Obviously, it all comes down to personal opinion, but not every unconventional choice for SSB is created equal. I'm fine with going with offbeat elements for the series, I'm just not going to pretend that the likes of Clippy would get anything more than a disinterested shrug from me if it were ever included. Heck if you really want to include something from Windows computers that countless fans likely experienced and might be more practical to include in Smash, have a Pinball Space Cadet stage be unlockable. It's as memorable to (at the time) younger PC users as Solitaire was to older ones and a pinball stage is wholly uncharted territory for SSB anyway.

who would you cut to make room for this
I would use the fairest method of all: I would put all the character's names in a hat and draw one of them randomly. He would be the sacrifice to my neighbor.

will it be a reboot or an ultimate deluxe?
Both. There will be two games at the same time, so that everyone can choose the one he likes the most, or buy the two versions. Also, Sakurai would come to my place and personally offer them to me for my birthday.

Since there is no objection nor counter-argument to my neighbor's inclusion, I am pleased to see that everyone seems on board!

My nomination. This or Spidops. I like spiders.

I really like spiders.
Spidops is honestly something I think would be really fun. I've always liked him despite him being pretty terrible lol. The concept of a slow moving spider (and specifically an ogre spider, of all things) that could have bits of burst movement when diving forward with its webs between its "hands" could be really neat. Add in various moves for stage control like Silk Trap and Sticky Web, as well as the weirdly high amount of Fighting moves it gets like Circle Throw and Low Kick, and I think it could be really fun.

You know, having thought about more today, I'm revising my earlier statement. I actually wouldn't mind seeing in Clippy in Smash...

...as part of an optional tutorial/help aspect in the Create a Stage/Create a Mii mode. Like you're making a level with stone platforms and lava and a Smashified version of Clippy appears and says, "It looks like you're trying to make a Bowser's Castle stage, would you like some help with that?"

It would be a cute nod to older players that remembered the character and would pay an appropriate tribute to the role Clippy played in various Windows programs. Depending on how you interpret it, you could even view their inclusion as a bit of self-aware humor on Nintendo's part, recognizing the criticism of their own excessive tutorials/unwanted tips in their own games. Having Clippy in that way turns it from a concept I'd be tempted to sigh at to an idea that I'd be more inclined to just be impressed at just for having an odd but oddly logical deep cut like that.

Btw i dont know if im to late but even tho TheZizz said some wrong/weird things like calling sora a femboy please keep in mind that hes only one person who might be autistic, young or something like that!
Also its very easy to say dumb stuff if youre arguing against like 10 people!
So please if you wanna argue with him take turns or just try to guess his emotional state from his answers!
So TheZizz TheZizz everythings fine but maybe try wording yourself better next time!

Also anyone who blocked him maybe unblock him in like a month or a year people can change or just learn online conversation better!

I think Dragon Quest is the Square-Enix series with the best representation, by dint of Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts' representation being kinda subpar
I mean, it's the only one really allowed to use the whole franchise, atleast partially.

FF is stuck with using content from VII exclusively, and KH can't use the Disney related content beyond a teeny reference to mickey.

I mean, Dragon Quest is still a little weird in terms of representation. The most iconic track from the series isn’t in the game, there’s no remixes and there’s not as many spirits as either other SE series. I guess it might be the best by default if the lack of any non-FF7 music or spirits is a problem for you but I think it suffers from the same problems as Kingdom Hearts and Final Fantasy representation wise

I'd like to see Clippy in Smash, if only to clown on all the Sans-supporters in a way Plant Gang clowned on all the Assist-voided Nintendo-picks like Isaac back in the day.

Anyway, I feel this might be a spicy take:

I honestly do feel like it'd be pretty refreshing to see Smash axe most, if not ALL 3rd Parties entirely from SSB6 or any further installments from that in the future. Mostly because I think Smash having widened it's reach to so many of them has made the 3rd Parties feel more and more of a crutch to series today, specifically on being the primary fuel towards Smash getting carried hard by it's "hype culture" (and to some, the big reveals in them being the real main draw of the series) - whilst forcing Smash Bros to bear a frankly lofty, impossible task of having to carry as much "videogaming history" on it's back.
This kind of much focus and preference on 3rd Parties over the years has caused unfortunate shift in bias against 1st or 2nd party requests or suggestions within the fanbase. (Bandanna Dee still being called a "Goomba with a hat" regarding a series that has had generic Mario mook at it's finest on the roster for seven years now.)

