The Palworld suit is going to fail if it reaches trial because the patent is almost certainly not valid. Nintendo is going after PocketPair for having Legends Arceus' PokeBall throwing mechanic, which they have a patent for. However, early footage of PalWorld shows the mechanic's implementation in that game prior to the patent's registration. The process you are patenting needs to be kept confidential to be properly registered. Ergo, the process Nintendo was trying to patent never had this required element and the patent is invalid.

The most likely explanation is Nintendo is playing litigation chicken. Dealing with a legal claim, even when you're in the right, is absurdly expensive. Nintendo has the resources to sustain a long court battle, PocketPair don't. Nintendo is likely hoping PocketPair will want to settle quickly and they can get some money before the merits of the matter are heard.

None of this really affects Smash, though. Nintendo was never on good terms with PocketPair and Sony and Nintendo really only get along in the face of what they deem external threats (e.g. Bleem in the '90s). It's not like people were clamouring for Pals or any characters owned by Sony (beyond maybe Kratos).

Yep, it is.
Ooh goody another collection of Nintendo IPs to speculate on. Because Alarmo and the Nintendo Museum wasn't enough!

Mario, Splatoon, Animal Crossing, Zelda, that's pretty standard. Pikmin's not quite as big as the others, but Nintendo's been pretty intent on pushing them as mascots, so they make sense. No Pokemon, but they're co-owned by The Pokemon Company and aren't usually featured with other Nintendo stuff beyond Smash because of that.

Metroid and Donkey Kong are interesting, though. Metroid's been on the upswing ever since Dread, but it's not quite as big as the Big Four or even Kirby in terms of marketing or sales. And Donkey Kong's still fairly active as a Mario sub-series, but in terms of actual DK-focused games we've only gotten a couple remasters from the very beginning and end of the Switch's lifespan.

WAIT, THAT'S REAL?! WHAT THE ****?!
THE NINTENDO MUSIC

Look at the bright side.

They didn't lock it behind a new Expansion Expansion Pack. :4pacman:
Just you wait for
"With Nintendo Music Premium, you can extend songs for up to two hours, and listen to the soundtracks from even more classics like Ice Hockey and Tennis!"

I saw Pokemon game boxes and heard Pokemon music in the video.

Honestly even as a Donkey Kong fan I think their appearance here has less to do with possible prominence and more recognition that the franchise consistently has excellent music that even non/casual fans appreciate.

That's true, but I kinda wonder why we don't have Kirby or Fire Emblem up there. They've been selling pretty dang well on the Switch, and their soundtrack also gets pretty strong praises, so they have a pretty good claim to being pictured up there. I wonder if it's because IntSys and HAL are technically distinct from Nintendo? But even so, I'd imagine they would be easier to negotiate things with than TPC. Hmm...

Looking at the app now, one of the "Find Your Favorites" selections for me is Kirby Star Allies.

The "All Games" in the search section gives me New Horizons, Scarlet and Violet, Splatoon 3, Pikmin 4, Star Allies, Odyssey, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Breath of the Wild, Mario Galaxy, Wii Channels, Tomodachi Collection, nintendogs, Metroid Prime, Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade, Ocarina of Time, Star Fox 64, Yoshi's Island, Donkey Kong Country, Kirby's Dream Land, Dr. Mario, Metroid (both NES and Famicom versions), and Super Mario Bros.

Ok it does in fact exist in the UK. The music selection is... kinda disappointing so far, it feels like one of those youtube channels that tries to upload every nintendo soundtrack but gives up after a few. Having both versions of the original metroid ost is cool at least, and I'm not gonna complain about having the BOTW, metroid prime and scarlet/violet osts properly.

Huh, so it's probably not from a lack of access.

Maybe it's aiming for a Western audience? Metroid historically does better in the West than Japan, and I'd imagine DK has a solid Western following too, seeing as the DKC games are usually made by Western devs. Meanwhile, Kirby and Fire Emblem usually skew a bit more to Japan, even if they also have decent Western fanbases. I wonder if the Japanese trailer has a different banner?

The pokemon ost is missing the Ed Sheeran songs - I wasn't expecting the main version but the Toby Fox remix would've been cool.

Also it is so weird hearing these songs in such a high quality. Praying they add a lot more songs, and soon.

Honestly I think the biggest surprise to me about this whole is that nintendogs was a first choice for this platform, like out of all the DS games they have, the ones they picked are nintendogs and Tomodachi COLLECTION.

