Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

But Tifa has two big reasons why she should be in Smash. :V

The fact she's almost as iconic as Cloud himself and because she's a kickass brawler chick, which we don't currently have in Smash. If she and Chun-Li both made it, they'd be the perfect team.
....what did you think I was going to say? Get your minds out of the gutter, people. :troll:
I immediately though the other two things. I must have a dirty mind...

Good joke regardless.

I think Smash should have a Music Maker mode where you create custom music to play on your custom stages. This way, we could have Guile's Theme, One Winged Angel, etc. in Smash.
I figure they haven't done something like that specifically because they don't want players importing content into the game.

Person A: "We spent time to negotiate and money to finally secure these music tracks! We also made some new remixes!"

Person B: "Don't bother, you just wasted your time. Players can just import the original tracks, fan remixes and any other music they want on their own."

Sure modding is a thing, but that's not something endorsed by Nintendo and requires a lot more work than if it were a built in feature.

Your guess is as good as mine
Even though there were just some complaints about "nameless" template/avatar characters, I'd actually like that from Final Fantasy as well. However, I'd like a Red Mage, though one that's not specifically referred to as a Red Mage.

A character with access to multiple types of magic but not strictly a Red Mage because I want them to have a Red Mage, Black Mage, and White Mage costume to represent multiple classes with one character. :p

As for the music, I think Uematsu is likely just expensive. Same with how SEGA has to pay out good money to use classic tracks like Green Hill Zone due to high royalties or whatever from the composer.

I felt the same way about Suzaku Castle as well. I love the remixes of Ryu and Ken's themes, but I was hoping we'd get more than just those two.

And now with Ultra Street Fighter II we got even more fantastic remixes they could use.
We have a Red Mage, they're called Robin:troll:
Honestly though, a red mage would be great, they could have a dualcast gimmick and everything.
I's say Terra is a good candidate for using all types of magic. She has access to an quite a variety of them in her own game anyway, including Holy, the typical fire/blizzard/thunder magic, and magic unique to her game like Meltdown and Riot Blade.
I never actually considered the cost of the music, now the lack of 3rd party songs is completely understandable.

Which is why Nintendo should just let people create music in games with Music Maker... it could be like making music in Mario Paint.

A lot of companies are stingy about copyrights. Say you do this, then upload a video with a song you made that's basically, say, MMPR's theme. Saban might get mad. Sadly, this alone may kill the idea. If it was simply just "you can't use this music online", no issues. But not when you can upload your playthroughs...

Companies like that remind me of Lisa Simpson telling her mother she plays with her tree when Marge told her that Lisa doesn't even play with her tree after getting a tree.

Sad, but true. Nintendo pretty much doesn't allow us to upload music to their games, so it's more them than the other companies. Not that the other companies aren't annoying about it.

The reason why such a feature doesn't exist, however, is to avoid potential copyright infringement issues with other companies.

I'm thinking, given that 4's DLC cycle showed we were fools to even guess, what Cloud level upsets could happen?

Mr Steve Minecraft in Smash?
Konami realises that Snake in Smash would be free money (for them)?
Marth is cut from the roster?

What crazy thing on the edge of your mind do you think may happen? (you fool)

Sakurai finally loses his mind and adds himself to the game.

I kid, I kid.

I could see Nester from Nintendo Power getting in, or anybody that Nintendo owns but isn't a Video Game character.

Or maybe something that ORIGINATED in Smash like a Fighting Polygon, or a Primid.

I could see the first two happening, but cutting :4marth:is actually too off the wall crazy, even for Sakurai. Mostly because he likes the character and there's literally no reason to cut him.

As for crazy upsets that are crazy, but still just crazy enough to work:

-He finally works out a design for a playable Ridley that he's okay to sign off on to include in the game.

-He works his Sakurai magic to get Crash and/or Banjo into Smash Bros.

-He goes against the expectation of one character per third party series and adds another Sonic/Street Fighter/Final Fantasy/Mega Man/Pac Man character.

-He adds an indie character or possibly multiple well known indies (Shantae/Shovel Knight/Quote?) due to being relatively cheap to acquire.