I really would prefer having the series return more back to its roots of mainly exploring Nintendo's history again for those reason - as that'd help temper people's expectations majorly now that they can't mainly or even solely focus on their big 3rd Party to be able to duke it out with other big or culturally iconic VG stars stuffed in one game (YMMV) - and thus avoid the "hype creep" that Ultimate's embraced on itself to a fault. Because often it feels like entirety of modern Smash-fanbase have forgotten, or now despise the idea of Smash returning to being a "Nintendo-centric" crossover over a "Videogame Hall of Fame - The Game" these days.

I think it'd then lead above be an interesting litmus test on "Do people care Smash Bros for it's original Nintendo crossovers, or are they here only for 3rd Party clashes?" - because there's still some chance that the popularity of 3rd Parties during cuts could pose an awful kind of precedence on some of the less prominent IPs in Smash currently, incase negotiating many of them back ends easier than expected, but roster size couldn't really reach Ultimate's levels.

Finally and it's prolly most biased point towards this: I think it'd finally force exploration of currently overlooked or deemed-too-obscure parts of Nintendo's history or fan requests, which'd help introduce people to them more than they currently are right now. Takamaru for example could be finally come out of the benches of such criteria, and maybe revisiting Ayumi Tachibana wouldn't be too far behind.
(Assist Trophies used to work well for introducing lesser IPs of Nintendo in Brawl, but have IMO lost that novelty since Smash 4, and are given less damn about over indie reps like Sans being included as a Mii Costume these days.)

I think I've said this before, but "all of gaming: the game" and "Nintendo all-stars: the game" are both equally valid approaches. The thing I don't like is a weird, awkward middle ground. Smash is general is really big on compromise and I ain't a fan of it.

Very much agreed. I feel like I think this balanced around Smash 4's time with Post-SSB4 DLC - it's just when Ultimate came in with it's Fighter Passes mainly that the shift became most egregious. I honestly believe both can't co-exist together without somehow cannibalizing one or the other, in this case 3rd Parties taking focus and spotlight away from Nintendo-characters primarily in DLC, and perhaps even base roster at times incase they'll be given even more such spotlight in SSB4's base roster due FPs being such a success before.

To me back in FP speculation period still vying for Dixie and to lesser extent, Toad - it really started to put in this meaningless, even bone-headed air around the idea that we'd see them finish with just about anyone than what they ended with - and that was after having to sit through so many 3rd Parties in hopes of maybe seeing my and/or others' wanted 1st or 2nd Party Nintendo-character outside of the ones we got from three promoted IPs from Nintendo's end.

Of course that reminding me how things ended with Byleth, which further proves my point on Nintendo-chars not feeling ideal to put as last choice on an FP, but it also means they kinda never had chances, or were that unfavored in first place back in Ultimate's DLC era. :025:

In anycase, I really think we could do with a spinoff or just an entirely new branch of platformer fighter/fighting game dedicated to 3rd Party clashes in the future, that has all the freedom and dedication to explore such concept with full collaboration from all companies involved this time.

Wanting a character for the sole purpose of making fun of other disappointed fans? Really? If this is true, this is probably the only reason for wanting a character that I cannot respect.

I'm mainly doing a tongue-in-cheek joke to the times I had to shift through such posts in social media and artworks about Plant and how it was used to clown on all the people like me having been rallying for any of the deconfirmed-to-npc characters prior to its reveal. (Yeah, I can get pretty salt-laced.)

Still, to tell the truth: even if I'm pretty dang sure we'd never see Clippy happen - I'd never do such a thing above. That's furthest of a thing I'd ever do.

It's just unfortunate to know that there will be folks that'd be doing such mockery though, considering the history of this fandom... :drshrug:

Not to zombify this whole Clippy thing, but what does Clippy even have to do with Sans? Where did you get that connection? In general, Sans seems to be a magnet for weird nonsensical comparisons even though he's a character with a TON of viable - and coherent - alternatives and counters, ranging from characters in his own game; characters from the games that inspired him; other indies; other zoomer-meme characters... Yet I always see "Don't do Sans, do Bomberman instead!" for example as if those characters are remotely attached in any way. I see this with Waluigi sometimes too. It's giving TLOU2 vs. SpongeBob TBH.

