The very idea of even entertaining Ultimate Deluxe even has a shred of likeliness is hilarious, to be honest.

And using Mario Kart 8 is also not really the best comparison. Yes, it's a game from a previous console thrown into the launch year as a port... but that's about where the similarities end.

Mario Kart 8 is the most successful Wii U game, yes, but the Wii U was their biggest failure since the Virtual Boy and the Switch isn't backwards compatible with its games. Meanwhile, Ultimate is the best-selling fighting game ever created (a title that was previously held by Street Fighter II for 25 years), a top 3 best-seller for the Switch, said console ushered in Nintendo's most successful era ever in its long history and also, Switch 2 is compatible with Switch 1 games.

The situations behind these two games could not possibly be more different and shouldn't be compared imo.

Most people who would want Ultimate already own it at this point. I'm shocked people still genuinely believe a port is in the cards.
You know what? If someone uses Mario Kart 8 in the same sentence as Ultimate Deluxe, tag my ass.

I'll bring out the reminder that it doesn't always work by making y'all remember the Bowser's Inside Story remake, a game that did so poorly it made AlphaDream file for bankruptcy.

Ultimate Deluxe would be simple to develop because, well, it's already made, but it's a gamble whether it'll do well or be a massive flop.

Super Smash Bros. isn't Mario Kart. One of the reasons Mario Kart 8 got an enhanced port in the form of Deluxe was because the Wii U didn't do as well Nintendo would've hoped.

And once again, I'm pretty sure Sakurai is against the idea of ports. Like, there has never been a single port of a Smash game, the only exception being Smash 64 for the Wii's Virtual Console. And I'm pretty sure that's as far as it'll go in terms of ports.

The thing is that Ultimate WILL be available for Switch 2 as it does have backward compatibility. So, creating a deluxe version might be redundant since as said game exist.

I bet Sakurai might bring that up once he's ready to show another Smash Bros teaser.
Exactly. I think that making a totally new game is a much better decision financially.

Anyone who thinks the casual fan will be severely turned off by a few cuts doesn’t really understand the casual fan. They probably wouldn’t care, lol.

You telling me the average gamer would swear off the new Super Smash Bros, featuring Master Chief, Waluigi, Sans, and a Freddy Fazbear Mii costume, just because Young Link and Piranha Plant aren’t playable? Nah man.

Ultimate was awesome, but it wasn’t so sacred that consumers won’t accept anything else. If anything it’d be the most hardcore of hardcore players who’d be the most upset.

Since I imagine Sakurai and his team's philosophy character wise will be trying to fit as many veterans as they can in the time they've got (since a reboot makes no sense), a game with a solid decently sized roster of newcomers, a fresh stage list, and the eventual promise of DLC veterans and newcomers alike post-launch sells itself pretty well in my opinion lol

I mean not Piranha Plant or Young Link lol, the problem lies if characters like Joker, Sepiroth, Palutena, Sheik Lucas or Wolf don't make the cut.....

There likely would be a couple fan favorites who got cut, and that’s always unpleasant. But they’re not just gonna get rid of tons and tons of characters, like TheFirstPoppyBro TheFirstPoppyBro said they’re gonna want to keep as many veterans as they can. Not to mention there’ll be tons of cool newcomers to make up for it, so it’s not like we’d be losing content and gaining nothing in return.

I imagine we’d only lose a small handful of characters that just didn’t work out for this reason or that reason. And they could still come back as dlc, as seen in Smash 4.

I haven't played P3 (Only 3 "chapters" or so of P4) but Aigis would be sick, she seems cool. However, wouldn't a 2nd Persona rep be a bit too much?
I don't think so.

I just wanted them all in the US. Albeit, I get why Rosee Rupeeland isn't worldwide... except only Europe is where it's an issue. It not coming to the US is silly b now. The other two don't have an excuse for not being a EU release, though. Like, I get it. Back then Tingle hit a pretty bad low for a while in the US specifically. Now? Things changed. So porting them over isn't an issue any longer. He was only pretty bad in Wind Waker at best. The other Zelda games toned back his abrasiveness and focused on him still being greedy, but overall a pleasant fellow and helpful sometimes too. He's great in Minish Cap, for instance.