-He adds another more risque character like Asuka from Senran Kagura

-He adds tripping again as a mode for Special Smash

-He makes another Subspace Emissary style adventure mode despite his issues with the original

-He doubles down on Smash Tour and either makes it super good, or even worse

The craziest idea? Probably that he actually adds in Hatsune Miku as a fighter. I'd love to see the reaction to that.
or an enemy mode where you play as one of the enemies from Smash Run.

It's one thing when you remix a BGM track that belongs to Nintendo, but when you add 3rd party companies to the mix, then things could turn ugly.
I'm not talking about remixing music. I'm talking about composing music like you do in Mario Paint. You could compose third-party music in Mario Paint if you know which sprites to use and know where to place those sprites on the music sheet.

Id much rather get full, actual versions of the songs than ****ty Mario Paint-esque versions. It just seems like a waste.

Honestly it sounds kind of crazy.

On the one hadn, if it gives poor options, no one will bother with it

If it's really in depth, a lot of people are still probably going to ignor it for being too much work AND it will be too much work for the devs to make.

Im sure there would be no legal issues. It's more of a "is it worth it" kind of deal. I wouldnt mind it being added

If we're talking creators we need a better stage creator dammit

Yes... we all want that... but if Nintendo doesn't want to pay for the right to use third party music, then at least they should allow the fans to recreate third party music with a Music Maker mode.

In addition to that I was really hoping for JENOVA, Hear the Cry of the Planet and Crazy Motorcycle Chase. Especially the last one just to have :4wario2::4wario:vs:4cloud::4cloud2: team matches to steal the bikes.
I am 100% interested in more Street Fighter and Final Fantasy tracks. OWA, Guile's Theme, The Man With the Machine Gun, Vega(Claw if international, Balrog if JPN.) Theme, Battle on the Big Bridge, and I could go on.

I wouldn't want a Mario Paint-esque feature in the game. I think My Music is fine the way it is.

I am still interested in the Smash Museum (Expanded Vault similar to the Namco Museum on PS1) idea I had mentioned earlier. I already mention talking to NPC's from the respected franchises, feeling like you're actually in the universe you are visiting. I also mentioned about a "Get on with it " option that avoids the museum stuff entirely. think it would also be a cool place for Smash players to cool off. I still think it would be a good idea as long as it is properly executed.

As for "Smash Museum", I'd like ideas on how you guys would imagine a Museum "hall" were such an unlikely idea were to happen? I'd like to know how you would handle the halls handling the history, masterpieces, costume & accessories shop, model viewing, franchise trophy displays, and NPC's you can talk to.

Masterpieces need to be fixed. I don't like the time limits. They should be goal-oriented. Examples:

Super Mario Bros. - you can only play World 1 (there's no warp zone in World 1-2) and the demo ends when you beat Bowser at World 1-4 and then Toad says "thank you Mario but our princess is in the full game".

The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past - Link wakes up, goes to the castle, meet Zelda, and take her to the sanctuary and then the demo ends.

Balloon Fight - you clear a few levels and then collect balloons in the bonus round and then the demo ends.

Donkey Kong - you play only on 75m and the demo ends when you get to the top.

Pac-Man - you play only one maze and the demo ends when you get all the dots.

Super Mario World - you can only play on Yoshi's Island and the demo ends when you defeat Iggy... oh, and you cannot replay the levels you already cleared (it's a demo after all).

I was just sticking to FFVII music since we got Cloud and Midgar, but if we're talking about the FF series as a whole then I agree so much with Man With the Machine Gun. The story isn't the best, and the junction system is broken, but VIII is still my favorite. (Can that get a remake too Squeenix? Probably not...)

If we could get music from across the series, then from 8 I'd take Force Your Way, The Landing, The Extreme, Don't Be Afraid, Premonition, Eyes on Me and of course Liberi Fatali.

Still haven't finished 9 or 10 and it's been ages since I was last playing through them, but the pieces I remember are the Seymour boss music and the regular battle themes for both. I did end up spoiling myself by listening to the final boss theme for 9 and that piece is quite good as well.

