The only thing I'll agree on is that the Old design could've been fine, but I also don't hate the new one. Either works for me. Hell, Jungle Beat, as weird of a title as it is, was worked on by the Mario Galaxy team before Galaxy came out, so it's not as if internal Nintendo hasn't gone back to DK previously. Same with internal Nintendo doing Metroid Zero Mission and Fusion while Prime 1 and Prime 2 were done by Retro. So saying "The Japanese, can't possibly understand the ape like Europeans do" is a wild statement. 2 of those games were by American lead teams as it was anyway. And I'd argue that Jungle Beat had his coolest looking design, both compared to new DK and Rare DK. Again, probably the reason why I don't hate New DK is that he's more or less DK 94 in 3D.Lucky
ok but like the old design could emote. They didn’t need to change it to do expressive animations. And hearing about how “the new design is so expressive” just feels like… idk what it feels like but it feels wrong. I’m sorry but I just don’t like it and I feel like way too many people have been won over by it based on a flimsy argument and little flourishes that you could have done with the old design anyway.
He didn’t need to put on weight. He didn’t need to get a bunch of really shaggy fur. He didn’t need an eyebrow that perfectly rounds around his eyes.
He didn’t need to look like a Mario character. His game didn’t need to play like a Mario game. The environments didn’t need to look like Mario environments. The villains didn’t need to look like Mario villains.
Donkey Kong doesn’t need to be Mario. Miyamoto just wanted him to because all of a sudden he cares about “his baby” that he initially abandoned on the stoop in England. It’s too late. He doesn’t get to try to raise his “son” now and he should stop before he makes things even worse.

I dunno, the little one is VERY Spike/Badboon-core. Dunno if you played Ape Escape or Monkey Ball. Like a scheming little ****. I guess I could say he's Monkey Wily or Monkey Cortex. But without facial hair, he's not quite that style all the way. But sorta.I'm still hoping these are like... K. Rool's new hired goons or something since none of them really look like "final boss/main antagonist" material to me. They ain't Bowser, they're the Broodals.
It should also be kept in mind, King Dedede also got a more retro inspired design in the past couple of Kirby games making him look more like Kirby 64 Dedede.Or maybe they think they’re taking in a wayward franchise that hasn’t had a consistent developer in arguably decades.
And don’t hit me with the “THEY COULD’VE GOTTEN SOMEBODY ELSE” again. They could’ve, but they didn’t. They wanted to do it themselves. I know you swear they need a Western developer but I don’t think your ability to make good DK games is innate to which side of the globe you were born on.

Obviously, nothing is confirmed, but both of these structures are kinda crocodile shaped.

I don't know what to tell you. It just... looks like Mario. Odyssey specifically. The textures, the landmarks, the new characters, the collectibles. Yeah the monkey miners don't look as Mario as some of the other stuff but I don't take much comfort in that. Like I can't believe I'm the only one who sees the Mario Paint all over this game's aesthetic because to me it's so obvious. And if you meant the bosses then... IDK they still look like Mario characters to me. But also like Pokemon at the same time which is weird. They just don't feel like they fit. I get new designs can be off putting. Overcomplicated MCU suits are like the post children for this. And I while I don't hate the games, I DO NOT LIKE the Zero series designs for most of the Mega Man characters in it. So again, I have some sympathy there.
I would also say that he isn't just doing Mario *. He's still rolling, there's still mine carts, still barrel cannons, still throwing barrels. All DK *. The new stuff isn't even cribbing Mario, it's cribbing off of Hulk. We haven't seen whether or not he does things like Capturing or not to just say it's DK Odyssey.
I don't think the new Monkey/Apes look like Mario characters. They feel closer to Kirby or Monkey Ball(you'd think THEY would crossover, btw). But obviously, that's a personal perspective thing. And again, Jungle Beat had, IMO some cool Kong designs, which I wish one or two of them stuck around. We'll have to see if we're lucky enough to have Diddy and Dixie in the game too. I hope so, they showed up in the movie, from what I heard.

I guess the little one could be the main guy but I don't think so. If i'm being honest he seams more like... boss of World 1 to me. And also having DK's cast of iconic side characters and villains be in the game is not something we should be "lucky to have". That's like saying "we're lucky to have Luigi, Peach, Bowser, and Yoshi back". No other video game series has to go through this so why does Donkey Kong?

When I saw it I thought it was just a new Kirby platformer.So when the Kirby Air Riders trailer started I had a really quick freak out.
If you remember the World of Light trailer Kirby is escaping on the warp star after everyone gets booty blasted by Galeem. When I saw the star falling, for a quick second I thought it Smash related. Smash Ultimate specifically.
I thought we were getting Ultimate DX with an expanded story mode. Gave me a heart attack.
Now hold on. I don’t see any homogenization here. I don’t see DK hitting blocks and eating mushrooms. Okay admittedly the overalls are a bit jarring, but the game is themed around mining so I can let it slide.But why do you like it!?! Why do you want Donkey Kong to be more like Mario? it's the arty style and general gameplay structure that feel homogenized. They could give Mario a digging mechanic if they wanted to and then it would just be this. They could build a whole game around it like they did the FLUDD. It doesn't get points because "gorillas stronk so stronk monkey punch dirt to make hole". Like that is such a basic idea. It takes more than riding in mine carts and throwing barrels and grabbing bananas to really be a Donkey Kong game.Now hold on. I don’t see any homogenization here. What I do see is that this game was clearly built in the Odyssey engine. And I love that engine. I adore that engine with all my heart. So I know this is gonna be a fun game.

You seem to have a very high personal standard for what constitutes a Donkey Kong game. Yeah, look at Origami King.Well the thing with Sticker Star is that it was bad.
If Sticker Star was radically different but really good, people would’ve more readily accepted it. They still would’ve missed some aspects of the older games, but if it was a good game it would’ve been well received.
Super Paper Mario, while divisive, is pretty liked by the fanbase because even though it’s different it does do some things very well. Namely the story and characters. And people were actually pretty cool with Origami King, at least once it came out, because once again it’s a solid game.