It may help that WW is the only timeline he's a jerkass, so.
Being abandoned also doesn't help the character's popularity.

Wolf and Lucas aren't the best examples given they were already cut before.
Outside of passionate people online, people will survive if some characters wind up not making it.

Since we have some veteran talk, I thought of something a bit ago that I'm kinda curious about.

Do you guys remember when Sonic got a small gameplay trailer in Smash 4 when he was revealed to be returning?

Do you think they'll do something like this for any returning third parties, or just reveal them like normal? Since Sonic was the only returning one in 4 but now we have like 16 possible returning third parties, I could honestly kinda see it going either way, but I'm leaning towards the latter, especially if next game keeps the little character videos on the website Ultimate had (which I hope it does).

And why Pokémon abandoned third versions entirely in favor of DLC expansions.
Also caused 3rd legendary to either be part of the main story (Eternatus) or don’t have one (Scarlet and Violet).

Terapagos isn’t really connected to the box art legends or at least not directly.
Do you think they'll do something like this for any returning third parties, or just reveal them like normal?
With a few exceptions, I think most returning 3rd party characters will be revealed like the rest of the cast.

My guess it depends of the 3rdparty, i think Sora and Steve will likely get some sort of special treatement if they return base game like Sonic in Smash 4. The rest of the 3rd party veterans will probably be anounced normally like the 1st party veterans.

If you don't mind me asking, which series out of those you mentioned might have a legit shot for a playable newcomer?

Speaking of Sony-owned characters... given how Sony IS still a competitor of Nintendo's, do we expect them to be willing to lend Nintendo any of their characters as PLAYABLE, or will they go the Shovel Knight route of just letting them be ATs?

Yes, I know Shovel Knight is an indie, so it's not the most APT comparison, but SEGA, Capcom, and Konami already have PLAYABLE characters in addition to 3rd party ATs, so...
Well, Golden Sun is by far the most likely, due to Isaac's Ballot performance and its general popularity. To a certain extent, this and Rhythm Heaven have tended to dominate or even bottleneck a lot of the discussion on non-80s, non-current Nintendo series (I mean before RH's recent reveal for Switch, which is why I didn't list it). I do wonder how discussion of these middle-era Nintendo franchises could've gone if, say, we got Isaac in Brawl or Ult and Chorus Kids in Smash 4, but I digress with that lament.

As for the rest, I think it's like, individually they're not very likely, but collectively there could be some chance, since there's so many of them with so many different potential hooks.
However, speaking very generally, I think "more commercial success and a clearer idea of how they would work or have a hook --> more likely." I also think things like being internally developed or having some specific connection to someone like Miyamoto who has some clout w/in the company are advantages.

As for some other specific series:

I do think that as long as we're entertaining the idea of a mounted character like Excitebiker as a kind of surprise or retro rep, a Wave Race rep stands out as another possibility for that which could be even more surprising, had actually pretty similar sales, and also has a connection to Miyamoto, who produced.

As I alluded to, Custom Robo actually may have done pretty decent on the Ballot. It was appearing on polls here and there and actually ranked as high as Sora in the big aggregated polling spreadsheet. Now, clearly it didn't do nearly as well as Sora on the actual Ballot, as Sora seems to be a huge polling outlier, and I don't see CR as any sort of top vote-getter, but there's a good chance it got some notice. It's still unlikely to be repped by a PC because it's basically defunct without a developer or clear future, and didn't sell all too well even when it was still ongoing, but at least there's a little something there you can point to.

I think Brain Age and Big Brain Academy are good examples of series that have a pretty good case actually on paper, in terms of sales and the fact they're still active series even if their big sales breakthroughs are well in the past. It's just, does Sakurai see the hook with either Dr. Kawashima or Dr. Lobe as fighters, and are these series too much in the periphery of Nintendo's collection of ongoing series to motivate trying to find a creative way to make them work?
Style Savvy I would have included in this category until recently. Unfortunately, with Fashion Dreamer being essentially a successor to the series but not published by Nintendo, its chances seem pretty dead now, despite its previous run of pretty good sales with a presumably low budget and high casual appeal.

