I'm just baffled that they seemingly ignored staples like Diddy Kong while they have MUGEN-level picks like Stingby on full display. You're telling me you forgot Petey Piranha, but a goddamn Fishbones knew how to drive??

And RIP my guy E. Gadd fr. They'll invite ANYONE to Mario Kart before that guy.

Paper Mario has some beloved or notable characters that definitely should've been included. Madam Flurrie would've diversified heavy weights. Lady Boo. Goombario would've certainly been cool. The Bandit could've perfectly represented Yoshi's Island.

Kirby Air Riders basically confirms that, if Ultimate Deluxe does exist, we'll see it having a different director than Sakurai.

Not like a director on an enhanced port of a game is going to make major shifts to Smash conventions, but it'll be interesting perhaps.
I think this is less of an unpopular opinion and more of a legitimate question about who's going to take the helm of the next Smash game.

To be fair. We don't know the full roster. It looks massive, lol.

The character select screen seems to indicate 4 pages with ~12 characters each, in which case we've seen all the characters already. I guess it's possible that they're hiding something, but for now, I'm rolling with Occam's razor. This is probably it until at best post-launch.

Personally, I'm a little mixed on World's seeming focus on mooks. On one hand, picks like Pokey and Cataquack are very funny, but on the other, it feels like they didn't even get the essentials before diving headfirst into the bargain bin. Mario's cast of spinoff regulars isn't even that big, and getting folks like Peepa and Rocky Wrench (separate from Monty Mole!) over actual named characters seems kind of a waste.

That said, day 1 Cheep Cheep main if it has a green costume. Gotta rep my boy Mr. Kipper when I can.

Game isn't out yet and we're still learning about new racers, I wouldn't make assumptions like that so quickly

I honestly think the roster is gonna be huge, maybe even 100

I've always been against the whole Smash fandom "ooh, a shiny new thing!" approach every time a new character is seen or gets a breakthrough/comeback role...

That being said, Mii Tomodachi, paralympic footballer, and Moo Moo are all utter peak, would be the best Smash picks since Jigglypuff and G&W, so I think I get it, things really did just line up that luckily for the "specifically add Cappy, Rex, Spring Man, BOTW Link and Octoling" crowd.

...No clue where that image came from but I actually counted 50 characters so far on the Wiki, 2 more than what this setup can fit. How curious.

My explanation for that is that a few of the characters like Rocky Wrench could feasibly be costumes for existing characters, making up the difference. Seems more likely to me than "the devs are trolling by faking the number of spots on the character select," anyway.

I'm admittedly guilty of continuing the topic a bit earlier here myself, but this thread isn't about Mario Kart or general unpopular gaming opinions. There are separate threads for both.

This thread is about unpopular Smash opinions, so it's probably for the best that we stay on track for that.

Speaking of, I still think the Miis should've gotten a moveset relating to most of the actual Wii games they were in. That would've been a lot cooler and more creative than just making them generic, customizable blank slates who fulfill several fighting styles and fighting character archetypes that many other characters on the roster all fulfill with their own abilities and weapons already. The only thing the Miis stayed true to was their core roots of being an avatar for the player that can do whatever's needed to in the game they appear in, but I still think that there was a major missed opportunity for a sports and sporting gear-oreitend moveset, here. That, I think most of the moves they have are either obnoxious or generic.

...I can't honestly complain too much since we still got Team Rocket and the Sans costumes for them in Ultimate, though.

I could see this for some options, maybe, but also explicitly not Rocky Wrench. If they were to just make it a costume swap, I feel like they'd use the NSMB design which was just Monty Mole in goggles. The past few games that have had them, they've been making a point to make the Rocky Wrench into its more unique, older self to set itself apart from Monty Mole again. Making it a costume swap would contradict that very clear design philosophy.

It’s also possible that they brought back needing to unlock characters, and they (either intentionally or accidentally) used a file for the Direct there that doesn’t have them all unlocked.

What a weird way to talk about people you think of as "vindictive"

SSBU, DLC included, is over $100 as is any way.
There's no package deal after all these years? Classic Nintendo. (but then what competition does smash have?) More power to em I say, for eschewing insubstantial micro transactions for the most part

And the community is notorious in case this was breaking news, the gatekeeping is out of this world. And I suspect that the earthbound trolls bastardizing & misrepresenting the most noble innocent characters of all, overlaps even to the venerable smash boards.

Over there! (Note: Not a 100% guarantee)
OIP (14).jpg

i remember Wario Wario Wario Wario Wario Wario 's want for a wholly inanimate character in smash a few years back , which is strangely coalescent with a character i've been pining for for a minute now -- ness' nightmare/the evil maki-maki statue
however you would do their moveset, it'd be peak
u could just have them be a static model echo of ness, an original character harnessing the literal negative vibes of earthbound, moving around via krakens slightly cresting under the stage to ferry them around - a proper area of effect character!
and they are a pretty prominent piece of iconography in that title specifically!

Mother's mid-bosses are such an untapped goldmine. Even putting aside all the kinda weird bad-taste stuff going on with Masked Man, I have no clue what would endear even someone unaware of the Baggage™ to him over any of the guardians, Master Belch, the chimera bosses, so on.

I don't even know what this is supposed to mean. 😭
It means a noticeable chunk of these ness mains couldn't be more diametrically opposed to the noble sacrifice he made for Lucas in SSE. Charlatans! But then maybe I could stand to be more sporting about that sort of teasing/bullying. Maybe it's just what the doctor ordered... Nahh I doubt the intent is typically "ease up man no hard feelings" so much as "good, I hope you have all the hard feelings". Hard pass

why are you still this angry over the most niche, obscure imaginable brawl dramas, and why do you keep wording them like maga dog whistles.

honestly that scene in subspace more sucks because a smash story made has to implement any tangible stakes or consequences beyond just "stop the bad thing" instead of just being haha funny hour like the actual gameplay is.

Smash 4 was no different, and some of these elite smash VODs show me little has changed. Anyway I got dogpiled here for a harmless idea about dual characters, and it reeks of all the same unprovoked vitriol, to which I will gladly bare my teeth. Smash community earned all the vilification it ever received. But to whom the shoe doesn't fit, is meant no offense