Not Tomodachi LIFE, Tomodachi COLLECTION, which was Japan exclusive lol

It also looks like some music might be sorta tucked into related playlists? Like the Star Allies page has all of the regular base game music, but the Dream Friend themes for fighting Morpho Knight are tucked into the Dream Friends Go playlist and the extra Void Termina themes are in The Ultimate Choice playlist.

I know because I was looking for Susie's Morpho Knight theme to see what its real name was, and it's apparently "A Deus Ex Machina from Childhood"

So the playlist on the main page is just the top hits playlist. If you click on the game itself, you'll find an option to list all tracks.

Speaking of, Kirby Star Allies is an absolutely brilliant first game to include for Kirby. Especially since it includes all the morpho and star ally go songs.

Will keep an eye out for more tracks tucked into playlists.

Also, it looks like the 2017 Switch Presentation Trailer and E3 2014 trailer music for Breath of the Wild is included. I don’t believe either have ever been released, although Smash got a remix of the Switch Presentation theme.

Yeah honestly, since the Dream Friends mean it includes the remixes of like Hyper Zone, Zero-Two, the Squeak Squad theme, Robobot's final boss, etc etc etc.

This was on the OST, not certain about the other song?

Also good god the in-game music in scarlet and violet was also unfinished lmao. Unless I'm going mad there's just whole different arrangements for some songs (certainly new instruments added).

EDIT: I know some soundtracks do this anyway (it is very noticeable in SMT V), but it isn't just alternate mixes or different instrumentation for the ost, this is just better versions of the same songs.

I've been asking for something like the Nintendo Music app for a long time. It's got a lot of good features too - the extension feature is a game changer, and spoiler prevention is a nice bonus.

However, there's only like...20 games on there right now.

I really don't want this to be like other NSO things where they drip-feed content across multiple years. I'd kill to have other Pokemon or Kirby games on there personally.

I still don’t see it on the IOS App Store :217:
For Apple users, Use this link.
I just used this link and then copied it into my phone and allowed it to open it in the app store lol

It's a US link though, so might not work for everyone.

EDIT: Small aside, but Pokemon is being weird on this thing like they usually are, and Pokemon tracks can't be extended manually, at least the ones I tried lol

Also Sakurai apparently quote tweeted the announcement of the music app and translating his text gives you "Finally!" Just thought that was really funny lol

Nintendo's refusal to use normal streaming services is still incredibly confusing to me

Basically every other major game developer has embraced them

they would not lose anything (although they actually would lose something due to how little spotify pays)

and are already inconsistent with things like Xenoblade soundtracks being on Itunes as well as some Kirby and Non-game pokemon stuff being on spotify

And they probably don't have that much profit to gain from this current system either since you don't pay extra for Spotifytendo.

Most people who would want this already spend the 20 bucks a year for basic online play.

Proof that Monolith and HAL are cool.

I'm not giving credit to Game Freak until we see a game from them that doesn't feel rushed.

I get the feeling this isn't about money, at least not directly. They want people on their nso ecosystem, and including a (genuinely really well made) music service is absolutely going to bring people in. Spotify can't do that for them.

Ok quick question: does anyone know where the composer credits are located when you load a song on the app?

...because given Nintendo's recent history of outright refusing to say who develops their new games, I'm getting the sinking feeling that the music app ain't giving credit to even people like Koji ****ing Kondo.

That feeling is correct.

The app doesn't credit anyone other than Nintendo themselves.

There's times where I question why I even give this giant toy company the time of day, much less enough attention to speculate about their upcoming releases.

By god, this is one of those increasingly common times.

Quick edit: I swear, if the ****s running the company had their way we wouldn't even know that people like Miyamoto and Aonuma exist.

The music thing and the company thing are two very different issues. While I don't know why Nintendo hasn't been giving credit to musicians in regards to already-made music, the absolute certain reason why Nintendo doesn't talk about who is developing their games until the game is released is definitely because of easily disgruntled people frickin' hounding the makers and insulting their workers.

Nah, we would. We'd need to do a ****ton of digging to learn about them instead of them being faces of the marketing but we would.

.....unless Nintendo's making a remake of one of their old games and they didn't work on it in which case they would go completely uncredited :4pacman:

All I know is I really hope this thing gets updates really frequently since it's just putting pre-made music on an app. The opt-in notifications say they'll let you know when new stuff gets added, so it feels like it might be quicker than usual, but we'll have to wait and see.

AND ALSO PUT RHYTHM HEAVEN MUSIC ON IT QUICK BECAUSE IT'S LITERALLY ALL ABOUT MUSIC

ahem pardon me

Theeeeeere's the catch. There's always a catch with anything Nintendo puts out.

It's not enough to just be thorough and include everything that makes sense, there always has to be one monkey's-paw-esque flaw with their services.