Lastly, I'd like to bring up Pilotwings, because it's another one that at least on paper has a pretty good case: sold pretty well and was well-regarded critically in its day, had some novel gameplay that made its mark on the industry and pushed the limits of its consoles, was produced by Miyamoto, and was even briefly revived for the 3DS. It just again has sort of similar problems to some of the others: without it being relevant and without the hook for the moveset being as immediately obvious as some others, and on top of that questions on whether Nintendo would be comfortable repping Pilotwings with one of its lesser-known OCs, I'm not sure what the path to a PC would be. I guess if the Miis were ever given a moveset actually based on their games, you could work in some aircrafts or gadgets from Pilotwings Resort as part of their recovery. But again, on paper, it can't not come to mind when we think of inactive series not repped in Smash that have merit on par with some of the series already in Smash.

Echoes of Wisdom is a mainline title
EoW is as much a mainline LoZ game as Treasure Tracker is a mainline SMB game.

I don't completely disagree with you, but…we've had DLC in Smash since 4, and I don't think that's about to change for the next game.
DLC Packs are not microtransactions.

How is paying for one character at a time or paying for the whole Fighters Pass gambling? It's DLC.
Because when you buy a Fighters Pass early, you don't know who you're getting.

If not Smash the what do you think Sakurais project is?
Kid Icarus Uprising remaster.

You know what? If someone uses Mario Kart 8 in the same sentence as Ultimate Deluxe, tag my ass.

Bowser's Inside Story isn't Smash Ultimate.

Unpredictability isn't the only thing they're good at; learning from their mistakes is another skill of theirs and I doubt they ignored how badly Bowser's Inside Story's remake did, even with the expectation that it would not do well due to being a poorly-marketed 3DS game long after the Switch came out.
So is learning from their successes.

And the Booster Course Pass taught them: "Holy ****! Releasing a bunch of DLC for an extremely popular game can be extremely profitable. Even 5 years later."

Speaking of mouse controls, do you all think they could work like the stylus of the Nintendo DS and 3DS?
Yes.

I mean FF7 got a second original rep before any other 3rd party franchise (presumably because of missing content) so anything is possible. Although Atlus likely will chose one for Persona unlike Square.

My opinion is if Persona returns as a series in Smash 6 then it’s either Joker, Aigis or Yu. Makoto Yuki is the main protagonist of P3 but I think there could be issues with age ratings with how the Evoker is used. P6 is unlikely until maybe Fighters Pass 2 since the game isn’t even officially announce.

Stuff like Jack Frost and other shadows/demons/persona could be listed as SMT which would be a DK situation where a connected series is listed as a separate universe.

And now, instead of making more DLC for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, they're making a brand new one for their new console.

Why would that not then also apply to Smash?

A. MK8 is two generations old now. Ultimate is only one.

B. It might. But it also might not.

Quiet, that doesn't fit with his narrative
Yes. Just like my arguments don't fit with their equally made-up narrative.

It's amazing the conclusions people can come to when they ignore any example that shows there's an alternative.

Like it or not, the Booster Course Pass proves it's possible. Whether it's likely? shrug Who knows?

Huh?

It's blatantly mainline. It's canonically in the timeline, and has events that affect other Zelda games. How is it NOT a mainline game? Because it stars Zelda?

Zelda doesn't treat it's games like Mario. Even Four Swords and Triforce Heroes are considered mainline canon games. It's stuff like Link's Crossbow Training and Hyrule Warriors that isn't.

I mean the BCP happened not because they were wondering whether it was possible that MK DLC could still sell - it's Mario Kart - it was because they had all that Tour content they could easily rework for MK8D, and still had a few years until the more highly prioritized sequel came out.

The sequel is obviously more important to them, it seems to be the headlining game for the new system.

You're trying to make the situation fit the pattern that justifies your conclusion of more Ultimate when the MK context is totally different, both in when the DLC showed up, why it showed up then, and what the next actual game is. Ultimate has no other game to repurpose content from like Tour, and the next Mario Kart doesn't help your argument, as it's a new, original game.

