With Young Link, we know Sakurai simply see's a child entity of Link as an important aspect of the series, not neccisrily the OoT/MM incarnation itself. So, it's safe to say that Toon Link is probably here to stay, which, if true, then there would be no reason to add Young Link. The child Link catagory is filled with a much more popular (And somewhat more prominent) choice. Young Link has no real reason to return.

With Pichu, the character itself got a lot of flack, and Sakurai realizes this. Not only that but his inclusion was both to be a joke character (bad on purpose) and a last minute roster buff. On top of that, Melee and Brawl have shown the series of Pokemon itself to have a realitively unstable roster. Pichu was completely scrapped after Melee, and Mewtwo was put in a low priority position in Brawl. (We should also note that Jigglypuff was one of the last characters added for some reason) Overall, Pichu just doesn't seem likely.

Then we have, Roy and Mewtwo, who are a whole different story. Big fanbases, were actually planned for Brawl, ect.

THEN, we have Doc. He was at one point planned for Brawl. He's also an easy clone, who has probably the third biggest fanbase out of all these characters (within the smash community, at least). He's a wildcard, IMO. It says something that he was going to be added to Brawl, and as far as we know, there was never an indication of Waluigi, Junior, or Toad being playable. Who knows? He could get in.

Do you guys really think he is worthy to be in the roster?

I don't. But that's not to say he doesn't have potential. He has a fanbase. He's earned a place in Smash, so I don't see why not. Personally, though, I'd rather chuck him onto Mario as an alt. and instead put in a character who can represent retro or a new one altogether.

Personally? I like Doc in Melee. Love playing as him. But if I WAS SAKURAI, I would add Junior/Toad instead.

Worthy? Yeah, but only because of Melee.

Dr. Mario is not worth it. A filler clone character to pad out the roster with hardly any differences between him and the original is not exactly material to get excited about.

He doesn't deserve a character slot, but being a palette swap seems like a must.

Alternate costume would be the best idea. I've tried SSB Crusade and it has a sort of character modes, in which you can select between Luigi and Weegee, or between Power Suit Samus and Zero Suit Samus. I think it could be a way to implement Dr. Mario.

I'm thinking, ALT costume, white cape, pills, none of the costume is stat changing. Just look different.

Dr. Mario's inclusion, as far as I'm concerned, depends entirely on moveset changes concerning Mario and Luigi. In SSB64, Mario and Luigi were barely different at all. In Melee, they were further differentiated, and many of their moves had different properties (despite looking similar to their N64 counterparts). Brawl, naturally, took it one step further, with even more unique moves, including changing Mario's Down B and Down Aerial.

Now, assuming Mario and Luigi both get similar kinds of alterations in SSB4, would it be too out-of-order to have Dr. Mario as 'Vanilla' Mario? That is to say, Mario would have all of his changes from SSBB and SSB4, whereas Dr. Mario's moveset in general would remain relatively untouched from Melee, with all of his Melee quirks, a few features of SSB64 Mario (his Tornado being a Meteor Smash, for example), much faster fall speed than Mario, and a brand-new Final Smash. Provided that both Mario and Luigi get further moveset changes in SSB4, Dr. Mario would be different enough from the both of them to warrant inclusion.

Personally I still wouldn't call him deserving of a spot - especially when the Mario series will likely get one new rep at most - but I'd be more than happy to see him in the game regardless.

No, just no.
Very insightful, explanatory post

10/10 would read again

(In fairness I'd prefer Toad or Paper Mario over Dr. Mario as the 5th Mario Rep any day of the week, but you coulda provided better reasoning than "just no")

Maybe I should be more constructive, hence herby I post my deliberately well thought analysis considering Dr.Mario's appearance in Smash Brothers:

NO!!!!

If you would care about my opinion about the Doc, read through the thread. If you want a quick answer: filler, do not want.

Such a compelling argument.

So far it tops just about every reason to make Dr.Mario return.

