While we're probably not getting 96 right out the gate, I wouldn't be surprised if we got 48, or at least 40 rather than the usual 32.
Assuming we get 48 out the gate, I can see 24 nitro courses and 24 retro courses. For the retro courses, here are my picks:
IMG_3548.jpeg

The SNES images for the courses I picked are placeholders; in my mind, they would be modernized.
  • SNES Mario Circuit would combine the 1, 2, and 4 layouts with obstacles from RMX Mario Circuit 1. In other words, this would be designed more like the Tour city courses.
  • SNES Choco Island would also be designed this way, along with a visual overhaul to look more like chocolate, and RMX Choco Island obstacles
    • Lap 2 would have a hot cocoa lake with marshmallows to bounce off of. There would also be a glide ramp next to a normal ramp so you can skip the marshmallows in favor of hitting another ramp on the platform in the lake.
    • Lap 3 would restore the scrapped Choco Island 3 layout
  • SNES Vanilla Lake would be a double decker course, with the 2 layout on top, and the 1 layout on the bottom. There would also be geysers on the bottom to raise you up to the upper level.

What are some bosses ideas for Smash 6?
I said it before: If Sora gets into the base game, a KH boss would be epic, like give us Axel, Ansem, Xemnas or LW!

My boss selection would be:
  1. OC villain
  2. Master Hand
  3. Crazy Hand
  4. Fury Bowser
  5. Ganon (as he appears in Link to the Past)
  6. Magolor Soul
  7. (Mega) Rayquaza
  8. Porky
  9. DJ Octavio
  10. Dragaux
  11. Duon
  12. Grunty
  13. Magician Type-0

Unlikely as she is, a GLaDOS boss fight would be fun. Missiles, bombs, turret minions, the various gels, maybe even tap into her innate control over the facility (I'm imagining her launching someone off stage, and rather than edgeguarding them, she just tauntingly moves the stage away from you). Give her some character-specific dialogue and we're golden.

If we're talking franchises already in the game ... I could see Pikmin getting a boss fight. Metroid as well, Queen Metroid and Mother Brain being the standout picks. Also if Eggman isn't playable, maybe he could get a boss fight where he teams up with Wily?

One idea I had for Vanilla Lake was having the track melt as the race went on to switch between the two layouts.

And...what exactly is the defining line between those two sets of games?

What makes Triforce Heroes mainline, but Crossbow Training not?

I would not have called ANY of those "mainline" Zelda games
If it’s in the official timeline and it’s mentioned as a mainline title by Nintendo

I can think of a few:

Kraid or Mother Brain (Metroid)
Nightmare or Zero/Zero-Two (Kirby)
Rayquaza (Pokémon)
Andross (Star Fox)
Porky Minch or Giygas (Mother/EarthBound)
Hades (Kid Icarus)
Some potentially spoilery (not that it matters) Xenoblade boss
Metal Gear REX
Death Egg Robot, Perfect Chaos, Biolizard or Metal Overlord (Sonic)
Tyrant (Resident Evil)

Baramos (Dragon Quest 3)
Ultra Necrozoma (Pokemon UltraSun/Ultra Moon)
Hell House (Final Fantasy VII)
Shadow Kaneshiro & the Big Piggy Bank thingy (Persona 5) (I think this boss fight is goofy enough to fit in Smash)
M. Bison (Street Fighter)
Silver (Sonic) (Yes, Silver, i think his boss fight is iconic and would be fun to see)
Xemnas (Kingdom Hearts 2)
Ender Dragon (Minecraft)
Gesee Howard (Fatal Fury)
Fawful (Mario & Luigi)

Those are some of my boss fight ideas.

I would go for Moebius D & J rather than Z. Players are more likely to have seen Moebius D & J (even if they don't know their identity since that part's a spoiler), and Z's boss fight is...pretty ill suited for a Smash boss due to most of his fight being scripted.
Alternatively, what about Moebius N or Alpha?

well I'd quite like to see Calamity Ganon and Fury Bowser. in the vase of KH I'd like Xemnas in his World of Nothing form. a reoccurring Eggman mech would be great like the Death Egg Robo. I wouldn't mind a splatoon boss and a pikmin one. DJ Octavio in one his mechs and the Titan Dweevil would be my picks. a Queen Metroid wouldn't go a miss

N would be hard to justify as a Boss if Noah gets in. If anything, N could end up being Noah’s echo fighter. But apart from physique, the moveset is completely different.

