WoL has been my favorite Story Mode so far.

I wouldn't mind seeing it return, but with mare variety to the Spirit Events.
Yeah I'm in the same boat. Sure SSE has cool cutscenes and interactions, but the platforming really doesn't do it for me (and I'm a huge fan of platformers, more than fighting game actually) and fighting just random mobs and robots get really boring fast compared to fighting the actual roster in World of light. My only gripes with World of light is that it kind of overstayed it's welcome, like at some point you're pretty much maxed out everywhere and you're just using the same 3 spirits depending of the matchup. Speaking of, I think the Rock-Paper-Scissors triangle was kind of dumb, I get that the team probably wanted a way for players to try different spirits instead of just using the one with the biggest numbers, but I don't know it just doesn't do a lot for me.

Speaking of other single content, I kind of wish they expand on the Crazy orders from Smash 4. For those who haven't played it, basically each turn you get too choose between 3 random matches with different rules and rewards. The goal was to do as many match as you can before the time limits or until you felt your character has taken enough damage to then beat Crazy hand. I feel like a mode like that could be expand with Rogue lites elements. Instead of wining rewards like trophies or music, each match will give you upgrades, items or healing and the goal would be to fight Crazy hand at the end.

Mine was SSE. Nothing has even come close to it so far for me. For one, it was local co-op so I could play through the game with my friend or brother. Secondly, I think the platforming stages were a great idea because it tapped into the whole platforming side of Smash’s genre and it felt like you were actually exploring g a world. Finally, it’s been the only mode Smash has ever had with any kind of character interaction. Sure, it had flaws and wasn’t perfect but it did a ton of things I really like. WoL just felt like disconnected event matches but with a map. I didn’t hate it but I have no desire to ever play it again after the first time where I could play SSE several times.

Smash run has a ton of potential to be expanded on. Just make the same map as the other 3ds one but much bigger with multiple new sections, plus put it online and make players be able to interact with each other. Plus you can make it so like 60 or more online players can play at the same time like some sort of battle royale mode or something. And the last 4 fighters to survive get in a fight with all of the upgrades they picked up. I could see this mode being a big selling point for the game as well if they promote it as something a ton of players can play at the same time online.
Okay maybe not 60 fighters all at once, but there definitely should be on-screen interaction between players.

I just think regardless of how they handle single player mode next time around, it'd benefit greatly from some extra text. Event matches? Add some script before and after for the characters involved. WoL style? Add unlockable conversations between the current cast a la fire emblem. I could keep going but just do more stuff in either of those veins and I'll be able to swallow the lack of sse mode or even a 4-style party mode focus a little easier.

Speaking of character interaction, how would you feel if Smash had custom matchup dependent intro and victory quotes between characters like in other fighting games? I think that alone would go a long way in making the characters feel more connected. They already have a couple matchup dependent victory quotes but they could do a lot more with it.

They wouldn't do it for every possible permutation of course but I'll settle for how, say, MvC3 does it where each they have generic but fitting win quotes...alongside a few special ones for matchups that are "well duh, why wouldn't Mario and sonic have special text for dueling each other"

We got the latter already, but sparingly and only for characters within their own franchise.

It would be hard to hear these intro interactions over the 3… 2… 1… GO!

For such a goofy game that Smash WiiU was looking back, i really had fun with Crazy Orders back in the day. It really has potential to become a cool rougelike side mode.

What would the next single player content be?
Other then the usual Classic mode, could another campaign be possible? Not as big compared to World of Light, but something.
Melee's Adventure Mode for replayability and those who like stages

Smash Wii U's Classic Mode returning as Colosseum Mode

World of Light 2 with like what others have said, Trim out the bloat and add more variety to the battles.

For example they don't have to be all stock. Coin and Time matches as well, Assist Trophy Battles, Home-Run Contest etc

Boss Battle Rush

Smash Run with actual multiplayer.

Spirit Battles to return in the form of Card Battles. Trophies only for Characters, Assist Trophies, Items and Pokemon. Everyone else gets playing cards instead.

