You keep saying this. Tell me which special moves, besides Shadow Ball/Aura Sphere, are at all similar between Mewtwo and Lucario.
Namely side-b command grab and up-b with no hitbox. Far from the only characters with such mechanics, but these happen to be menacing and feared energy-themed pokemon. Not at all dissimilar to the Mario bros, which I'm also not arguing are straight clones. Giving no regard to these parallels is just, ugh. Like I said we're splitting hairs here and the ensuing crap-storm is the true absurdity here. Consider this a crash course in learning to not get upset over inconsequential, highly subjective opinions, least of all in a thread dedicated to unpopular opinions 💀

Incineroar is kind of a Lucario clone if you think about it: Bipedal cat, command grab Side B, Counter Down B, martial artist, gets stronger the more he gets hit (if using Revenge), gameplan relying on said raw strength, diving Up B, mostly using kicks for the rest of the moveset
Not nearly in the same category, unlike those two incineroar has no aerial prowess, doesn't shoot, not no energy, no nothing but his bare knuckles. Also he knows how to smile now and then

There was a previous thread like this, but it got locked a year back due to constant debate.

There's a difference between debate - healthy or unhealthy - and almost 4 pages worth of shouting matches countering the same objectively wrong fact with another objectively wrong fact on loop.

Anyways, let’s change the subject.

I think the next game should update Spiral Mountain and have Grunty commentate on the fight, as a successor to the Snake Codecs and Palutena’s Guidance. It would allow for more unique commentary while sticking within a reasonable scope.

It’s also such an ancient talking point that I’m surprised people still get so one-shot by it, it compels them to write essays about it

I think it should be socially accepted to want Gruntilda in Smash for the sole reason of having her rhyme about other characters. I once suggested Gruntilda & Captured Jinjo as a Banjo-Kazooie echo and people got pissed but I stand by my choice

I don't think that's really an unpopular opinion.
I've seen the idea of Grunty Rhymes get brought up favorably before and I think GameExplain even did a set for fun.

I'm not sure honestly, like, unlike with the Codecs and Guidances, you need to sit still during the whole thing to look at it as unlike those, Gruntilda wouldn't have be voiced. While this may not be the case for localizations judging how say, the Dutch version of the game only translates the announcer and the text, localization does become much harder trying to do the wordplay thing.

There's a lot of reasons I think Gruntilda would be a bad Smash pick (both in terms of moveset and... you know, being 90s Rare), but yes, I love the idea of interaction voice lines as a character-specific gimmick, or even a stage specific gimmick (IIRC Graveyard in PSASBR did this?), as opposed to an easter egg.

"This is what Peter Jackson thinks about in the tub!"

"Aah, so that's what they meant by 'speak to the hand!'"

No snake codecs for the whole roster is a tragedy (RIP VA), nothing matches the deadpan tactical deliberation of snake and co. And it fits like a glove with all the bizarre characters snake contends with and constantly needs intel on, slapping the same concept onto Starfox etc. just doesn't hit the same

Not sure what the problem is with 90s Rare aside from being a magnet for annoying and entitled people having even more annoying and entitled nostalgia for it, but yeah I think Grunty would be really neat if only for the rhymes but also because the classic witch moveset is not in Smash yet.

Agree in that Grunty’s rhymes not being enough to make her an appealing fighter. Palutena as a Smash fighter kinda sucks but I’m not sure how her personality can be translated to a fighting role otherwise

I'm mixed on this. I love gruntilda and like the idea of a codec done by a villain, but at the same time, I worry adding too much of rare's trademark meta snark may lead to stuff like Smash fans generally taking her insults way too seriously.

Idk, maybe I'm crazy, but we know for a fact Smash fans look at things with a downright conspiratorial gaze half the time.

I’m thinking that, on matches on Spiral Mountain, any character can summon Grunty by doing the codec input, but there’s about a 50% chance she’ll mock your character instead of your opponent’s.
I, for one, think it should be 100%

ok now i think about it this is a really stupid but interesting function vs. form debate: should grunty's insults have the practical purpose and functional risk and reward of being able to taunt the opponent, or should her grunty personality be represented by her exclusively nagging at the person who told her to get over here and verbally fight their battles for them?