The basic battle theme from each entry would probably be a good place to start if they did expand.

As for the Smash Museum, I think that could be a pretty neat idea. I had a sort of similar idea but it was actually converting the trophy shop into a shopping area with multiple shops that you walk around in with your Mii.

Each shop would sell different things and be run by different Nintendo characters.

- You could buy CDs from Barbara the Bat.

- Pauline would run a capsule machine like the old Melee trophy lottery.

- Costumes and colors if we ever got more would be in a shop run by characters from Style Savvy.

- Custom moves could be outright purchased from Anna so you don't have to struggle with receiving them at random.

- Reese from Animal Crossing would run a Re-Tail themed shop where she would buy back any duplicate trophies you might have.

-And least likely of all, I'd like a hall lined with busts and portraits of Sakurai, Iwata, Miyamoto and other developers with short bios on their work.

Going to your suggestions, I guess masterpieces could be handled by some retro characters that may not otherwise be viable for playable fighters. Either that or have each series have a character to be in charge of all masterpieces for that series.

Or maybe even go the SEGA route like their classics on Steam. The way they did it was have the actual menu be a fully modeled room with the actual consoles and a shelf with the game cartridges.

Blathers would be good for handling trophy displays.

A model viewer for the characters isn't something I'd actually thought of since we already have trophies, but I suppose that'd be neat to have as well.

The ideas that alter the game in any way (i.e. are literally CUSTOM demos) are unrealistic, but you're on the right train of thought.

Why things like Toad saying the princess is in the full game or SMW levels being unselectable after beating them once is because Masterpieces are literally the full game but set to a particular starting point, with the time limit serving to stop you from being able to play the full game itself.

Though I agree that the demo should just forcibly end if certain requirements are met as opposed to a time limit. Such requirements being:
-The level(s) that are being showcased are complete
-The player gets a Game Over
-The player attempts to access something they aren't supposed to

That said, an opinion should be backed up with actual reasons, not blind hatred.
Explain to me what exact reasons I need to have the opinion that nameless characters suck? I just hate them, and that's the end of it. I don't have to justify this to you or anyone, it's just an opinion.

I don't appreciate being singled out for having one. If you're getting passive aggressive at me for not agreeing with you then you're a jerk, simple as that. Don't pick on me for thinking differently than you.

I was introduced to Final Fantasy via 8. I like it. I have been attached to Final Fantasy V as my favorite, though.

Anna for a shop is without a doubt, a good call. I thought of Anna, actually multiple instances of Anna, for the Fire Emblem hall in my take of Smash Museum. Obviously, I had or actually will have them differently clothed and hair color like DLC counterparts in FE games.

For Barbara the Bat running a CD shop in your take is a good call as well.

As for the costumes, I made the accessories and costumes for the Miis in mind for showing off to friends in my take of Smash Museum. I thought of my idea this way since I put this in a fan Smash game on Fantendo and in that, costumes on the fighters were already available when the characters are available.

VIII was my first FF as well and I've still been slowly going through VII, IX, X, X-2, and XII. And I've yet to touch the NES/SNES era classics. I've got quite the backlog when it comes to the FF series...

Going back to the main topic though, I think there's room for both displaying your Mii's costume sets and a shop for the actual cast to unlock and buy extra colors and alts. An in-game shop for additional Mii costumes and accessories would be nice as well.

It's more of a minor thing, but one of reasons I thought up so many different shops for music, trophies, costumes, etc. is because you accumulate so much gold in Smash For but then there isn't really anything to spend it on. And overall there wasn't much to unlock or collect outside of the usual trophies. I'm quite fond of unlockable content so I thought the shops would be a good a way to address both the abundance of in-game currency and the lack of meaningful content to spend it on.

The Arcade Bunny from the 3DS Badge Arcade needs to run one of these shops.
What do you think his shop could be though?

Perhaps they could bring badges into Smash Bros. which he could sell along side titles and icons you could use to customize your profile. Make it a player card similar to that of other fighting games like Marvel vs Capcom 3.

Set an icon, a title, allow you to set up to 3 mains, and allow you to customize your card with badges and stickers if they ever bring those back.