WoL has been my favorite Story Mode so far.

I wouldn't mind seeing it return, but with mare variety to the Spirit Events.

The other two people in the online FFA waiting fifteen seconds (if not more because of lag) for an interaction to finish before the game even starts:

Or what if you don’t even have the countdown at all and the interactions replace that? Or it just says Go! afterwards? Maybe it can only be for local matches or matches between friends?

I’m not sure what most characters can say tbh. About half of them are mute, don’t talk in complete sentences or communicate in a language we could understand, and/or are animals. :morty:

That’s fair. Although the more third party characters they add, the more opportunities there are for some dialogue. I think the simplest solution is to limit those interactions to 1 vs 1 matches and not do it for every possible matchup, just where it makes sense or the characters can play off each other in some way.

I could be wrong but I feel like there are a decent amount more characters that speak than don’t. Off the top of my head, the non speaking characters are the Mario cast, Link, Pokemon other than Mewtwo and Lucario, Kirby, Dedede, Olimar, Inklings, ROB, Duck Hunt, Ice Climbers, Villager, the DK cast, Ridley, and a few silent RPG protagonists. I’m probably missing a few. I think Isabelle talks but isn’t voiced right?

I’m not opposed to the idea of interactions between more than one character. Say if a 4-Person FFA had all the Star Fox characters plus one random, an interaction among the three would be cool.

Maybe if Wolf said something like “I’ll get you for this Star Fox” after getting KO’d or something? Just an example.

Re: Ghost fighters.

I have the perfect choice for a ghost character:

Would Excitebiker count as a surprise character?

Personally, I think Excitebike Rider would fill the role of a surprise fighter given that a bike themed fighter doesn’t exist yet, and Excitebike was a prominent NES era game. Like the other surprise fighters, they all have some historical significance behind them, and interestingly enough, all of the surprise fighters debuted in the 1980s.

What would the next single player content be?

Personally, my most wanted thing would be an All-Star mode similar to the older games.

In terms of platforming, I think these three routes could work:
  • A Smash Run mode with Boss Fights at the end
  • WoL that trades some of the fights for a couple platforming levels
  • Melee styled Adventure Mode that is expanded to incorporate more franchises.
I think the idea of Subspace 2 would be cool if it wasn’t a huge time sink (it was effectively a platformer within Brawl)

What if they gave each character a bit of a story in their classic modes? So as they fight against certain characters, you can have still comic stop style images of their interactions with their opponents and a short comic style ending? That could be really cool and seems manageable.
maybe but I’d hope they’d get help with the endings

I really like this idea! It would expand on Ultimate giving each character their own distinct route, and would probably prompt a lot of creative encounters from the team. Since it would be expensive to produce an ending for so many characters, it's possible the comics would be used in marketing for the game as well.

Ultimate All-Star is basically the Smash 4 Wii U Classic Mode of All-Star modes... in that it's way too different from the original. But this time it's worse because All-Star Mode in Ultimate—y'know, the game with 'Everyone is Here'—should have had the most challenging All-Star mode, in my opinion. But nope, it's just a multi-man smash.

As for Classic Mode, I like Ultimate's Classic Mode; I think it does feel like an arcade mode with set fights that fit the theme of each classic mode route. But, god lord... the boss variety is bad. Why do so many fighters have the Crazy and Master Hand boss fights at the end when we have six other bosses to choose from? Some characters don't even have a boss, which feels disappointing.

I also think it would be cool to have Tabuu as a secret boss in the next game's adventure mode, and beating him unlocks Boss Rush.

Gosh, I think I'm becoming that meme of 'old man yells at clouds' with these hot takes lately, haha.

I really want to see Smash Run turned into a Battle Royale.

But the question was about single player modes, and that wouldn't be that.

