I suppose something from the Splatoon series is warranted besides the Squid Sisters. So I’ve decided to choose the Salmonids.

These will appear in a queue, just like Salmon Run, and make their way across the stage back and forth for a little while. Don’t get too close, or you’ll take damage from them. The order could also be random, consisting mainly of Chums, Smallfrys, and Cohocks.

I’m not too sure what isn’t clicking with people so far with this concept. Splatoon has earned a second assist trophy, but I’m not too keen on the idea of just another idol group.

Salmon Run is a part of the series I can see getting representation in Smash.

From the most popular Fire Emblem game, especially on Switch. And we are in dire need of more recent characters from this series.

Fire Emblem still looks a bit weak at only three fighters. A fourth, and from a Switch game no less would help round this crowd out.

Job 140: Alvis (Xenoblade Chronicles) (Echo Fighter of Shulk)

I’m all for the trend of having bosses be altered versions of playable fighters, and Alvis is no different, and Alvis is to Alpha what Bowser/Eggman are to their boss forms.

As an echo fighter of Shulk, Alvis would share many moves. Some Monado Arts would be different, such as Alvis using Monado Purge to debuff opponents and Monado Cyclone to increase knockback or the like.

And I don’t just want us to rely too heavily on existing echo fighters. Get some new echoes in here, I say.

Perhaps changing Shulk to have the Monado II instead is a possibility to make them a bit more different?

Plus, Alvis would mark the first antagonist for the series in the roster.

Job 139: Mewtwo

Pokemon in particular still feels a little sparse, and Mewtwo is IMO the best choice to round it out. I always thought his presence, being the series' most iconic legendary Pokemon, was a powerful one and provides a pretty distinct role on both the Pokemon lineup and the roster collectively. Intimidating god-level psychic powers give him an identity akin to one of those fighting game characters you feel like you ought to not even be controlling. After this Pokemon could maybe use one more new face, just to work against then Gen 1 skew a little further. But there's a reason Gen 1 gets the representation it does, because someone like Mewtwo is still so important.

Honorable mentions here to Ike, who I think should hands down be the next FE character added, and Wii Fit Trainer who I'd love to see return.

Job 140: Richter

I think Richter is underrated a little bit. Perhaps just because he functions identically to his forefather, but the two were notably added as kind of a package deal. Simon borrows from Richter's abilities, and vice versa. As such it's just nice to have them both around - Richter is also particularly popular in Japan, I believe he's the most popular protagonist over there. Keeping both of these two around provides a comfortable worldly balance of tastes.

Part of me thinks we’re leaning too much on older Fire Emblem. The fact our newest fighter from the series is from 2012 makes me prioritise Byleth a smidge more.

Mewtwo is also an omission I’m okay with filling.

Fighter Jobs:

I think Noah would make for a good contemporary addition. There’s definitely ways to make him unique from other swordfighters.

He can unsheath his Blade to use more powerful attacks after a while, in what would likely be once per stock, and utilise other weapons for singular attacks.

I’ll just resubmit Noah. We’ve been very hesitant on adding more recent faces. Fire Emblem and Pokémon have big leanings towards older characters right now.

I’m kind of surprised that Splatoon hasn’t had a boss nominated yet. Let’s give more love to this modern Nintendo series.

We already have Fury Bowser and the Death Egg Robot, so this follows that trend of pre-existing fighters having boss variations.

Plus, it was a natural choice for a more modern series. We ought to have more first party bosses too.

Calamari Inkantation would be a banger track to have play here too.

Falco is a series staple I would like to keep around, I don't think Star Fox should lose both of its supporting characters. He's a no brainer, although I flip flop on whether I prefer to keep him or Wolf constantly. And while I've been kind of indifferent to building on third party series any further in this later stretch, Tails is an addition I'd be content with. We did add Chun-Li, so expanding on Sonic feels apt as well. And then... idk, Tinkaton is pretty cool. I'm not sure if they're the ideal new Pokemon pick or not yet, but we could certainly use one anyway.

Sheik would make for a good returnee as well, but I'm concerned about skewing too far in the direction of bringing back Melee staples rather than some of the stragglers from the last couple games... like, I think I'd rather have Wii Fit Trainer or Duck Hunt or ROB first. Or K. Rool. There's no real correlation between these two ideas, it's just hard not to weigh them the same way when we're getting to crunch time. I'm cool with bringing Sheik back but I guess my point is that I don't want us neglect newer veterans that can be further established as mainstays.

As for Noah, I'm just content with where Xenoblade is right now. I agree that we could use another Switch character or two, but that's why I threw Tinkaton a bone. I wouldn't mind if he was included, just not my priority at the moment.

Job 143 (Boss) : King Hippo

So here's one that I think would be really interesting... we have a lot of gigantic, super powered bosses right now. God level threats. So I wonder then, how interesting might it be to implement a more traditional opponent like King Hippo as a boss? His fight is pretty iconic, demonstrating one of the clearest pictures of Punch-Out's formula. You gotta whack him in the gut, but he's not going to let you unless you pop him in the jaw first.

Punch-Out's combat system is one that I think remains relevant to any fighting game. It's a matter of patience and acting at just the right time. Hippo would likely be more similar to a "normal" fighter than any other boss, albeit quite a bit bigger. He's a titan, just not as huge as Giga Bowser and moreso the likes of a normal player character with a Super Mushroom. But he would operate as a brick wall, blocking your attacks until he leaves himself vulnerable by attacking you, and opening that big mouth. And of course yes, his pants do fall to the ground.

Job 144 (Assist Trophy) : Duster

For now, it seems unlikely that Lucas will return. So I'd like if we can maintain some Mother 3 representation through an AT... as not to sour things, I'm not suggesting Lucas himself become an AT. Instead, we can add Duster. He can immobilize opponents with his wall staples, then go in for some devastating kicks. He can also toss smoke bombs, obscuring vision in specific areas of the stage. Perhaps as a thief, he may even steal an item from you and use it himself?
