn't always generically serious. But a more thoughtful demon lord with a 2nd appearance and style.
4) Doc Luis. I said everything that needed to be said about this guy. He's brilliant for Smash to me. His design, his personality, his star punch. Let 'em tag in Sakurai.
5) Mach Rider? He's the last character I can think of. I guess I like the idea of a silent rider that can left his bike at a fast enough pace and hit his foes with it. Give me Mach Rider.

I really don't think that the Ice Climbers are marketable as Wolf is, above all things considered. I mean, outside the Smash fanbase, they don't mean much for Nintendo history, and they even don't get much great reputation with their origin game. If they were in the base game (retail releases for 3DS and Wii U), would be another story..

Of course, they're beloved veterans for the Smash community, and their moveset is pretty much irreplaceable.. but that is not enough for selling a 2014 game in a new system as it was a new game for the general public. At very least, Wolf was a in recent release, and probably would be the easiest to put back in the game with Fox custom moves already having some of his moveset.

--But I still stand in the position that, if they're porting the game with a minimum effort like Mario Kart 8, they probably will prefer have few (two) newcomers for a better image than any old characters.

The funny thing about this ordeal, however, is that the Super Mario franchise has pretty much covered all the viable representatives. Sure, people may argue that Toad should be playable too, but that's probably wishful thinking when you take into account that he's been part of Peach's moveset since Melee. On the other hand, Peach could always receive a different special move, and we have seen Charizard and Little Mac gain the playable treatment after appearing as assist characters in the previous Smash Bros. installments.

• Ice Climbers
• Inklings
• Pokemon Rep.
• FE Rep.
• Dixie Kong

If Ice Climbers can function, they are back. Inklings is a popular, new IP. There is always a new pokemon and Fire Emblem rep. A new DK character has been overdue. I have more faith that Dixie will get in than King. K. Rool.

Want:
• King K. Rool
• Ridley
• Andross with a body
• Toad
• Waluigi

Time for some villains... and toad.