How about Nikki from Swapnote?

She could curate the museum and collect fanart submissions to display in a gallery. She'd leave an official comment on each piece of fanart to make it special. You could also unlock official artwork like the posters made by the different guest artists for the DLC characters, and use them to decorate menus and stuff.

Well, for start, you could give some reasons on why you hate them.

As a Zelda detractor myself after ALBW I still give some explanations on why I dropped it when I get asked.

I can see why'd you not want another
But here's the true reason, brother
Ravio can't be topped
So Zelda can be stopped
If Ravio's not returning, why bother?

Kilton comes close to his glory
They both have a similar story
Both striking some deals
With mysterious feels
Though Kilton's feel is just gory

But since this is character discussion
I want to post Smash to avoid repercussion
So here are some moves
To show Kilton's groove
It is made, however, while rushin'

With Neutral B he takes out his made gear
It summons some monsters to fear
Though they can be killed
Their bodies are filled
With parts that are Kilton dear

With Down B he can cook these guts
There are only a few buts
He needs insects, I think
To make his powerful drink
But catching them might make you nuts

With Side B Kilton can do a wonderful thing
With his hammer, loaded with spring
The comboing is a chore
But at strike four
Opppnents that are hit he'll fling

With Up B Kilton just takes out a mop
A recovery deemed to just flop
But when he attaches a balloon
The mop's lightweight's a boon
A vertical flight 'till the pop!

It's so common here it's honestly infuriating. I don't understand why every opinion has to be backed by some deep though process, it's obvious when someone is making a throwaway statement, or actually is trying to start a discussion.

If you don't give a 'decent reason' to feel how you feel, then people here go 'oh well thats not fair to the character/the character's fans' and/or as you said, say passive aggressive stuff like 'I don't see why you think this...' ad verbatim.

If you do happen to give a line of reasoning, it just either A) gets no response at all or B) gets the same responses as you would be gotten anyway. So what's even the point? No one here will change there mind on ANY given topic in that moment anyway, they're literally just goading you on to make you look like a ****, because you don't share ONE opinion with them.

I'm with you though, I don't like name template characters either. I've grown to like Villager, but I still would be preferred Nook.

So, somebody mentioned Masterpieces earlier, and, I don't have any ideas on how to make them better, but I have a few games I want added to the list:

Wario Land

Pokemon Yellow

Super Smash Bros 64

Fire Emblem Genealogy of the Holy War (probably only in Japan)

Super Punch Out!!

Castlevania OR Super Bomberman OR NES Metal Gear.. Depends.

If you put a thought/idea out there in a public forum, you should kind of expect that someone may respond to it. I get just simply disliking something even without having any particular reason you can put your finger on, but if you express that people can still ask you why. Some might just be curious as to why you feel that way. If you don't have a particular answer, or just don't want to get into a discussion on it, just say so.

I know some people get pretty defensive/aggressive over certain things, but just the same I've seen you and Josh as pretty quick to become passive aggressive sometimes as well, even when unprovoked. If you want to vent I suppose that's fine, but when you put yourself out there, you should expect that there'll be others who choose to respond even if you just want to make a throwaway statement. We can't read what's on your mind, just what's in your post.

I get where your frustration is coming from, but these threads are for discussion. If you don't want to start one, then try to be more careful about what you post. You're free to express whatever you like (provided it falls in line with forum rules), but just the same people can respond and express their own dissent to your opinions.

Now I like you two, so I hope I didn't come off as naggy or aggressive myself, but I thought I'd be blunt to keep things brief. (And yet I still made it a somewhat lengthy post because I suck at keeping things concise.)

Moving things back on topic.

This is a pretty interesting idea. What do you have in mind for how they'd collect said fanart for the game?

Holding a contest prior to launch and including the winners in-game? Starting up a community where anyone can post what they like similar to Miiverse? It'd be a neat way to interact with and involve the fans, but I'm curious as to how they'd handle something like that.

(you fool)
I think that's what I liked about SSB4 newcomers. Sure, most of them were leaked but it's pretty crazy how they actually got in Smash despite how unlikely we thought they would be.
