I really hate this framing. It implies that because something has never happened, it was never on the table and therefore will never be (even though there have been references to these games in Mario Kart outside the playable cast so I don't think it was ever as unreasonable as this fandom has spun it as, except maybe in the Wii U era when Mario was at its peak of safeness).

Just because something has historically not happened yet, doesn't inherently make it not an "egregious omission." That is a subjective term and it's not tied to what Nintendo has historically done. In my personal opinion, representation for these games have been egregious omissions since the very start. And I'm sad that most of the fandom seems not only fine with that, but actively looks down on people who want to look toward a future where these characters ARE on the table. In a sense, the fandom's acceptance of these characters never appearing are helping ensure there's never enough vocal demand for Nintendo to ever reconsider it. I think a more comprehensive Marioverse roster is worth pushing for.
If it hasn't happened after eight mainline entries, then yes, its absence fails to be egregious in the ninth entry. At that point a precedent has been firmly established, and the absence should be expected, even if not welcomed. I'd love to see Vivian get into the Kart series as much as anybody, but it's always been a bridge further than what the team seems willing to do. So yeah, calling the absence of Wario-related or RPG characters "egregious" while complaining about Mario enemies getting in (which was what this whole thing was about) when the series has always featured enemy characters rings hollow.

I was never complaining about the enemy inclusions. If anything to me they prove that nothing is too weird or unprecedented.

The reluctance to do extended Marioverse representation will be egregious to me no matter how long it continues to last for. I see no good reason for it, so I see no good reason the fandom should essentially shrug and roll with it and talk dismissively about the idea of seriously supporting it changing (I firmly believe that this nihilistic dismissive mindset preventing them from having a strong presence in discourse, combined with the great reset they did on the Mario brand in the 2010s, plays a key role in why it hasn't happened yet. If they'd continued on the path they were on as of Super Sluggers, these characters would very likely have made their debut by now)

There's a working theory that you can recruit NPCs from the world to become racers, which explains why so many newcomers seem to also be stage hazards (Goomba, Pokey, Sidestepper, Cataquack, Moo Moo, Fish Bone, Snowman, etc).

I believe this theory is correct and am so confident in it that I'm fully expecting one of the big reveals of the upcoming Mario Kart direct to be that Thwomp is a playable character.

He is the Mario Kart stage hazard. There's no way he's getting left out of this party of zany Mario enemies coming together for the ultimate race.
If this ends up being true, than the hypothetical Animal Crossing DLC could be PACKED with characters, just going off the MK8 course.

I would hope so, but... we've gone so many games without E. Gadd at this point, I'm kinda worried it might not ever happen at this rate.
This is gonna sound weird but I legitimately think all it'd take is someone at Next Level Games (the guys in charge of luigi's mansion rn) asking the Kart devs to add him. The reason the Mario World seems so segmented likely just stems from a desire to avoid stepping on other team's toes.

You can probably say the same thing for the WarioWare characters, since pretty much all of them have only appeared in the games that Intelligent Systems developed. But then again, Waluigi first appeared in a game that Camelot developed, but managed to become a recurring spin-off character.

Been thinking about the topic of how post-launch free updates and DLC should be handled (controversial as that latter subject is, given the already steep price), especially since this'll probably replace MK8 and Tour as the game that's going to be milked for a decade+ before the ACTUAL "next MK"...

First off given all the content this game seems to have at launch, I think the dreaded "nintendo relies on free updates to finish the game" thing from the Switch era would actually work much better here since... this already looks like a "complete game" anyways. What said updates would entail, I don't know, it'd probably be things like more costumes and even more odd character additions that they couldn't fit into a DLC pack.

...Which brings me to my hope for how actual paid DLC should be handled. For one, they need to be beefy, gotta justify whatever price it has somehow. The wait between all them can be pretty long for all I care, they just need to feel "worth it" for me. I want both a bunch of characters and a substantial map expansion in each one.

But here's the fun thing I'm hoping for: I want the packs to be themed, mainly around specific Mario games. I think the Direct in a couple weeks will reveal the full roster of racers and courses (in the event of "oh surprise that's not the whole map!"), which might change my views and hopes, but say this game doesn't have a lot of characters from the Galaxy games, Odyssey, Wonder, etc. Well, why not have these huge packs themed around them? Make the map expansions add their distinct locales (or places that look close enough to them), and have character expansions that focus on that game's/series' side characters.

And if they come back to crossovers with other Nintendo franchises, treat them the same and go all the way as well. I don't want just Isabelle popping up in an otherwise Mario-themed pack again; if you're doing Animal Crossing, Zelda, Splatoon, etc., go the same route with them as this roster's doing and pull out all the stops with their side characters.

For the mainline games then it’s not because Nintendo has anything against Waluigi but more because Nintendo in general is selective on who appears. Although he is a costume in Odyssey.

An example is how Modern Donkey Kong hasn’t appeared physically in a mainline Mario game. Although the arcade original version appears in Odyssey as a 2D sprite. DKC is still referenced in the latter such as many of the names in New Donk City and one of the Mario costumes.

Wario hasn’t appeared in a mainline Mario game since 64 DS, Daisy’s mainline appearances are more recent other than Mario Land, Regular Shy Guy only really appears in SMB2 (although Fly Guy is in 64) and same with Birdo.

Waluigi is also a costume in Super Mario Maker, another mainline entry(Wario also cameos the same way, so he isn't absent).

...Super Mario Run is a mainline entry, so that's Daisy's last mainline appearance too.

I get they're odd to be labeled that, but Nintendo can be odd on what counts anyway. And they're both regular platforming games, so it's not thaaaaaat odd.

Waluigi was a pretty special case, Nintendo seemed oddly invested in his creation, potentially because they REALLY liked the idea of giving Wario a Luigi.

There's also the fact that Mario Tennis 64 set the standard for mario spinoff rosters.