Could go either way, she’s in it for the love of the game

Disregarding picks as jokes? in 2025? Come on now. If you think Clippy doesn't make sense, actually argue for it. Don't just take it as a given that "Clippy makes no sense" without elaborating whatsoever. I do not have whatever third-eye knowledge supposedly makes it obvious that Clippy doesn't make sense in a post-Cloud world. Or even better: just say "I don't like Clippy" and not try to make some kind of objective statement out of it.
First of all I don't necessarily think this is a serious reply. But I'll bite.

Clippy doesn't make sense cause he's not a videogame character, nor associated with one. Or ever appeared as one. I said this specifically to blot out the similarities to say, R.O.B. , who's also not a videogame character by origin, but did appear in them.

He's not as much of a mascot to Microsoft, maybe he is to the desk office applications however. Sure. If any gaming character is a mascot to Microsoft it's probably Minecraft Steve. I also don't think Microsoft or Sony stick too much with the mascot shtick as Nintendo does. They stick with created characters from popular series, but those aren't their own for the most part. Not even Cloud, Crash, Ratchet and Clank, you name it, all created by another developer.

Nintendo does mascots best. Hence Smash Bros.'s existence. Clippy isn't a match, because he lacks the criteria to make for a good crossover fighting game inclusion. He's not a gaming icon, he doesn't have a strong fan base or support, Microsoft has actual gaming characters they could choose, and whilst not impossible to have a weird gimmick based move set perhaps he doesn't strike as fighter material either.

So there's that. I therefore don't think Clippy is a serious suggestion. And I doubt the developers would feel otherwise.

All the “borderline” picks seem too fun to me. I’d find it interesting to see what they’d do with Clippy, Rich Uncle Pennybags, Nester, Rainman, Captain N, Wreck-It Ralph, Hatsune Miku, Zoltar, Chuck E. Cheese, Mametchi, the Black Knight 2000, Yugi, Moriah the Thief, etc.…though I recognize this can cross into the non-video-game-characters argument. If I were to open the floodgates any way, though, I’d do it towards this and not the primarily non-video-game/gaming/software series like Dragon Ball, Star Wars, Marvel, etc. even for their gaming-originating characters like Android 21, Starkiller, Luna Snow…because at the very least, as we’ve seen with Sora, you’d be able to make the former series’ representation seem more complete, such as it were. Although I realize you can maybe stretch this and put, like, Neo or Kirito. So who knows?

I have already addressed the "Clippy is not a video game" and "Windows/Office is not a video game" criticism multiple times. Additionally, Clippy has appeared in video games - Ribbon Hero 2 and X-Tract Paperclip. I have refused to mention these as I do not believe they are relevant beyond a gotcha and if anything will just sweve the conversation into some kind of Android 21 thing, but if ROB is only elegible because of Kirby's Dream Land 3, there's a counterpoint right there. If it is an inate fact that Clippy is not a gaming character and any counter-argument I can provide inherently does not warrant discussion due to this, why are you even having a debate?

Mascots do not typically exist for art/media companies. Mario, Sonic, Pac-Man, and Mickey Mouse are fringe outliers, Clippy's status as a Microsoft mascot is entirely cultural and not official, which is also true of Kratos; Mega Man; Rayman; Cloud (for Square or Sony) and any other major gaming "mascot" you can name, or even characters like Bugs Bunny for Warner Bros. Nintendo does not have "mascots, plural", it just has Mario, and you can even count the amount of "gaming icons" Nintendo has on slightly over one hand - Mario, Pikachu, DK, Link, Isabelle, that's about it. Maybe Duck Hunt? Does Link even count? Culturally, when people think Microsoft, Clippy will be the first character that comes to mind, and if they don't think of a character, Windows will be the first thing to come to mind, the exact same situation as Mega Man, but that is ultimately irrelevant, as I feel that Clippy not having a strong fan base is a non-factor bordering on an argument in his favor. I think crossover picks should be creative, the mentality of a scavenger hunt for content to make a moveset out of, and not people-pleasing. Very few characters in Smash are icons of any type. And even putting that aside, again, Clippy fans exist, you are literally talking to one. There is absolutely no difference between a billion Cloud fans and one singular Clippy fan, or a billion Cloud fans and another billion supposedly-"ironic" Clippy fans, from any perspective other than "we've got to have money!"