Anyway, Mettaton or Undyne is the better UT rep regardless.

Also, on toxicity: I'm gonna say it again. Blame Nintendo. Even if you don't agree that trailers and character-specific marketing cause toxicity, can we at least agree that Sakurai (or his translator) says and shows some stupid bull**** sometimes in marketing and needs someone with better knowledge of Smash theorycrafting to pull him in? I'm gonna bring this up again: there's no excuse for posting this in a Ridley-poisoned speculation scene without a Ridley behind your back to present.
Screenshot 2025-03-23 080157.png

And similarly, there was no excuse for these, especially the Waluigi post after ATs had already gained a negative reputation through Brawl. Same with the way Waluigi was revealed for Ult, "on-character" or not. It's not trolling, it's just tone-deafness.
You're really blaming the wrong culprit here. Smash has a history of mishandling Assist Trophy reveals and outwardly presenting them as disappointing or inferior, really there needs to be a shift in marketing for dunk-posting to cease to be on a major scale, both hyping up ATs more and piping down the hype around playable characters. They should seriously be taking notes from how the echo fighter name was recieved and reconsider how their marketing effects the fandom.

I'm honestly amazed that Clippy is seriously being discussed here. This really shouldn't have gone as far as it did. Apparently it counts as an unpopular opinion too, so here it is.

Maybe this is me being British speaking, but a lot of 1P Smash discourse in relation to "iconic factor" feels like "game 10 people played vs. game 5 people played". I don't think the difference between Metroid and Chibi-Robo in popularity is all too significant.

I appreciate your perspective. Where I come from "femboy" means "feminine boy" before it got co-opted into some kind of misnomer with whatever this extra stuff is. Unless Sora himself denies being a femboy it's not wrong to point it out, that his English VA indicates he is well into puberty and thus his immaculate cuteness is an anomaly bearing such a noteworthy observation.

Of course consensus is how language works. This applies on both a macro and micro scale (global vs local ie. "local dialects"). It may be poor form to impose (or dispose) meaning on words as a "guest" in a foreign habitat such as the "rainbow alliance" to which I hold no allegiance. (In the 90s saying "don't label me!" was the order of the day.) However as far as the smash community I am a self-designated elder council, though I do recognize that the incel to trans pipeline is disproportionately represented here. And as you might have guessed, I am routinely "challenged" in every sense of the word. First and foremost I'm beset on all sides by an amalgamation that would sooner see me ingest pesticide than my precious empathy tonic, but that is ten degrees neither here nor there.

Game on.

hmm he certainly seemed to dunk on Chrom for not getting in during 4. in fact I still feel like he was getting dunked on in ultimate

Anyway, the word you're looking for is bisho(u)nen. Sora, Link, even the Heroes, they all fall under that umbrella, no extra implications about it.

The statement about twisting the meaning of words is universally applicable

Androgyny explicitly infers an uncommonly prominent feminine aspect (in males). We're splitting hairs here

Words form sentences which form paragraphs to link multiple facets of a conversation. It takes two listeners to have a dialogue, and I'm admittedly a poor listener myself, historically. Let's learn together? 👍

My genuine bad. I guess I wanted to use the material from last major discussion (which I was kind of amazed to have become debated that much, shame I kinda wasn't there...) to make a little joke in vein of what I've been observing Smash-fandom being to me.

Speaking of:

Not to zombify this whole Clippy thing, but what does Clippy even have to do with Sans? Where did you get that connection? In general, Sans seems to be a magnet for weird nonsensical comparisons even though he's a character with a TON of viable - and coherent - alternatives and counters, ranging from characters in his own game; characters from the games that inspired him; other indies; other zoomer-meme characters... I wondered what character was often touted as a huge shoe-in and incredicly popular on top of that in Smash-fandom, and went for Sans to do the whole "Me making fun of a character highly expected or rallied in next Smash getting their 'slot' taken over by some sort of beyond unexpected wild choice". Other Nintendo-characters or even 3rd Parties didn't really feel much in same vein for such joke. :dizzy:

Maaaybe I might have been a little tasteless.