Note how the only characters with cut backlash from Melee are Mewtwo and Roy? And note how just about a 1000 characters are suggested more than Dr.Mario, even though he was in Melee, and planned for Brawl at some point? I noticed this, and hence I don't want Dr.Mario back unless we get a 70 character + roster. Which won't happen in this millenium any time soon.

Now, you got a valid argument. Good.

Dr. Mario could be an alt for Mario, still. Mewtwo and Roy being cut was a disgrace, that I very much agree.

So great, this turned from Diddy's "I hate Dr. Mario" ranting to Habanero's "I hate Mewtwo" ranting.

At least Diddy's was on topic. :glare:

Love him or hate him:

- He was planned for Brawl at one point
- Sakurai likes to expand on past ideas
Ex:
Just in case Sakurai couldn't get approval to use Marth from Intelligent Systems, he had some King Dedede concepts ready as a backup.
He thought about having a trainer summon the second generation starters, but there wasn't time/resources for such a labor-intensive character.

.
Not saying he will get in for sure, but

Dr. Mario made sense for a few reasons: he's from a critically-acclaimed retro game, the team wanted to include his music, and because a doctor would probably be on hand at an event as violent as Smash Bros

Doctors are important yo

It's because of that statement that makes me feel that Dr. Mario being made more into a "doctor" fighter would be suitable.
He already uses pills as a form of attack, why not give him comically large syringes and the like as well?
It makes as much sense as Captain Falcon being a fiery Kamen Rider.

I actually made a decloned moveset for Dr. Mario that had stuff like that. I believe I posted it a page or two back.

Now that would be a good idea, indeed... how couldn't I thought of this before? It definitely can work.

Shows that even similar characters can have completely different movesets.

Doc has a shot. However small or large it may be. Those who deny it are fooling themselves.

Sakurai could have thrown in a walking nintendo power magazine as a character in melee and we'd still have smash fans rallying for its inclusion into SSB4 because of its "popularity".

These cut characters need a really good reason to come back, otherwise they're just taking up a character slot for a potentially good challenger.

For every character added, there's a ton more who don't make the cut. That's how I see things.

So far Mewtwo's cut being a boon hasn't been explained, and Dr.Mario's inclusion hasn't been justified.

And I don't want a Dr.Mario moveset with doctor equipment. At least TRY to make it relevant as possible with attacks based on the Dr.Mario games. Untill then: no. Just no.

Dr. Mario inclusion is good because he was a fun character and because he is a Mario character. Some lower tier Mario characters are more popular and known then characters from some of the series you guys are pushing (Star Fox, Mother, F-Zero, Golden Sun, Xenoblade, etc.). Mario is not just the most popular Nintendo franchise, it is the most popular video game franchise of all-time.

Dr. Mario was a possibility for Brawl and last second miss. He would be easier to create than a detailed new character which may never be made. He was already in smash and people played him.

Not saying I am a huge fan but that is some reasons Diddy Kong.

Dr. Mario had his place. He helped pad the roster. Now Sakurai has a bigger and more knowledgeable team to flesh out fighters. I do not think Sakurai should add Dr. Mario. Just make Mario slightly stronger.

What BowserLick said. Honestly, stronger Fire Balls, stronger F Air and a better F Smash and Mario already plays as Dr.Mario. I don't see Dr.Mario as a justified character just cause Mario = Mario. If Dr.Mario was a bigger game series as a whole, perhaps. But not at this point.

Because there's a lot to draw from Dr. Mario games that can inspire a moveset... oh, and surely there aren't characters that don't take more liberties when taken into Smash. Pit totally had a bifurcated bow in the original Kid Icarus and Captain Falcon totally Falcon Punched his foes in F-Zero.

My favorite is how ike has a fiery explosion attack although ike in FE has no association with fire attacks. Its as if the title of the game implies that somebody has to have some sort of fire superpower.

Thing is: Pit and Captain Falcon have more reason to be in Smash than Dr.Mario in the first place.

Captain Falcon represents a whole Nintendo IP. Pit is there because he's like a neat retro revival.