If you don't think Wii Fit, PictoChat, Cooking Guide, e.t.c. should've ever been represented in Smash, you can just say it.

If Clippy gets in I want his home stage to be the Rolling Hills Windows background.

Personally, I think the semantics on Clippy’s status as a video game character are more nuanced, or more subjective, than “PictoChat is not a video game either” (or Miiverse, which hasn’t been mentioned in this discussion but stretches the limits a bit more considering it can be accessed without a video game console through the online site). In fact, semantics in general famously knows very fuzzy borders between definitions, as seen in the “Behold, a man” anecdote of humans being described as “featherless or furless bipedals” and Diogenes holding up a plucked chicken and calling it a man. It’s just a linguistic given that some people draw those borders differently and that no one is right or wrong when it comes to the fringes of calling things “video game characters”. That’s not a cop out or a refusal to debate Clippy’s chances, but a fact about language itself. The gist is that you can’t blame the other or call the other delusional or illogical for drawing the line differently, so to me it’s weird that the debate has gotten so heated. Clippy shares some factors with video game characters, and previously included content that borders the line has different factors that on their own are not air tight (PictoChat originating from video game hardware, for example), but linguistically, semantically, scientifically speaking simply do matter, as much of a cop out as it seems to declare seemingly arbitrary factors to be the dealbreaker for some.

I mean, heck, people have fuzzy-bordered themselves into advocating for other fringe cases of “video game characters” by arguing for video game exclusive content for non-gaming franchises, such as Android 21. My favorite example is me arguing for a “Kingdom Hearts Court Magician” Mii Outfit that is Donald Duck’s Kingdom Hearts oufit.

EDIT:
So, I personally want to see the limits of this discussion stretched further, so here are some fringe cases of characters and I want you, Clippy likers and Clippy haters alike, to tell me whether these are eligible for Smash. Feel free to add any other fringe cases to the list:

  • Duo (DuoLingo)
  • Reckless Wiimote Safety Guy
  • Wumpus (Discord)
  • Google Chrome Dinosaur (Dinosaur Game)
  • Spotify Snake* (Spotify)
  • Wii Remote
  • USB-C Charging Cable

*Spotify has an easter egg called “Eat this playlist, in which your playlist turns into the little dots that the Snake snake, or a variation thereof, eats up

This 'Lincoln Louding argueslop' or whatever about this dumb little paperclip is pretty ironic cause you know how people think the NES saved gaming, how Mario 64 was the first 3D game, Doom was the first FPS, Samus being a woman was the first time this twist happened in games or even that horses are real? Yeah, turns out, this thing isn't even called Clippy, it's like calling Luigi Green Mario or Shadow the Hedgehog being called Black Sonic

I guess it's more like calling Sonic... Hedgehoggy? or Soniccy? Soniccy the Hedgehoggy? Soniccy Theey Hedgehoggy? Calling Samus Metroid would be a good example if we even knew where the name "Clippy" came from lmao. Imagine if everyone came to an unspoken agreement to call Luigi "Lil' LM" even in serious conversation and that eventually just became his official name.

Yes: Reckless Wiimote Safety Guy, Lonely T-Rex (yes the chrome dino has an actual name), Duo, Wii Remote
No: Wumpus, Spotify Snake (now Nokia Snake? sign me up), USB-C

Clippy himself dances on a fine line between the two, but people have already explained why that is better than I could.

The last part, I do agree on that actually. Wii Fit Trainer is still a strange pick, but at least that game sold millions (to my surprise). And apparently, it led to a intuitive move set too.

Yeah I guess you're passionate about Clippy. And there are mascots beyond gaming. But this is Smash Bros. This is kinda about gaming...

R.O.B. didn't only appear in Kirby, R.O.B. appeared in Mario Kart DS too. And he's a unique case. He literally helped Nintendo stay on the market. A weird addition too maybe, same with Wii Fit Trainer. But... it doesn't compare to the slightest about how weird Clippy would be.

I guess you have your point. And as Sakurai said before, any character has their fans. But if you had to be honest, do you think Clippy in Smash Bros. is anywhere close to likely?

I also actually wouldn't mind a rep embodying old Windows games, though I'm more of a "Chip's Challenge elements in Smash" guy myself (and I'm aware that it was developed by Epyx for the Lynx first, but it was the PC ports that made it really famous).