Also, on toxicity: I'm gonna say it again. Blame Nintendo. I kinda tried to avoid discussing Sakurai or Nintendo at large regarding this again over the fans and fandom, as I felt it'd be yelling to a wall of a giant HQ building about something they won't care about addressing or even seeing as a problem so far.

I mean so far Sakurai hasn't ever bothered addressing the way his "jokey" or "ridiculing" (YMMV on if it's mock-ridiculing or genuine) nature of talking about characters like in the examples above, had led to Smash's fandom culture essentially adopt it for their meme/fandom jokes in varying degrees of intensity based on how the director revels on it time to time too - while most likely validated people doing it specifically for mocking fans of characters sincerely. (The treatment of Geno and his Geno-fans post-Sephiroth's reveal, as much as loud they might have been, since they've been playing the ball-game since Brawl - and the memetic loserfication of Chrom since Robin's reveal which Sakurai decided to throw more fuel to the fire later, if not some bit in Robin's reveal trailer.)

As you said, tone-deafness.

Though again, you have a point that as long as Sakurai and Nintendo keep doing it, it's bit weird to ask fandom to not join in and/or demand them to stop. Maybe this is just part of Smash Bros nature in general.

:tired:

Which is why this is one of the other personal reasons for me to want Sakurai to give his directorial seat to someone else.

It'd be very refreshing air after being part of Sakurai's wild ride for so long, and not getting to voice personal irritation or even bit of embitterment over his brand of humor or characterizations without being dismissed as some sort of "toxic/pathetic/salty hater on poor director who's working off his health just to bring us these games in form they can be" - even if I have to sit through more memey reveling on characters I came to like prior thanks to Smash reducing them to such jokes (:ultchrom::ultdaisy:). Ditto for my friends having been fans of Ridley long prior before Ultimate.

(Reminds me, I reaalllllllly hope Sakurai's new project he's been discussing about is NOT Smash Bros-related, I miss seeing him bring us more original projects gravely).

Long story short, I could start pushing for "aquarius rights" and see who thinks it isn't a tremendous waste of time and energy at best, and intersectional thinking beyond that. Comparing unit types is fun, and just that, for fun. When it gets serious is where things get ugly, that's the most basic I can explain it at my current level .shrug

"Cutting to the chase" as it were. Labels on people save time and are reductive in all other regards except For Fun to see who else shares the same differences from the rest 💥. My ultimate end is one humanity. In Smash Bros, there are some (variably) similar characters but all share the same roster. Let a go! :luigimelee: wahoo! :75M:

that makes no sense, you’re saying labels are both good and bad at the same time? Has it ever occurred to you that people like to pick their own labels?

Differences and cultures - "labels" as some may call them - are what make us human. To acknowledge a difference is not to condemn a difference. We do share a planet, and our cultures are always overlapping and melting together, but ultimately we are a diverse species, and that should be celebrated. War; opression; and strife are not sourced from differences, they come from the desire to erase differences, or sweep them under the rug and assume they're simply cosmetic as oppossed to impacting one's every moment in some subtle way.

Of course, I happen to think it's a limiting belief to do so (human beings are mind bogglingly much more than the most grandiose label that anyone could muster in a thousand lifetimes) but keep them off me or else I just might dub thee "aquarius-phobe" and have all the same basis

War; opression; and strife are not sourced from differences, they come from the desire to erase differences, or sweep them under the rug and assume they're simply cosmetic as oppossed to impacting one's every moment in some subtle way.
You parsed all that from "one humanity"? I'm the first to enjoy differences in people. Even (especially?) among those of the same culture. Differences are beautiful just the same. Great observation 👍

I read this thread is a groggy morning haze and briefly thought there was an argument about Clippy being a femboy.

Anyway, regarding entirely different Smash matters, I would be perfectly fine with having asymmetrical amount of alternate colors/costumes for fighters. Make sure there's at least 8 for everyone, but some characters lend themselves to different looks more than others. Like I don't think Wario having 16 choices and Mr. Game & Watch having 8 is inherently unfair, just an acknowledgement that there's more one can do with the former appearance wise.
