Official Smash Ultimate Discussion

Almost one month has passed since release. In retrospect....

  • This is by far the best Smash ever. Like, I don't even know how they will top this.

  • Pretty freakin' good; I have a few qualms over things like internet play, balancing issues, etc.

  • It's ok, but [insert Smash game here] is better.

  • I'd rather play Parcheesi.

It's nowhere near as much as Brawl's. But yeah, that's what made the great song lose some luster, the extreme amount of remixes.

As for unlockables, I think characters are done just right. Both are good options(unique unlock or VS matches).

I do agree the Special Smash could use way more options, though. Also, I miss Melee's version of Handicap mode. Felt really neat. The new one is... too simplistic and less interesting as a result. Not that it isn't a proper Handicap in all sense of the term. Also, am I the only one here who misses Bonuses?
NOR4U is still the best term from smash not used enough.

I shouldn't have said graphics and more so "art style." The graphics in Melee just look OK to me, but I think Melee had a better art style than Brawl. I will not defend Yoshi though; he looks bad in Melee.
Brawl had some fun stages, but there were some pretty bad ones like New Pork City, Mario Bros., and 75m.
I will probably never understand what people/gamers have against Yoshi's look in Melee.

Melee has the most awkward art style in my opinion- after all, it was a launch window title, when developers at Nintendo were only starting to grasp more detailed 3D models, and it shows. So many character designs look outdated and a lot of expressions just look stiff.

Yoshi's not a huge offender, but his model does look "off" to me. DK is the worst offender in my book. And I'll never understand why people like Melee Fox or Melee Falco's design.

I'll give that Brawl's muddy art style isn't that suited to Smash, but at least it had a more focused direction and characters looked much less awkwardly modeled/designed than in the Melee days.

At least those were done right and didn't bug your ears on the long term.
Still, it's highly notable, as you practically hear the main theme being remixed at pretty much the same stages as Brawl. And as for a brief list of BGM tracks that literally remix the main theme...

*Menu
*Battlefield
*Multi-Man Smash
*Final Destination
*Final Results Victory
*Final Results Defeat
*All-Star Rest Area
*Master Hand
*Master Core
*Master Fortress
*Special Orders

How about a hand-drawn or watercolor art style for the next Smash? That'd be neat.

Melee Fox and Falco look amazing, and if we're talking about model abominations and not talking about Brawl Pikachu I don't know what to say.

.. This.. actually sounds badass. Smash and watercolor sounds brilliant all of a sudden.

I think I can see what your getting at.

I swear, Yoshi didn't look good in any Smash game until 4. With 64, it was a given considering everyone looked terrible there. Melee Yoshi was hideous, and Brawl Yoshi improved it but was still only passable at best. Smash 4 finally nailed it.

Melee Fox and Falco also looked pretty bad, as did Brawl Pikachu due to its weird proportions and paler yellow making it look sickly.

Melee fox looked kind of uncanny. at least, when I was little I thought so, but then again, I suppose they where going for a mix between SNES and N64 Fox with that.

Most of the models in Melee felt pretty rushed (Which comes to no surprise I guess since it was a launch window game) I think DK's model probably unsettles me out the most though (Not as hideous as his Mario Kart DS design, but it's up there as one of his poorer looking models imo....)

Although being fair, I do kind of like Peach, Zelda and Marth's design's though.

Going to be trying something new with the poll

Since Nintendo's current plan is "one big game a month," i'm going to try and do a monthly poll.

First, is ARMS, based on it's release this month. This poll won't be up very long since Splatoon 2 comes out soon, but i'm sure most people will have their votes in by then.

Going to be saving the results to see just how wrong/right we were pre-announcement

Just for having things be more than just saved on my computer, ^here are the results of the last poll. Couldn't hurt to have.

I went with 50% for the poll, since it's highly dependent on whether or not the next game is a port, IMO. If it's a port, their odds are lower. If it's a full new title, they're basically a certainty I think.

How do you even quantify the percentage of something like this, though? It would have been a lot more straightforward to simply lay out options of "Zero chance, Unlikely, Could go either way, Very Likely, Guaranteed" instead of trying to turn this into a science when we don't even have all the necessary variables.

That said, I think it could go either way. ARMS is not even a month old yet so it's hard to say how much of a lasting legacy it'll actually have. I would feel more confident in Spring Man's chances if we already have Inklings first for being in a similar situation.

It'll be easier to answer the ARMS poll the longer ARMS is out, naturally. We'll probably have a decent grasp on its popularity by this holiday. I don't think I can make a confident answer just yet.

That said, I'm pretty sure we've seen that Sakurai doesn't always choose characters based on popularity. He chose to bring in Bowser Jr., Duck Hunt, ROB, Mr. G&W, etc. There's a fair chance we could get an ARMS character even if the game doesn't do so well.

...On that note, what ARMS-related stuff would you guys want to see in the next Smash? Personally, I'd like to see Ribbon Girl's stage- it could function similarly to Colosseum- or Biff as an Assist Trophy- he could work a bit like Resetti.

I never really thought most of Melee's models looked that bad at all, tbh. I fail to see what's wrong with the Yoshi model, even though future appearances are naturally updated and improved. :ohwell:

Well, I will admit consider every appearance of Fox and Falco after Melee a major improvement. Falco particularly, Fox looked okay apart from being far, far less detailed.