How desperate are we that THE WINDOWS PAPERCLIP is being discussed for smash?
Tbh I feel that it's not genuine at all. Like, if someone said they wanted 'Issac' from Golden Sun and consistently made the same misspelling, you'd assume it's not genuine either right?

I don’t think strange/unconventional picks should always be considered a joke, and not always is the proposal being brought up as “this is very likely”. I like seeing a wide swath of ideas and fields explored that could or couldn’t be eligible for Smash. Having only a very rigid set/type of characters allowed to be discussed without users scoffing isn’t too interesting. Probably could be a balance between strange and conventional, but we’re already talking about the Pikachu VS Solid Snake VS Minecraft Steve fighting game.

I've had to say this a billion times by now, but I don't make jokes in relation to Smash picks. Of course I do consider "is it funny?" a factor, Smash is a funny game, but it's only a minor factor - Crash Bandicoot is a comedic character, but nobody calls him a "meme pick". If I don't see a compelling argument for a moveset, it stays in my head. Clippit/Clippy is a shapeshifter who would have the Windows BIOS at his command. That's the pitch. The life bar from Street Fighter would be funny to control, but I cannot come up with a remotely interesting moveset and the shape provides some insane logistical issues I can't answer, so that one just stays in my head.

I cannot roleplay a character, I do not have the skills to put up a troll facade, hold up to plausible deniability, and keep it going. If something is a joke to me, it will be extremely obvious and no doubt would be in the air.

That's why I would like to discuss the possibility of the guy from across my street to be a playable character. Hear me out!

- He would make a very unconventional and unexpected choice: none of my neighbors is in Smash yet, and no one would have seen that coming. That would broaden the speculation range by a lot.

- For his moveset, he looks like a regular guy and doesn't do anything special... but that's exactly what sets him apart from the rest of the cast! Moveset wise, that would be a golden opportunity for Sakurai to flex his creativity!

- I know most of the world has never heard of him before, but he must have some fans, I guess. I think he's married, so at least one person likes him, plus me, and I have been told that trying to please the fans is a bad approach anyway.

- If you wanted to dismiss him because he is not a video game character... think again!! Guess what? I'm pretty sure he played a video game or two at some point in his life, and at the very least: he is aware of the existence of video games! So there is a connexion, whether you like it or not!

I am now waiting for your undivised and enthusiastic approval. In the unlikely case of someone not liking my idea, please elaborate, becase I really don't see any difference between my neighbor and Cloud or Sora. Also, our street would make a pretty cool stage-after all, why not, we already have Pictochat. But come on, dismissing fun picks in 2025? Why would you be so stuck in the past?

I don’t think strange/unconventional picks should always be considered a joke, and not always is the proposal being brought up as “this is very likely”. I like seeing a wide swath of ideas and fields explored that could or couldn’t be eligible for Smash. Having only a very rigid set/type of characters allowed to be discussed without users scoffing isn’t too interesting. Probably could be a balance between strange and conventional, but we’re already talking about the Pikachu VS Solid Snake VS Minecraft Steve fighting game.
Agreed, I think running in circles discussing the same old and landing on “Which veterans would you cut” stuff basically every five pages is much more desperate than using the lack of news on a new Smash to discuss some out-there picks.

Why would you be so stuck in the past?
who would you cut to make room for this and also will it be a reboot or an ultimate deluxe? i’m awaiting your response as discussing anything else about the non-existing sequel to the mario pikachu sora fighting game (NOT A PARTY GAME) with strangers on the internet would simply be unserious and therefore ridiculous

So I guess we should talk about this infamous little guy if we're for whatever reason counting Office Assistant as a video game.

Smash could use an adware rep.

I swear at least one of you is going to unironically not only support this idea but make a defense on why it should be taken seriously for discussion.

See, I do think there's a very reasonable and completely nullifying argument against BonziBuddy in the fact that well, it's a scam - but not as far as representing Bonzi in Smash would go, as much as an out-universe moral factor. AFAIK Joe and Jay Bonzi still own the rights and - having never changed seemingly - tried to sell NFTs. If the rights were sold or we had a reasonable copyright law, hell yes, get him right in there.

Additionally, I'd like to argue that proposing a counter argument, and then IMMEDIATELY saying "I swear to god, you better not make a serious response", does not show good faith.