People aren't ignoring the alternative, they're saying it makes less sense. If anything, you're ignoring the next Mario Kart not being more MK8D. You didn't bring it up until someone else did, and you've barely touched on it not fitting your scenario; basically just going "who knows?"

Look, I've thought about SSBU having late DLC too, but if it was going to happen I think we would've had it announced by now. You know, since we just had what is most likely the last major Switch 1-focused Direct?

This is not the same thing though. I guess you could make the comparison with Yoshi - but DKC is clearly distinct from Mario to the extent that the only thing they have in common is being platformers despite common origins. Pretty much every MegaTen spinoff, whether labeled SMT in the title or not, still has so much SMT DNA there that it would be unrecognizable if you stripped it out. The entire core conceit of school children summoning demons in one way or another, a looming apocalypse, etc etc - this is all the same from SMT to Persona to the actual book beforehand that inspired it. Hell, even Metaphor is clearly a MegaTen game (albeit one of the more extreme edge cases) for reasons I won't state due to spoilers.

Nitpicks about categorization aside Jack Frost is super essential and I'll personally be crazy disappointed if they double dip into Persona protags before going there. I also don't understand (I'm not accusing the person I'm replying to of this I'm just speaking generally) why it seems that with Persona in particular people are very unwilling to jump ship to SMT and extend their fandom. Criticisms of the story aside I thought SMTV was awesome. I hope Atlus can bridge the gap via some rereleases or something.

Also, Velvet Room should've been the stage for Persona but that's neither here nor there

I know some people are doubtful on us getting anything smash related in next weeks Nintendo direct but a side of me really thinks we are getting something. Even something as minor as getting smash 64 or smash melee in virtual console with the GameCube games or even a small update for smash ultimate itself with a graphical improvement as an example of the old switch 1 games that would look better on the switch 2 etc. Would also be cool if smash ultimate just got better online connection on the switch 2 with the new update.

Anyway just my thoughts I really do believe that even if we get no new smash game announced or teased that smash is gonna appear in the direct in one way or another. Just a feeling.

I think the most important things to note about the Booster Course Pass are that that everything in it is upscaled assets made for Mario Kart Tour. Even the "original" courses were originally Tour tracks. More importantly though, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe was somehow flying off the shelves years after its release. I can't say that isn't happening to Smash because I don't know, but as far as I do know, it's pretty unheard of. If I were to hazard a guess, I'd say it's due to being a system selling game that was previously on a console that nobody bought being ported to a console who's install base kept getting bigger.

Smash is pretty much as evergreen a seller as mk8dx, I believe, but yeah, there's no asset well to upscale there. If anything, the next Mario kart might not have anything like it since there most likely won't be a tour 2 to pull from given Nintendo pulling out of mobile games recently.

(Sorry, Darth, but Mario kart won't have a comparable track list to 8DX + BCP this time around; I like how you have to focus on tracks for it rather than a hypothetical everyone is in a kart just because Mario kart's rosters have just been that historically basic.)

This all makes sense, but I think I would go about it like Thegameandwatch Thegameandwatch suggested because it could be confusing otherwise. Say we get Demifiend on a roster where Joker is also present. It would be confusing to change Joker's series label from Persona to Shin Megami Tensei, and having Demifiend's label be Persona would be...very incorrect.

And I don't think the comparison is entirely inaccurate either. Yoshi's game was all about protecting Mario from Bowser and Kamek, and strongly featured Shy Guys, which aren't Mario staples, but did appear there first, and their appearances in the Yoshi games and other Mario spin-offs does make them perceived as Mario staples. DK swaps less DNA with Mario in terms of characters (though a handful do still appear in spin-offs, and Diddy Kong is a Mario spin-off staple despite originating there), but remove the power ups and the Donkey Kong Country series is just 2D Mario with a slightly different approach to level design. It also has lore that connects the two series together. The series do set themselves apart, but they are also extremely related. Heck, the first Yoshi game was even under the Super Mario Bros. label.

Wario Land and especially WarioWare are pretty devoid of Mario stuff though, and the new elements are pretty well cordoned off to just the Wario series, so they are kinda how you were thinking.

