haven't posted much on here lately but I wanted to talk about stuff I've been watching lately
Last week I finished watching Batman: the Brave and the Bold. I always had fond memories of this show from back then but in reality I actually didn't remember much - my main memories of it were pretty much just Blue Beetle and Bat-Mite. But I've been getting more interested in DC's catalog lately, and the premise of the show interested me, so I decided to revisit it. It's a ton of fun! It's such a fascinating trek through all the weird niche corners of the DC universe and there are so many fun characters showcased. I also really love the visual style it has going on: the character designs all have this really stagey dynamic feel to them with thick black lines and whatnot, and it might be one of my favorite visual styles any of these DC cartoons have gone for, everything just pops in a way even other well-regarded entries don't. It makes sense that one of the last episodes guest stars Space Ghost, because that's very much the kind of thing this show feels like it's stylistically calling back to at times, that old WB-adjacent cartoon vibe.
If I have any complaints about the show, it's that I feel like the scope kind of starts narrowing as it goes on? Like, my favorite thing about it is seeing all these cool weird characters show up and get the spotlight, but I feel like later on in the show that kind of starts to slow down - don't get me wrong, there's always a very established cast of recurring characters the show likes to go back to, but especially after they introduce a new Justice League, by the end of Season 3 almost all the episodes are focused on the JL mainliners and already super-recurring characters, with any cool new chars mostly being relegated to the opening shorts. They take some steps to rectify this at the very end, and this has no effect on the actual quality of the episodes, but it's a bit of a shame regardless.
Regardless, it's such a comfy show, with so many cool homages thrown in there - one of my favorite examples is the anthology episode where they animate a chapter from the old Batman manga by the 8 Man author. That **** rocks. I also think it's neat that despite the Silver Age focus, there's a surprising amount of at-the-time brand new legacy heroes showing up. This show is a masterclass in digging up the most fringe characters and showing off how cool they are - it's basically the perfect show to find your new favorite DC character. Loved it. They should put Ambush Bug in Injustice