The only other model in Melee I have any problems with is Bowser's. The proportions in his limbs didn't look right at all. It seems like tried to make him a bit slimmer but very muscular and built, which isn't how he normally looks, he's usually just bulky all around. It still works with his Giga Bowser form, but not in his normal appearance.

Apart from that, everything looked fine to me. Brawl and 4 improved everything for sure, but again, that's to be expected.

______

As for ARMS....yeah, I still don't think they've got a good chance just yet, and they may not get a good chance later either. Give the game some time to age just a little bit and see how well it does, because it's still very new. Unless they decide to include a character for some promotional reasons or just for the heck of it, which is unlikely, I don't see many reasons for one of the characters to be added to Smash at this time.

I don't like Yoshi's new look. I know its based off of how he's starting to show up in current Nintendo games, but he just seems too small. I also miss the noises he used to do. He does look better now then he did then imo, but it still doesn't seem right just yet.

I think they just finally got Pikachu right.

I still don't see why everyone hates Melee Fox and Falco. I think it's their best looks by far to this point. I can deal with newer Falco, but new Fox looks too catlike. His snout is too short.

Honestly I haven't liked any of the Bowser models so far. They all just feel off, I'd really like to see something a bit more true to his usual appearance. Especially because I love how he looks in most Mario games but Smash just hasn't nailed it yet.

Unique moveset potential for characters originating from an unique game gameplay-wise? And said potential can further compliment the variety Smash's roster is known for?

I really liked Melee Bowser and Brawl Bowser. Maybe because they were hunched over. I also liked Yoshi before he stood upright.

I actually like the newest one. It seems like it's more closely based off of current Bowser, whereas Brawl/Melee seemed like they were just trying to modernize Super Mario 64's design. The only thing that bothers me about Smash 4 Bowser is that his voice is way less intimidating.

I think it's the hair that bugs me most, changing that would help a ton.

I just imagined UbiArt kind of Smash Bros.

I would love that. Very asrtistic. Best if they can make it seem the ink/paint moves ect.

Or some more flashy artstyle idk.
A dark one like Mario Strikers wouldn't work well imo.

Frankly, Bowser's Smash 3DS / Wii U model would've easily made the cut for utilizing Kenny James's voice portrayal of him. Melee Bowser and Brawl Bowser were pretty much designed to use realistic roars, especially the former, where a good portion of Melee Bowser's voice clips originated from his N64 appearances.

I like the realistic roars and would like to see them make a return no matter what Bowser looks like honestly, but it would be nice to get his actual voice actor to do some Smash work for a change. Maybe it's just not in the budget?

Hard to say, but at this point, it feels highly unacceptable to still see Bowser use realistic roars. After all, Bowser Jr. managed to get away with using his Mario series voice clips that Caety Sagoian made. Even the Koopalings managed to keep their voice clips from New Super Mario Bros. Wii.

In the case of Giga Bowser, however, he's pretty much meant to use realistic roars, as his appearance alone just does not work at all with Kenny James's voice work.

On a side note, Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong should've been utilizing their Mario series voice clips as well, preferably the ones made by Takashi Nagasako (Donkey Kong) and Katsumi Suzuki (Diddy Kong). They were able to get away with the gorilla and monkey sounds in Brawl, but that just does not work well with the nature of Smash 3DS / Wii U.

I just suddenly thought of something Smash should be ashamed of itself for ot having unlike other crossover fighters or licenced fighters in general. Character interaction. You have ALL these characters and you do nothing with them
I just thought about this. Characters ultimately interacting in Smash just can't be done. Super Smash Bros. Murder's execution of it is an example of how it should be done if attempted though.

The only way I can see them interacting is in unique team battle victory screens, and even then it would just be special animations.

The same can be said about ARMS too. Both that game and Smash need campaigns like those of Street Fighter and the likes =P

It's the BIGGEST issue I had with Subspace, as you've got all these characters, but they're all silent. That simply NEEDED characters talking

Well, Yoshi and Bowser/Koopa are supposed to b reptilian in mannerisms, right?
IMO it doesn't matter, they should stay true to their actual characters. Bowser and Yoshi don't show overly reptilian mannerisms in the core games (minus Yoshi hatching from an egg and having a long tongue, and even then he's fairly anthropomorphized), so they shouldn't play up those traits in Smash.

Super Smash Bros Murder?

THOSE SHORTS?

This might be the worst idea I've seen on this thread.

You want all the characters to throw out their personalities for the sake of odd jokes, gore and teenager humor?

So I looked this up since I was completely out of the loop, but...please be joking.

Ignoring the terrible animation and voice acting and sound quality, literally everyone was completely out of character for the sake of gorey Shock humor. Though I did chuckle at "This is how a cat takes a shower." Nothing else, though.

The Switch game should allow tag-teams. You can arrange your team and then switch out to the next character in line. The character coming onto the stage performs their special entry attack.

For example: Bowser can appear in fire while swinging a chain chomp to the ground to smash an enemy.

If Princess Peach switches to Bowser, he can say something cheesy about protecting her and if Mario switches to Bowser, he can say something insulting about the plumber. That way you can get interactions.

So, the MvC approach?
Actually, that'd be a cool albeit odd mechanic for Smash