Personally, I've never tried either series, but I do have an interest in Persona. It looks like a vibe, and for the most part, each game seems to ooze with style.
Shin Megami Tensei on the other hand looks dark and depressing, and I don't really have an interest in that. I guess less nebulously I'm more drawn to Persona seems pretty inviting while Shin Megami Tensei is the opposite.

(Sorry, Darth, but Mario kart won't have a comparable track list to 8DX + BCP this time around; I like how you have to focus on tracks for it rather than a hypothetical everyone is in a kart just because Mario kart's rosters have just been that historically basic.)
While we're probably not getting 96 right out the gate, I wouldn't be surprised if we got 48, or at least 40 rather than the usual 32.

Even Four Swords and Triforce Heroes are considered mainline canon games. It's stuff like Link's Crossbow Training and Hyrule Warriors that isn't.
And...what exactly is the defining line between those two sets of games?

What makes Triforce Heroes mainline, but Crossbow Training not?

I would not have called ANY of those "mainline" Zelda games.

I mean the BCP happened not because they were wondering whether it was possible that MK DLC could still sell - it's Mario Kart - it was because they had all that Tour content they could easily rework for MK8D, and still had a few years until the more highly prioritized sequel came out.

Reworking Tour content is the reason they were willing to try such an unproven release model. If it wasn't successful, no big deal. Because it didn't take a ton of resources to develop.

But now that the model has proven extremely successful, it's something Nintendo WOULD be willing to invest resources in. Confident that, if the game is big enough, additional DLC will still be successful, even 5 years later.

You're trying to make the situation fit the pattern that justifies your conclusion
No, I'm doing the exact opposite of that. Other people are drawing conclusions based on patterns that have exceptions to them. And I'm pointing out those exceptions. Which makes their conclusions...inconclusive.

Being like, "That's not going to happen because it never happens.", while ignoring that one time it already happened, is disingenuous.

People aren't ignoring the alternative, they're saying it makes less sense.
Don't gaslight me. There are absolutely people here saying it's definitely not going to happen.

Why? Because a WOMAN is the main character?
Captain Toad is a woman?

If anything, the next Mario kart might not have anything like it since there most likely won't be a tour 2 to pull from given Nintendo pulling out of mobile games recently.
I could definitely see MK9 having way more regular DLC seasons than MK8 though. Just continue to release Course Passes right up until they start development on MK10. Especially if the DLC is mostly returning courses.

While we're probably not getting 96 right out the gate, I wouldn't be surprised if we got 48, or at least 40 rather than the usual 32.
My dream MK game would be a slow build towards "Everycourse is Here!"

Launch with 16 new courses. 8 SNES courses(one for each tileset), and all 16 N64 courses. Then with each season of DLC, they add another game's courses.

Before Mario Kart Tour, I always thought it would be cool if each game had an even number of retro tracks (I don't remember if it worked out to 2 or 4 for each one). Tour makes the number of games odd though so it doesn't really work.

Shy Guy was in Super Mario Bros. 2 USA first, not Yoshi's Island. They also only came in Red and Pink colors. That said, Yoshi does have his own specific enemies that don't appear elsewhere, so there is something. Besides that, Yoshi's Island did give them more unique colors and fleshed them out, so credit where it's due~

Is this about what I said? If so I did say that Shy Guys originated from the Mario series.

"Yoshi's game was all about protecting Mario from Bowser and Kamek, and strongly featured Shy Guys, which aren't Mario staples, but did appear there first,"

I read that as appearing in Yoshi first. My bad.

Yeah that is pretty clumsily worded. I meant to say that the Shy Guys did originate from the Mario series, but aren't featured super prominently in it like they are in the Yoshi series. However, because of their their appearances in the Yoshi series and other Mario spin-offs like Mario Kart and Mario Sports, they are seen as Mario staples. Probably not on the level of things like Goombas, or even Yoshi himself, but it's pretty close.

I get that - I got into Persona first and went backwards for the same reason. And while SMT definitely is dark and depressing on the surface, it's also super silly. And that's far from a weird one-off, haha. That's why I always advocate for Jack Frost - apart from being the Pikachu equivalent of the overarching series, he embodies the whole vibe - kinda evil and mischievous, but also surprisingly cute and quirky and funny.