Alpha would be a cool boss. But I do think Z would take priority considering Alpha is only the final boss of the DLC. If anything, if Alvis gets in as a :ultshulk: echo, Alpha would be well suited as a Final Smash.

The quintessential speculation thread conversations.

A: "I'd like to see x, y and x."
B: "That's not going to happen. How can you even see that as likely?"
A: "I don't... it's a wishlist."

A: "Here's my prediction."
B: "Why do you want that."
A: "I don't. It's a prediction, not my wants."

Just a few off the top of my head.

The lame but truthful answer is simply “Nintendo”. Simple as that.

You might not call some of these mainline but you’re not the one who decides what is and isn’t mainline; the devs are.

Captain Toad is a woman?
…I was talking about Zelda.

The big day is almost here.
Three days to go before Switch 2's info dump.

Just beware that April Fools day is the last day before the direct.

So, tread carefully from the jokes once it arrives.

Also, my guess for Smash Bros's next title may be Legacy. After all spirits moved on and maybe a change of hands, this game shows the legacy it tries to make beyond Sakurai's years of work.

it’s simple: Nintendo says so
Whhaaat? You mean to tell me that's not just a company trying to inflate the importance of their spinoff projects in order to convince more people to buy them?

If it’s in the official timeline and it’s mentioned as a mainline title by Nintendo
Being canon is not the same thing as being mainline.

Death By Degrees is canon to the Tekken timeline. That doesn't make it a mainline Tekken game.
Tales from the Borderlands is canon to the Borderlands timeline. That doesn't make it a mainline Borderlands game.
World of Warcraft is canon to the Warcraft timeline. That doesn't make it a mainline Warcraft game.

I don't understand why you'd want to make characters that can easily be Fighters(like Bison, Silver and Geese) and make them into Bosses.

And the DQ Boss should be Estark!

Imagine if Totaka's Song somehow made it into Smash…
It's weird that it hasn't already.

My personal selection
So many dragons!

Triforce Heroes still has you going through dungeons using items and beating the boss at the end. It adds a multiplayer aspect, but it's still Zelda' core gameplay.

Crossbow Training is basically a shooter, you go around hitting targets and enemies. Much of the usual conventions like going through dungeons are missing.

There's definitely a difference between what Triforce Heroes and Crossbow Training is doing. The former is playing around with the usual conventions, but they're still there, Crossbow Training generally throws them out to do their own thing.

Dragons are the swords of videogame enemies, they are cool

I think that Grima would make a better stage (have it be on the dragon's back like the final level of Awakening) than a boss.
Entirely valid, I had the idea that the boss itself would be a recreation of the final boss of Awakening by having it take place on the back of Grima, while fighting the Fell Robin.

for enjoy the hype of Grand Theft Auto 6, are you really think that a GTA character could join in Smash?, violent franchises as Metal Gear and Persona 5 are a meaning that M-Rated games are avaliable for Smash and Banjo and Steve are also means that non-japanese characters can join in Smash too

for me there are two options for GTA characters joins in Smash, the first is CJ, because GTA San Andreas is a most popular game from the series and CJ is very iconic and Michael,Trevor and Franklin because GTA 5 is the 2nd best-selled game of all time

I laughed and I agree with you - but to play devil's advocate, or just to poke at the question: what criteria still exist at this point?

Doing some sort of Historical Impact * Nintendo-Relevance * (other smaller factors / 2) sort of equation used to be commonly accepted as some sort of vague guideline that was at least useful enough for speculation. I don't want to use specific examples because I'm moreso trying to get at the larger point, but if Genshin Impact, LoL, FNAF, etc etc etc are all valid - why does the line necessarily stop at GTA? The only concrete rule that people seem to mostly agree on in any sense is that it should be contained to video games.