Ever heard of subtitles in other languages? :p

Anyway, I thought about something with that last post long post about Ultimate not being a good follow up to the ballot for Smash Bros., and something Gengar84 Gengar84 told me about it. A reason Gengar said that made Everyone is Here happening? The one about cut veterans being wanted on the Ballot? With that, here is an adjustment on what I have said: Given how cut veterans were wanted back on the ballot, and how that lead to “Everyone is Here”, that simply did not make Ultimate the best way to follow up on the ballot In TERMS of newcomers, simply put.

What do you all think? I think with other wanted newcomers wanted in the ballot and why I said the were not in Ultimate as playable, or at least prioritized, this should lead to said newcomers getting in as playables next game.

I don’t know. I had fun with all of them. I even used Ganondorf whenever I had the option and I’d imagine he’s one of the least fun. For me, it’s more about the adventure and excitement of being able to go through the world as your favorite characters. It was never going to compete with pure platformers mechanically and I’m cool with that. I guess fun is subjective.

Pikachu talks to Ash and Friede all the time and they understand it perfectly. They could definitely make something work there. I think it’s way less than half the characters that don’t talk. Even some of the Pokemon like Mewtwo and Lucario do.

Would Goku count as a surprise character?

N-no, wait, hold on; not that Goku.

This Goku.
No joke, I'd genuinely love this mischievous little goober in Smash Bros. Bonus points if they got Masako Nozawa in on this, and just go all in on the Dragon Ball references before he gets properly revealed in his reveal trailer (if he's not a hidden character, which he probably WOULD be).

Mike Jones would probably never get into Smash, due to StarTropics not being released in Japan, but I think it'd be pretty cool if Nintendo did a remake of StarTropics and released it in the West and Japan.

Then he'd probably have a chance.

Basically, I'm still hoping that he, Mr. Stevenson, Tin Star, and the Uniracers could all at least get Spirits/Trophies. By the way, is it odd that whenever I see Mike Jones, I feel as though he should be voiced by Will Friedle (Ron Stoppable, Terry McGinnis/Future Batman, etc.)?

Should the character's classic mode ending stay with just the victory image at the end of their route? Or have an small video before their victory image?
Personally I miss the videos. And the jingle. It should be the Mii Fighters' victory theme.

I think the ballot should be forgotten at this point. It's a 10 year old poll, opinions on characters have changed a lot through the years. Many most requested characters right now either didn't existed at all (like Gen 8 or 9 Pokémon, Xenoblade 3 characters, many indie characters like Hollow knight, Hades etc.) or were not really relevent (like Crash Bandicoot for example). Besides, it's not very true that Ultimate didn't used the ballot for the newcomers and only used it for the veterans. While it was never stayed officially, I'm pretty confident that Ridley, K. Rool, Simon Belmont, Hero, Banjo and Sora (this one is confirmed) were chosen on the ballot (of course there was probably other factors, but I'm sure those characters were all very high).

So, Xenoblade, Splatoon and ARMS don't have items.

Let's give them some!
For Splatoon there's so many options, but I'll go with the Rainmaker, which could work exactly like in the game: when it spawns it's protected by a shield that you must break by attacking it. Once destroyed, it's a powerful ranged weapons that you can use. For Arms, there's not a lot of option, so I think the Shock bomb is what would make sense. It would explose after some time and players could throw it before the explosion. I don't really have any idea for Xenoblade.

It would also be cool to see more items from third party universe, especially the dlc franchise if they came back. I think Minecraft has a lot of potential for items like Ender pearl or Spawn egg.

I did not say the Ballot was used for veterans only instead of newcomers. I was just saying there was a focus more on veterans in Ultimate than newcomers, hence, why I was thinking the Ultimate was not really a good follow up to the Ballot in terms of newcomers, as I said in an earlier post. Besides, I was talking mostly about the ballot back then, not now, even in terms of the newcomers who have yet to appear in Smash as playables but were wanted in the Ballot back then.

There is even a few because of bad timing such as Sans who would have presumably placed decently high if it wasn't for Undertale releasing less then a month before the poll finished

Lot of the assist trophies likely were placed highly but weren't chosen for priority reasons such as Waluigi, Skull Kid, Issac, Shadow and etc.
